Chapter 266: I’ll Ignore You For The Rest Of My Life
Chris stepped forward to comfort her.
"Well, they don’t have a job. All they do is rest at home. You can’t be compared to them." He convinced her.
"Why not? You just don’t want me to go back to work, right?"
"That’s not what I meant," he said.
"That is what you mean, I can tell. You pretend that you listen to and agree with me, but that’s not what you really think. Tell me, do you hate me?" she asked.
As she spoke, fat dews of tears rolled down her cheeks.
He panicked when he saw her cry and he quickly stepped forward to hug her.
"What are you talking about? All I want is to dote on you all the time, so why would I feel that way toward you? Don’t cry, come on, don’t cry. Our baby is going to get upset if you do."
He was about to wipe her tears away with a wet tissue, but she darted away from him.
"Don’t mention our baby to me. You don’t love our baby at all."
She said as she wailed even harder.
Chris felt that his goodwill was extremely misunderstood. Just as he was about to explain, he was, once again, interrupted by Janice. "I’m not going to talk to you about this anymore. You don’t even know what you’ve done wrong. Don’t talk to me and don’t follow me. You’d better not appear in front of me before my anger subsides."
She stood up and stormed out of the office at once.
Chris chased after her abruptly.
"Stop. If you keep following me, I... I’ll ignore you forever." She demanded in response to his rebellion.
Her eyes reddened as tears welled up in her eyes.
This time, Chris did not dare to even move an inch. He just stood there and watched her as she left.
Just then, Rob happened to walk over. When he came upon this scene, he was slightly shocked.
"Mr. Bateman, what’s wrong?" he asked.
Chris glared at him and said, "It’s all your fault. You couldn’t even get a simple job done properly."
Then, he hurried out after her.
Rob was left standing there alone, baffled and confused. "What did I do wrong this time?"
As Chris ran out of the building after Janice, he saw her getting into a cab.
Not wasting any moment, he drove after the taxi.
He kept trying to reach her through her phone along the way, but she rejected all his call attempts, which made him more anxious.
Originally, he had come up with this idea because he thought she would get over the unfamiliarity of it all. However, he didn’t expect it to backfire. It was all Rob’s fault.
As this was going on, Rob was dealing with some paperwork back at the company. He sneezed several times in a row and wondered about his supposed ’mistake’, convinced that he was just following orders.
Chris tailed Janice in his car all the way to an apartment complex by the lake. Once they arrived, she got out and headed straight into the building.
With his anxiety not as gripping as before, he got out of the car and followed her.
She did not notice that he was tailing her and went into the elevator feeling upset. It was not until she stopped at her front door that she finally calmed down and reached out to press the doorbell.
Not long after, the door swung open from the inside. When Yvonne saw Janice, she was surprised.
"Janice, why are you here? Come in!"
Yvonne stepped aside, inviting her.
Janice walked in with a steely expression upon her face.
Yvonne noticed that something was wrong. She closed the door and went after her friend.
"What’s going on?" she asked.
She entered the dining room and poured Janice a glass of water.
She calmed down and said, "Yvonne, I’d like to stay at your place for a few days."
Yvonne handed over the cup and noticed that her eyes were red. She instinctively knew the gist of what might have happened.
"What’s wrong? Were you in an argument with Chris?" she asked.
Janice’s face flushed with anger at the mention of his name. She grabbed the glass of water and drank it up in one gulp, then explaining to Yvonne what Chris had done.
...
Yvonne grinned from ear to ear.
"What are you laughing about? Do you have no compassion for me, for what I went through?" Janice was annoyed.
Yvonne held back her laughter and said, "Your husband is quite interesting. ’I was afraid that you would be tired, so I came up with this idea.’ To think that he could come up with this at the end..."
As she spoke, she couldn’t help but laugh uncontrollably. She rolled her eyes at Janice and quickly stifled her laughter.
"You’re still laughing. I’m about to burst out of anger. Tell me, is it wrong that I want to be a good mother? Other pregnant women attend classes, so why can’t I do the same? Does he think that I’m an idiot?" Janice ranted to her friend.
Yvonne was familiar with her personality. She was harsh with her words, but in reality, she was a soft-hearted person. It’s a typical characteristic of reporters â€Â" she had to be concise with her words and cut to the chase.
So, Yvonne waited until Janice was done complaining before she started to speak.
"Well, okay, if your husband thinks that you’re stupid, do you think he would even bother to pamper you? You should count your blessings instead," Yvonne said.
"Why are you on his side?"
Janice continued to be grouchy in her own dogged way.
Yvonne scowled and added, "I’m not speaking up for him. This is the truth. Let’s talk when you’ve calmed yourself down, alright?"
"Enough about him. Instead, let’s talk about you. How have you been recently? Is it comfortable staying here?" Janice asked.
Yvonne nodded in response as she answered, "Not bad. By the way, I forgot to mention that I’m going to work at First Medical Group."
"Really?" Janice gasped in surprise.
Yvonne nodded her head again in excitement.
"That’s great. I feel much better now that you’ve found a job," Janice said.
After all, Yvonne had lost her previous job because of her.
Yvonne took the opportunity to add, "So, if you stay here, I won’t be around to take care of you."
