Chapter 213: Chapter 213: Huge Pressure
Inside the lab, a single, enormous metal box stood in the center, but there was no one around.
The empty laboratory made Joel Quincy wonder if it had been ransacked.
Just then, Nathan Trenton and Chloe Sinclair, who were about to leave, heard Joel Quincy’s voice and came out.
Joel Quincy sounded a little confused. "Where is everyone?"
Chloe Sinclair said, "Their work for the day was done, so I let them go home to rest."
"The work is done?"
At her words, Joel Quincy’s gaze finally fell upon the metal box in the center of the room, a rare flash of surprise crossing his face.
The Mark Device was compact, and while the apparatus before him was clearly a base model, even so, it was more than double the size.
Joel Quincy’s eyebrow twitched. "You disassembled the whole thing?"
Chloe Sinclair looked a little guilty. She hid behind Nathan Trenton, peeking out from behind him and nodding meekly. "Mhm, the whole thing."
Her "modification," as it turned out, had only preserved a few of the rare metal materials. She had replaced all the other components and programming.
For a moment, Joel Quincy was speechless, finding he had nothing to say to Chloe Sinclair.
Joel Quincy finally took a deep breath, unsure whether to be angry or impressed. "You’ve certainly got a lot of nerve. Do you have any idea what you’d be facing if you fail to assemble this nuclear fusion reactor correctly?"
Chloe Sinclair nodded. But when it came to the technology’s success, she said without a moment’s hesitation, "It will definitely work."
After all, this was something she herself had developed in the future. Chloe Sinclair was extremely confident.
Joel Quincy stared straight at her, his gaze intensifying.
Finally, he waved his hand. "Go on, do what you need to do. If any problems come up, Nathan and I will help you."
The implication was clear: no matter what she did, he and Nathan Trenton would support her unconditionally.
A warmth spread through Chloe Sinclair’s heart. She nodded emphatically, a lump forming in her throat. "Professor, I won’t let you down."
’I have to make this nuclear fusion reactor work!’
With her mind preoccupied, Chloe Sinclair didn’t stay in her apartment for long after Nathan Trenton dropped her off. She soon headed for her own research lab.
’Host, didn’t you just say that your health is your most important asset? How come that rule goes right out the window when it comes to you?’
There was a hint of mockery in Eight’s voice. Within the system, its plump body looked rather unwieldy, its blue eyes flickering.
Chloe Sinclair paused as she opened the laboratory door and gave a wry smile. "They can rest. I can’t."
The Professor had gone up against immense pressure from his superiors to secure this opportunity for her to modify the Mark Device.
Her task wasn’t as simple as just completing the nuclear fusion reactor.
She had to use this device to move the entire experiment forward, and what’s more, she had to produce tangible results.
Eight didn’t understand these complexities, its flickering blue eyes filled with incomprehension.
But as her system AI, this was the first time it had ever urged its host to get more rest.
Because that night, Chloe Sinclair holed up in the lab, her expression intent as she stared at the massive amounts of data before her.
The next day, after quickly freshening up, Chloe Sinclair headed to the lab, then went to her classes in the afternoon.
For seven days straight, Chloe Sinclair barely slept a wink. If it weren’t for the system’s enhancements, her body would have given out long ago.
Fortunately, Chloe Sinclair’s efforts were paying off.
Ever since she had showcased her incredible skills at Joel Quincy’s institute, no one there questioned her authority.
As a result, the research atmosphere in the lab had become very positive.
Chloe Sinclair yawned, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction as she looked at the device, which was now more than halfway complete.
"Chloe, have you been getting any rest lately?"
