Chapter 337: Chapter 337: Was It You?
Wu Sheng saw the look in Su Li’s eyes and had a bad feeling.
He wracked his brain but shook his head. "I don’t know him. I don’t know anyone named Yang Jiu."
Mr. Zhang, watching from the side, was confused. "What do you mean? I don’t quite understand."
Su Li furrowed her brow, fighting back the churning in her stomach. "I was just asking. It just seemed a little strange."
Mr. Zhang frowned. "Tell me about this Yang Jiu person. Who is he? Where does he live?"
Su Li told him everything she knew.
Mr. Zhang immediately stepped out to send someone to check on this person, then came back and continued.
"Was he the one who took you to the underpass and left you there? The group of vagrants said..."
Before Mr. Zhang could finish, the hairs on Su Li’s arms stood straight up.
The female doctor at the side saw that something was wrong. Just as she was about to intervene, two voices spoke up before she could.
"That’s enough."
"Stop asking."
The words were different, but the meaning was the same, and they spoke almost in unison.
"Let’s stop here for today," Wu Sheng said again, his words an order for them to leave.
Tang Yuanxiao remembered Su Li’s condition from before, and thinking about the situation, his face darkened as he spoke to Mr. Zhang.
"I’ve already told you everything I could about the situation. If you have any other questions, ask me directly."
Mr. Zhang wasn’t blind. He could already see that something was wrong with Su Li.
"My apologies. Su Li, you should get some rest. When you’re able..."
Su Li cut him off. "There’s no need. I can talk now."
In a rapid-fire voice, Su Li recounted what happened after she woke up.
"When I woke up again, I was in that underpass. I happened to overhear what that man said."
Su Li feared she would never forget that man’s voice and his words for the rest of her life.
Mr. Zhang had already heard it once from the group of vagrants. They hadn’t repeated the exact words, but the meaning was more or less the same.
Tang Yuanxiao and Wu Sheng had also heard a rough version before, but this was the first time they heard the whole story.
The three sentences were like three sharp blades, plunging into their hearts one by one.
A murderous aura exploded from Wu Sheng. His gaze was sinister and ice-cold, and combined with his bloodshot eyes, he looked like a demon crawling out of hell.
Mr. Zhang started to speak, but the sheer murderous intent and chilling aura radiating from Wu Sheng made him swallow his words. He couldn’t help but shiver.
If the man had been there at that moment, Wu Sheng might have torn him to shreds in the next second.
Wu Sheng was like this, and Tang Yuanxiao was not much different.
The two waves of murderous intent collided and filled the hospital room, making the atmosphere suffocatingly oppressive.
The oppressive silence was broken by the sound of Su Li vomiting.
As Su Li spoke, she couldn’t help but relive the original ordeal.
The memory made her stomach churn violently, and she finally couldn’t hold it back any longer.
Seeing this, the doctor immediately ushered everyone out of the room.
Outside the room, Wu Sheng watched Su Li’s tormented state, feeling a pain worse than death.
Just then, the officers sent to investigate the suspect in the white car returned. The result was both surprising and yet, not at all.
They hadn’t found a single valuable clue. The trail was completely clean.
Now that they’d heard from Su Li that the culprit was Yang Jiu, this made sense.
"Stop investigating the white car. Go investigate this Yang Jiu person," Mr. Zhang urged.
The first team to leave soon sent back a message, and this time, the news was truly unexpected.
Yang Jiu. No such person existed.
They had followed the information Su Li provided, but there was no record of such a person at all.
There was simply no one named Yang Jiu.
This should have been impossible. After all, the department store had acknowledged the contract signed by Yang Jiu and Su Li, and he had visited her factory—so many people there had seen him.
Yet, following the leads Su Li provided, they came up with nothing. No such person existed.
Mr. Zhang wanted to ask Su Li for a photograph or a composite sketch, but she had already slipped into a brief state of unconsciousness.
The clinical symptoms of a concussion include brief loss of consciousness, retrograde amnesia, as well as headache, nausea, and vomiting. The doctor meant that Su Li’s condition was to be expected.
Fortunately, Li Hongqin and the others had seen Yang Jiu up close and could also provide a description.
Ever since he heard Su Li mention this person, Yang Jiu, and the name of the department store, Wu Sheng had been frowning, lost in thought.
He kept feeling that something was off, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
And... and... the white car was like a fishbone stuck in his throat, something he just couldn’t get past.
While the police were tracking down this Yang Jiu person, Wu Sheng went to a place he couldn’t have been more familiar with, a place he had visited a thousand times before.
"Wu Sheng, what are you doing here? Quick, come in. Have you eaten? If not, I’ll make you your favorite..."
When Ge Ba saw Wu Sheng, a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, followed by delight. He bustled about, greeting him just as he always had.
Wu Sheng stared at Ge Ba in silence, his gaze sharp and heavy, enough to make one’s palms sweat.
Looking at Wu Sheng’s expression, Ge Ba’s words and his smile slowly died on his lips.
He touched the scar at the corner of his mouth where Wu Sheng had hit him and gave a bitter smile.
"Wu Sheng, the police have already questioned me. Do you still suspect me?"
He let out a breath. "I’m truly sorry about what happened to her..."
’Truly, truly sorry...’
Ge Ba lowered his gaze, his voice strained. "But Wu Sheng, we’ve known each other for so many years. Don’t you know what kind of person I am?"
Wu Sheng’s eyes finally shifted. He squeezed them shut for a moment.
’It’s precisely because we’ve known each other for so long that I was so shocked to see it was you in that white car.’
"Look up, Ge Ba. Look me in the eye."
Wu Sheng placed a hand on Ge Ba’s shoulder, forcing him to meet his gaze.
"I’m asking you, are you really not involved in this case? Was everything you told the police the truth?"
’This was his brother, the man he grew up with.’
Ge Ba looked into Wu Sheng’s eyes and slowly nodded.
"That’s right. I’m not involved."
Wu Sheng didn’t release him. "Think carefully before you answer. Was it you? I’m only asking you this one time."
Ge Ba looked at Wu Sheng in silence. "It wasn’t me."
"Fine. I believe you. I hope you don’t let me down."
Wu Sheng released Ge Ba’s shoulder and walked away without looking back.
Ge Ba watched Wu Sheng’s retreating back, his expression unreadable.
Su Li woke for a moment in the afternoon. Tang Yuanxiao was by her side, watching over her.
"You’re awake. Do you want some water?"
Tang Yuanxiao asked, but Su Li just stared at him blankly. After a long moment, she said two words: "Thank you."
Tang Yuanxiao knew she was thanking him for saving her, but her gratitude only made him feel worse.
’If only I’d come a little earlier, or if I’d been more alert, Su Li wouldn’t have suffered so much. She wouldn’t have had to go through this torment.’
"If you’re tired, don’t talk. Just drink some water..."
Tang Yuanxiao choked back the lump in his throat as he spoke, only to see Su Li close her eyes again. He couldn’t tell if she had fallen asleep or passed out again.
Looking at Su Li, Tang Yuanxiao took a deep breath. Unable to bear it any longer, he stepped outside for some fresh air.
He splashed cold water on his face. Once he had calmed down a little, Tang Yuanxiao went back into the room.
Nearly half an hour later, Su Li’s eyes opened again.
Tang Yuanxiao’s spirits lifted. He stood up, about to speak, but the words caught in his throat when he saw the look in Su Li’s eyes.
Su Li stared at Tang Yuanxiao, her expression shifting from a daze to pure hatred. "Tang Yuanxiao," she said, "I didn’t sell Little Mo. I didn’t sell him..."
The hatred in her eyes poured out.