Janice shook her head.
"That’s okay. I can take care of myself."
Yvonne did not continue to persuade her. "Okay, then you can stay here if you like
to."
<This place is yours anyway.> Yvonne thought to herself.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Yvonne was stunned. "Who could it be?"
She pondered as she walked over to get the door. When she saw Chris standing outside, she hesitated for a moment before asking him, "You must be here for Janice, right?"
Chris nodded. "Is she still angry?"
Yvonne replied, "A little, but I’m sure you can coax her out of her temper tantrum."
As she said so, she took the initiative to move aside and let him in.
"Thank you." He shuffled into the living room and caught notice of Janice, who was sitting on the sofa.
When she noticed Chris coming in, she realized immediately that he must have followed her all this way.
Damn, she didn’t even notice that.
She ignored him and she turned toward Yvonne crossly, asking, "Yvonne, why did you let him in?"
She shrugged. "He owns this apartment. I can’t shut the landlord out."
"Who says that he’s the owner? This unit is rented to you, so obviously you’re the master of this place. Of course you can shut the door on him."
Yvonne refused to say any further, keeping her mouth shut as thought to herself, "I’d better not get involved in your relationship affairs."
She said, "You guys have a talk. I’ll get you a glass of water."
At once, she turned around and went to the dining room, leaving the both of them alone.
When Janice saw Yvonne going away, she was about to leave when she was stopped in her tracks by Chris.
"Honey, don’t be angry. Let’s go home."
"No, I won’t. Didn’t I say that you shouldn’t appear until I calm myself down?" She retorted.
She shook off his hand and was about to escape when he pulled her into his embrace from behind.
"I know, I was wrong. Come back with me. Be a good girl and please don’t turn me into a laughing stock in front of your friend."
Chris persuaded her in a soft voice. His warm breath tickled her ears, and her face
turned shy.
"She won’t bother to laugh at my embarrassment."
As soon as Yvonne came back with the beverage, she watched their public display of affection and frowned. "Janice, there’s too much P.D.A in the room."
...
Janice quickly broke away from Chris’ embrace and glanced at Yvonne. When she met her gaze, she started to feel a little embarrassed.
"We were not..." She trailed off.
Before she could finish her words, Chris grabbed her hand.
"Let’s go. We’re bothering Yvonne," he said.
"Let go of me..."
She struggled to get out of his grip but her efforts were futile. He held her body as he half-dragged her out of the apartment.
Yvonne watched the couple as they left. She chuckled and walked over to shut the door. Right after she did so, she went back to the living room and her phone rang. She picked it up and saw that it was a call from James. She frowned and pressed the mute button, leaving the phone on the coffee table and ignoring the call.
On the other end of the line, James kept initiating the calls repeatedly, but to no avail.
Finally, he put away the phone in frustration and defeat.
Throughout the past few days, she had not answered or returned any of his attempts.
She couldn’t be found, as if she had vanished into thin air.
James gradually got more upset. He clutched the steering wheel with one hand, pulled the tie around his neck with the other hand, and turned to look out of the window.
Ever since Chris had mentioned this place over the phone that night, he had been driving around the area. It had been a few days, but he hadn’t caught any trace of Yvonne at all.
He must have played a trick on him.
The more James thought about it, the more agitated he became. He simply started the car and drove off.
However, as soon as his car emerged out of the apartment complex, he caught sight of Janice and Chris walking out of the building.
"Honey, don’t be angry. I know I was wrong. I’m sorry, okay?" Chris apologized, probably for the hundredth time.
Janice walked ahead, with Chris lagging behind her. Seeing that she was ignoring him, Chris took a big step forward and stood in front of her, blocking her way.
She was forced to stop and face him.
"Since you said you were wrong, tell me your mistake," she said, gazing at him
calmly.
Chris rubbed across his eyebrows uneasily with his fingers.
"Let’s talk about this at home."
"Say it. I won’t go back with you if you don’t tell me exactly what was wrong." She insisted with a straight face.
He felt a little helpless. Their argument was happening at the entrance of a residential complex with tenants passing by every now and then. When he saw them, he felt quite ashamed.
He scanned around insecurely. When he finally saw that they were alone, he lowered his voice and said, "I shouldn’t have asked people to feign their classes and lie to you."
"And?"
Unsatisfied with his answer, she continued to press on.
A little distressed, he wondered to himself, "What else was there? Wasn’t that all there was to it?"
He racked his brains but ultimately, he couldn’t come up with another answer.
As she watched him tear his mind apart, she reminded him. "What did you promise me before?"
He paused for a moment, and then he understood, saying hurriedly, "I agreed with you superficially, and yet I schemed behind your back. I shouldn’t have done that."
Janice was finally happy with his self-reflection and nodded her head. "Since you already know, have you thought of a way to fix the situation?"
Hearing Janice’s question, Chris said hastily, "Don’t worry about it. I’ve already arranged everything. I’ve contacted a new education institution and signed up for a new course. The classes will commence next week, we can go then."
Upon hearing his words, she nodded again in contentment. However, she continued to tease him further, still pretending to refuse his offer.
"In that case, I’ll give you a chance. If I find out that you’re messing around, be careful, I will..." She threatened him.
