Chapter 55: Putting Her Heart In Line
As they worked, they chatted and laughed, enjoying each other’s company in the beautiful garden.
After finishing their tasks, they stepped back to admire their handwork. Before them lay a breathtaking sight: a vibrant, thriving garden, teeming with life and color.
They stood together, both glistening with sweat from their physical labor. Thea’s hair, once neatly tied back, was now stuck to her forehead, strands framing her face in a tangled mess. But despite the dishevelment, she looked beautiful.Grandma Grace, too, looked lovely, her silver hair dampened by the heat, her face aglow with a warm smile.
Together, they stood there, two generations of strong, capable women, united in their love of nature and their joy in each other’s company. Despite the sweat and the tangled hair, they were both beautiful, inside and out.
"Now it’s looking beautiful." Grandma Grace commented.
Thea beamed with joy, her face flushed from the physical labor. Grandma Grace’s gaze turned to Thea’s face, and her expression softened. "There was soil on your cheek." she said, her voice gentle.
Her hands instinctively rose to her face, but her grandma was first, her fingers gently wiping away the smudge of soil.
"Thanks, Grandma." Thea said, her voice filled with affection.
Grandma Grace smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "You’re my little gardening buddy."
Days passed, and Thea was busy balancing her art, accompanying her grandma at home, and helping Mrs. Evelyn in her restaurant. One day, while working on an assignment for her English Literature class, analyzing the theme of "Love vs. Society" in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, her phone rang. She picked it up, holding it to her ear.
"Hmm, what’s up?" She asked.
"Thea, you can’t believe how happy I am!" Charlotte exclaimed.
"Tell me, what made you so happy?" Thea asked as she continued with marking the important lines from the book.
"Ryan is coming back tomorrow. I am going to say my feelings to him."
"Are you sure about it?" Thea asked as she stopped highlighting the words hearing her words.
"Yes. I going to do so before it’s too late. You know my father is going to set me up for blind dates here."
"What if he.." Thea stopped herself from saying the rest of the words.
"If he doesn’t accept it then it’s fine with me. I at least confess my feelings even though I would be heartbroken."
"Charlotte... you have loved him for so long. Can you easily accept it?" Thea asked worriedly."I just don’t want you to get hurt, Charlotte."
"Who said I would leave him easily. I would make him fall in love with me if he rejects me."
Thea laughed as she heard Charlotte’s words. Thus she understood what was going on in her mind.
"All the best for your future." Thea wished her truly from her heart.
"Thanks, Thea! Have you started the assignment?" Charlotte asked, changing the subject.
"Yes, I’m going through the lines now."
"Me too! I’ve already begun working on it," Charlotte said."You said your father is setting blind dates for you. Have you attended any?" .
"Of course not!" Charlotte exclaimed, her tone laced with defiance. "I already informed him I like someone else."
"Didn’t he say anything?" Thea pressed on, her interest piqued.
"Yes, he was asking who is the boy I like." Charlotte replied, a hint of mischief in her voice. "But I didn’t utter a word about him to my father. If he learned about him, he would directly go to him and spoil my plan."
"You have plans?"
"Yes, my imagination is infinity. I have many plans." Charlotte said, a mischievous grin spreading across her face.
"Isn’t Ryan your father’s friend’s son?"
"Hmm, that’s why I haven’t said it to him." Charlotte replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Oh girl, you are really something else!" Thea exclaimed, her laughter bubbling over.
"Thanks for the compliment, baby.. Charlotte said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
After they hung up the phone, she couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions. She was thrilled for her friend Charlotte, who had finally mustered the courage to confess her feelings to Ryan. But at the same time, her heart ached with longing. She too had been in love with Ryder, her childhood friend, for what felt like an eternity.
Just like her, Charlotte had succumbed to the thrill of a secret love, her heart beating wildly for Ryan, the son of her father’s closest friend. Their childhood bond had blossomed into a forbidden attraction, with Charlotte harboring a deep longing for the charming and affluent Ryan. Thea had listened with bated breath as Charlotte confided in her about Ryan’s father, a renowned hospital director, and their lavish lifestyle.
As she reflected on her friend’s situation, she couldn’t help but feel a tinge of wistfulness. Like Charlotte, her own heart belonged to someone who seemed out of reach - Ryder, her childhood companion turned object of desire. The parallel between their situations was uncanny, both pining for someone from a different world.
Yet, she felt a surge of joy knowing that Charlotte was finally summoning the courage to reveal her true emotions to Ryan. The thought sent a flutter through Thea’s chest, and she couldn’t help but wonder if she too would find the strength to confess her feelings to Ryder. The uncertainty was palpable, but her heart swelled with hope and excitement for her friend’s future.
Thea’s thoughts swirled with memories of Ryder’s bright smile, his infectious laugh, and the way his eyes sparkled when he talked about his passions. She knew her feelings were true, but she was terrified of rejection. ’What if Ryder didn’t feel the same way?’
As she thought about Charlotte’s situation, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of envy. Her friend was taking a risk, putting her heart on the line, and she truly admired her courage. But Thea’s own fears held her back. She was trapped in a cycle of uncertainty, unsure of how to express her feelings to Ryder.
