Chapter 72: Chapter 72

Konoha’s reply to Kiriya’s request came quickly.

Approved.

Wasn’t it just the Flying Thunder God Technique?

Then give it to him.

When Jiraiya heard the news, even he was a little surprised.

After all, this was the Flying Thunder God Technique, an incredibly rare space-time ninjutsu with value that was almost impossible to measure.

He had expected the old men in Konoha to hesitate, drag things out, and come up with all kinds of excuses before making a decision.

He had not expected them to agree so cleanly.

But after thinking about it from the Sandaime’s perspective, it was not hard to understand.

The Flying Thunder God Technique was rare, and its effects were terrifyingly powerful, but if no one could use it, then it was nothing more than a scroll gathering dust in storage.

Only when someone learned it and mastered it properly could its true value be brought out.

The village already had Minato Namikaze, yes, but... if there was a chance to gain a second "Yellow Flash," who would refuse?

Just imagining two Yellow Flashes active on the battlefield, Konoha’s army sweeping forward while enemies broke before them and fled at the mere mention of their names... the Sandaime would probably laugh himself to death from joy.

As for whether Kiriya would fight for the village?

Hadn’t he risked his life to save Might Duy?

A young man who valued bonds and loyalty that much—wasn’t that the best proof that he had inherited the Will of Fire?

So even though Danzo kept stirring up trouble from the side, the Sandaime still agreed decisively.

Even if Kiriya failed, it did not matter.

The village would not lose anything either way.

But if he succeeded, then Konoha’s strength would rise again, and making the village great once more would be right around the corner.

"They’re dreaming big," Jiraiya muttered, glancing at Kiriya, whose expression looked as if he had swallowed something bitter.

"But first, the kid has to actually learn it."

Kiriya had already had the scroll for the Flying Thunder God Technique for two hours.

Arriving with it was also a set of training notes from Minato Namikaze.

As Jiraiya’s disciple, the Yellow Flash was technically Kiriya’s senior brother.

After hearing that his junior needed help, he had immediately sent over some of his own understanding and training methods for the Flying Thunder God Technique.

Honestly, he was being extremely considerate.

As the modern user of the Flying Thunder God Technique, and possibly the shinobi with the highest mastery of it since its creation, Minato Namikaze’s understanding of the technique was unmatched.

On top of that, his usual careful and rigorous style meant that he explained the principles, usage methods, and training process in great detail.

Combined with the Nidaime Hokage’s original notes already recorded in the scroll, cultivation should, in theory, have gone quite smoothly.

And yet...

Kiriya still got stuck.

For two whole hours, he read until his eyes went dry and his head felt swollen, but his progress remained painfully slow.

This really could not be blamed on him.

Compared with ordinary ninjutsu, the difficulty of learning the Flying Thunder God Technique was on a completely different level.

To put it simply, if the Three Basic Techniques were elementary-school math, and ninjutsu such as Flame Bullet or Swamp of the Underworld were middle-school math, then the Flying Thunder God Technique jumped straight to advanced mathematics.

Even with Kiriya’s comprehension, learning it was not something that could be done overnight.

At this pace, managing to get a foot in the door within a week would already count as being blessed by heaven.

For someone who was used to flying, suddenly being forced to walk the road one step at a time felt unbelievably awkward.

Seeing Kiriya’s bitter expression, Jiraiya’s smile became a little strange.

’This isn’t bad either. It’ll force him to calm down and polish his mindset properly. His progress has been too fast lately, and his mentality has started getting a little restless.’

With that thought, Jiraiya quietly left the tent, leaving Kiriya behind to think hard, scratch his head, and torture himself over the scroll.

To make things easier for his disciple, Jiraiya considerately did not assign him any other missions. He simply let Kiriya stay in the camp and treat the wounded.

No one could say anything against that.

Medical-nin were supposed to stay in the rear and keep their teammates alive.

What else were people expecting? For healers to charge into the front line?

Naturally, Kiriya was more than happy to accept this arrangement, and in his heart, he added another point to his cheap teacher’s score.

’Don’t worry, Pervy Sage. One day, I’ll give you a super gift package.’

There were plenty of masterpieces of porn in other worlds, the kind of playboy material that would absolutely open this Pervy Sage’s eyes.

Maybe it would even stimulate a burst of inspiration and help Make-Out Paradise climb to a new artistic height.

Of course, that was for the future.

...

For the next several days, Kiriya’s schedule was extremely full.

Treat the wounded.

Study the Flying Thunder God Technique.

But the more time passed, the more he felt that there simply were not enough hours in a day.

