Chapter 150: Chapter 150: Speed
Before Chloe could even speak, her ears were filled with piercing screams and the sound of people fleeing.
She instinctively looked up and saw a large blue truck barrelling wildly toward them.
It struck several pedestrians along the way, splattering fresh blood across the dark asphalt.
Not only that, but the pungent stench of blood also hung in the air.
Cries for help and screams echoed all around, seemingly without end.
The truck was now less than ten meters from Chloe and the child in front of her!
The child seemed to be frozen in fear, staring blankly in the direction of the oncoming truck, his face ashen.
[BEEP BEEP—]
[The God of Study System has detected an object ten meters away that poses a threat to the Host’s life. Invincibility Mode has been activated. Host, please evacuate immediately! Host, please evacuate immediately!]
Eight’s voice was frantic, and a beeping alarm blared from the system.
In that instant, the massive truck, which was about to hit them, seemed to slow down in Chloe’s eyes, as if she were watching it in slow motion.
She scooped up the child in one smooth motion, intending to move to the safety of the roadside.
But the child in her arms began to struggle, and then broke free, running toward his mother.
Alarm shot through Chloe. Seeing the truck drawing ever closer, she gritted her teeth, sprinted a few steps forward, and snatched the child back into her arms.
Just as the truck was about to slam into the child’s mother, Chloe reacted in a flash, tackling the woman who was still frozen to the spot.
A fierce gust of wind tore at her back. Clutching the child and the woman, Chloe rolled several times across the pavement before skidding to a halt.
The truck had only grazed them as it sped past, still completely out of control.
Chloe’s eyes narrowed, her expression growing grim.
Suddenly, the still-stunned crowd watched as a young woman in a black t-shirt burst from their midst.
After sprinting for a dozen or so meters, she actually caught up to the out-of-control truck!
The onlookers were still reeling from the shock, but upon seeing this, they forgot everything else!
For a moment, their minds went completely blank.
But an even greater shock was yet to come.
Just as they were marveling that someone could run so fast, Chloe hauled herself onto the truck and was inside the cab in less than three seconds.
The series of movements was so fluid, it was as if she had practiced it thousands of times.
The uninjured people in the crowd finally snapped out of it. Someone shouted, "What are you all staring at? Help if you can! If you have your phone, call 911! The rest of you, follow that truck! The main intersection is just ahead! Traffic is heavy there—if that truck doesn’t stop, the consequences will be unimaginable!"
Jolted by the warning, everyone sprang into action.
And so, a strange scene unfolded on the wide road: a speeding, out-of-control truck in the lead, with a procession of dozens, even hundreds, of cars following close behind.
Chloe, however, was unaware of any of this.
Looking at the driver, who was unconscious from a sudden medical emergency, she suddenly recalled a major news story from her past life.
A blue truck’s brakes had failed on a downhill curve. After hitting several people, it entered a main thoroughfare, causing a massive pile-up with numerous casualties.
The time, the location, the model of the truck—it all matched.
No matter what, she had to stop this accident from happening.
Chloe’s brow was deeply furrowed.
She had already unbuckled the driver’s seatbelt and hauled him over to the passenger seat.
But the truck showed no signs of slowing.
Seeing the speedometer needle hovering at 150 km/h, Chloe’s expression turned grim.
Seeing how utterly reckless Chloe Sinclair was being, Eight shrieked, "Chloe Sinclair! Host! For crying out loud! Do you have a death wish?"
