Chapter 28: The Dawn of Realisation

She nestled into her studies, attempting to distract herself from the ache of waiting. But her mind refused to cooperate, drifting relentlessly to Ryder.

His face floated before her eyes, a haunting reminder of what she longed for. Every sentence she read, seemed to echo with the same unspoken question: Would he call?

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she finished her coursework. She stretched her arms overhead, arching her back in a languid stretch, and yawned widely.

She stepped into the shower, feeling the warm water cascade over her and dissolve the day’s worries. With her eyes closed, she lingered in the soothing embrace of the moment.

Her eyes locked onto the diary on the bookshelf, and she felt an inexplicable pull. Wrapped in a towel, she swiftly crossed the room and grasped it, holding it close.

"Oh no, I totally forgot about this—what if Charlotte had discovered my secret?"

She swiftly hid the diary in a secure spot. "Thank goodness Charlotte didn’t learn about Ryder from my diary," Thea thought, recalling the intimate confessions she had penned. The mere possibility sent shivers down her spine. "That would have been a disaster!" Thea exhaled a sigh of relief, her shoulders sagging in gratitude. The thought of Charlotte uncovering her feelings for Ryder was unbearable, especially now, when everything remained so uncertain.

Thea’s bed seemed to shrink as she tossed and turned, her racing thoughts consuming her. She struggled to tame her restless mind, but it refused to settle.

"Why am I so wired?" Thea groaned, flipping onto her side for what felt like the hundredth time. "I’m exhausted, but my mind won’t shut up!"

Thea tried the old trick of counting sheep, but even the imaginary flock couldn’t lull her into slumber. "Stupid sheep," she muttered, throwing off her covers and sitting up in frustration. "Why can’t they just jump faster?"

The darkness seemed to amplify her anxieties, as fears about her grandma’s health, her own uncertainties, and the unsettling allure of Ryder swirled together in a relentless storm, keeping sleep tantalizingly out of reach.

"Ryder, Ryder, Ryder." she sighed, her heart aching with longing. "Why can’t I stop thinking about you?" Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes as she felt the familiar ache of loneliness.

Thea groaned, tossing her hands up in frustration. "Why can’t I just fall asleep and escape all this for a few hours?" she implored the ceiling. Yet, her restless mind continued to taunt her, refusing to quiet until the first hints of dawn began to chase away the night’s shadows.

Thea’s thoughts circled back to that pivotal moment when her feelings for Ryder transcended friendship, blossoming into something deeper. The memory remained etched in her mind, replayed countless times like a cherished keepsake, its every detail vivid and unblemished.

She recalled the way Ryder’s eyes shone as he reunited a lost kitten with its mother. His gentleness and empathy had always captivated her, but in that fleeting moment, something shifted.

"I was hooked..." she thought, a warm smile unfolding across her face. "I recognized that my attachment to him transcended friendship."

As she revisited the memory, her heart quickened with thrill and a touch of anxiety. She had attempted to suppress her emotions, worried they might jeopardize their bond. But the more she tried to ignore them, the deeper they rooted.

Her pulse fluttered as she relived the memory, a mix of exhilaration and apprehension swirling within. She had tried to bury her emotions, fearful of disrupting their bond, but the more she attempted to suppress them, the stronger they grew – an unrelenting tide that threatened to consume her.

"I was falling for him, hard." she thought, her eyes fluttering closed. "And there was no turning back."

The memory’s lingering impact on her heart only strengthened her resolve. She knew it was time to confront her fears and reveal her true feelings to Ryder.

Taking a steady breath, she steeled herself for the uncertainty ahead, her mind made up: she would find the courage to confess her love.

"I think that’s when I fell irrevocably for you, Ryder," she whispered.

"When I realized that your kindness and smile had the power to illuminate even the darkest corners of my world." Tears welled up in her eyes as she relived the moment, her soul aching with longing. She had tried to dismiss it as mere admiration, but deep down, she knew the truth - that she was utterly, hopelessly in love with him.

"I was so terrified to admit it, even to myself." she thought, her heart heavy with emotion. "But now, I can’t deny it any longer,Ryder." The words hung in the air like a silent confession, a vulnerable declaration of her deepest feelings.

Unnoticed, she slipped into slumber, her body drained from the emotional upheaval. Daybreak arrived, bringing light into her room. Birds outside trilled a cheerful welcome, a sharp contrast to her earlier worries.

Upon waking, she rubbed the sleepiness from her eyes, still disoriented. She got dressed for a run, her actions routine, her mind hazy. Then, she headed to her grandma’s room.

"Grandma!" she cried out, her heart racing. But the room was eerily vacant, the bed perfectly tidy. "Grandma, where are you?" she called out, her tone trembling.

A surge of fear swept over her. Had something terrible happened to her grandma overnight? Panic drove her to search every inch of the room. She sprinted to the bathroom, her footsteps thundering against the floorboards, but still, there was no sign of her grandma.

With growing desperation, she rushed out into the hallway, her eyes scanning frantically, searching for any glimpse of the woman she loved.

"Grandma, Grandma.."The silence was oppressive.

Thea’s mind raced with worst-case scenarios as she dashed downstairs, her feet pounding the stairs. Where could her grandma be? And why wasn’t she in her room?

Panic set in, its icy grip tightening as she frantically searched every nook and cranny of the house.

Her eyes scoured the living room, scanning the familiar contours of the furniture, and then darted to the kitchen, but her grandma was nowhere to be found. Each empty room amplified her distress, fear clawing at her chest like an insistent whisper: "Where could she be?"

Thea’s worry peaked as she ran to the terrace, dreadful scenarios racing through her mind. But instead of the worst, she found her grandma sitting serenely, eyes closed, basking in the warm sunlight.

"Grandma!" Thea exclaimed, her voice shaking with relief and lingering fear. Tears of joy streaming down her face, she rushed to envelop her grandma in a tight hug. "I was so scared when I couldn’t find you!" she sobbed. "I thought something terrible had happened!"

Her grandma’s eyes fluttered open, filled with calm love, as she gently stroked Thea’s hair. "I’m right here, child," she whispered. "I just needed some fresh air."

"Shh, my dear, I am here.I am safe. Don’t worry...I just needed some fresh air," she comforted, her voice warm and soothing. She caressed Thea’s hair, her touch quieting the chaos within her.

"I was so frightened, Grandma." She wept, her voice smothered against her grandma’s shoulder. "I can’t stand to lose you, too. You’re all I have now."

Her grandma’s embrace tightened, holding her close. "A day will come when I will not be beside you."

"You have to lead the journey of your life, make your own decisions, and chase your dreams." She paused, her chest heavy with emotions.