He wished he could spend all twenty-four hours learning the Flying Thunder God Technique.

To speed up his progress, Kiriya copied Naruto’s method from the original story and summoned dozens of shadow clones in one go.

One clone stayed in the wounded barracks to provide support for injured shinobi.

The rest were all thrown into studying the Flying Thunder God Technique.

Fortunately, he had Hashirama cells supporting him.

Otherwise, playing around like this would have sent him straight to the crematorium in less than three days.

Under that intense routine of work and study, half a month passed in a blink.

One morning, Jiraiya entered Kiriya’s tent and saw him sitting there muttering to himself like a crazy person, laughing one moment and looking close to tears the next.

Jiraiya’s brow twisted hard.

’This kid didn’t use shadow clones to study all night again, did he?’

During this period, Kiriya’s reckless momentum had worried even Jiraiya.

Mainly because Kiriya’s current face looked honestly terrifying!

Jiraiya was afraid this brat would push himself too hard, cultivate like a maniac overnight, and drop dead on the spot. He could not help speaking up.

"The ninjutsu is right there. It won’t grow legs and run away. You should rest properly and recover first. I also have a mission for you later, but looking at you now, there’s no way you can take it."

"I’m perfectly fine right now," Kiriya said with absolute certainty.

"You should look in a mirror before saying that," Jiraiya snapped.

Kiriya turned his head and looked into the mirror.

Then he almost scared himself.

His skin was sallow, his face had grown thin, his cheeks were sunken, and his eyes were filled with blood vessels.

He looked like someone from some comedy nightmare.

Where had his original handsome, graceful appearance gone?

"Holy crap. Who the hell is that?"

Kiriya shouted, then saw Jiraiya’s completely expressionless face and immediately laughed awkwardly.

"All right, all right. I get it. I’ll rest now. Anyway, I’ve pretty much gotten the hang of it."

Without waiting for Jiraiya’s reply, he stretched, let out a huge yawn, lay back on the ground, and instantly fell asleep.

"..."

Jiraiya watched him for a moment without saying anything.

Then he pulled a blanket over Kiriya and quietly left.

...

After sleeping beautifully for a while, Kiriya finally got up.

He ate a full meal in the military camp, then went to see Jiraiya.

"Rested enough?"

Jiraiya was busy reviewing documents. He only glanced up briefly before lowering his head and continuing his work.

"Mm.. One hundred in percent condition."

Kiriya raised a thumb and flashed a bright smile with shining back teeth.

Jiraiya’s pen paused.

His expression turned strange, as though some unpleasant memories had just surfaced.

"You’re a good-looking young man. You really shouldn’t make that pose."

"Why?" Kiriya asked, confused.

"It makes people turn stupid," Jiraiya said bluntly.

Kiriya froze.

Then he suddenly remembered a certain green-bodysuit father-son pair with bowl cuts, and every hair on his body stood on end.

’What... What’s going on? Did those two infect me?’

The thought of one day turning into a hot-blooded idiot who shouted "youth" every time he opened his mouth made Kiriya shudder.

He secretly resolved to stay vigilant from now on. He absolutely could not let his behavior slide down that terrifying path.

He was both an idol-type and a strength-type, after all. He could not destroy his own image.

Shaking those strange thoughts out of his head, Kiriya looked at Jiraiya and asked, "You said earlier that you had a mission for me. What mission?"

Jiraiya’s pen stopped.

With his other hand, he took a scroll from inside his clothes and tossed it to Kiriya.

"Your transfer order came down."

"Where to?" Kiriya asked instinctively.

"The border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Wind, the Sunagakure front. It was Orochimaru’s request. He said Sunagakure is using poison too aggressively, and medical-nin are in extremely short supply. Your healing ability is powerful, so he applied to have you transferred over."

"Huh?"

After hearing that, Kiriya blinked in confusion.

"If I remember right, Orochimaru is pretty good with poison too, isn’t he?"

"Being good at using poison doesn’t mean he’s good at neutralizing it. Besides, Orochimaru has to command the front line. He’s busy. Where would he find the time?"

Jiraiya explained.

Part of that was true, such as the fact that Orochimaru was busy.

But the part about not being good at antidotes was pure nonsense.

If Orochimaru, a man who loved playing with poison, could not handle detoxification, he would have died who knew how many times by now.

The real reason was that Orochimaru did not want to waste too much time on that kind of work.

After all, he was basically a snake.

Expecting him to diligently heal the sick and save the wounded was asking a bit much of a snake.

Still, Kiriya understood why Jiraiya framed it that way.

Orochimaru was his close friend, after all, Jiraiya had to cover for him a little.
