Chapter 213: Useless Thing

Janice, who had hung up the phone, kept staring at the phone long enough and laughed foolishly like a charmed damsel for a while.

Christopher called her again. Finally, he called her.

She had thought that he would never call back.

She was excited. It was not until her phone rang again for the second time that she calmed down and glanced at it. However, when she saw the number flashing on the screen, her face instantly darkened.

What did Sophie call her? She had thought it was Chris.

Anyway, Sophie doesn’t always have good news. Besides she didn’t want to be affected by her usual pessimism at this time.

Therefore, she pressed cancel on the call without a budget, turned around, and hummed along as she went back to the kitchen.

On the other end of the line, Sophie listened to the beeping sound from the phone, and knew she had rejected her call. Her face turned soured with anger.

She actually hung up her call!

"Didn’t she beg me to give Nino to her?"

Now, she had the guts to hang up on her.

How absurd!

In that case, forget about taking Nino from her.

As Sophie was in a rage, Finn walked in.

When she saw Finn, she quickly restrained her emotions and kept herself together.

She went up to him.

"How is it? Did Chris agree to let you stay with us?"

Meeting Sophie’s hopeful gaze, Finn felt slightly guilty and shook his head.

"I’m sorry, Sophie, I..."

Sophie’s facial expression instantly changed when she saw his reaction. "All right, don’t say sorry. I knew whatever you do would be useless."

She turned around with a sneer.

Finn stepped forward.

"Sophie..."

"Don’t bother me."

Sophie angrily walked to the table and resumed her work. She didn’t want to waste any time with Finn anymore.

Finn was felt too ashamed to ask for Sophie’s forgiveness, so he didn’t say anything else and lowered his head in dejection as he walked towards the door.

"Wait..."

Sophie suddenly called out to him.

Finn turned around.

Sophie said, "Forget it, you cannot be depended upon. I’ll do it myself. Go cook Chris’ favorite trout amandine. I’ll send it over before noon."

"Sophie..."

Finn wanted to say something yet was interrupted by Sophie.

"Go ahead. Can’t you even do this simple thing?" Sophie said mockingly.

Finn swallowed the words before he could have the chance to utter them and left.

At noon, when Christopher finished working and was about get a quick power nap resting, his secretary Cecilia came in.

"Mr. Bateman, Miss Valen is here."

Christopher frowned. "What is she doing here? Just tell her that I’m not around, would you?."

As soon as he finished speaking, Sophie walked in with a lunchbox.

"Chris, I made your favorite trout amandine." As Sophie spoke, she directly walked in.

Christopher glanced at the figure that came in, and his face immediately darkened.

"I have to work."

He said in a stern voice.

Sophie acted as if she didn’t hear him.

"Chris, no matter how busy you are at work, at least you have to eat."

She opened the lunchbox and handed the chopsticks to him.

Christopher did not reach out to take it. Just as he was about to say something, his phone suddenly beeped. It was a WhatsApp message.

He glanced at Janice’s message. "I’m here."

Christopher smoothed out his brows and unconsciously raised the corners of his mouth into a smile.

"Aye."

After sending the message, he put away the phone and looked up.

Sophie, who was staring at his face in a daze, finally came back to her senses.

"Chris, who... was it?" She asked inquisitively.

Christopher was a little impatient. "You can go back now. I have to continue to work."

"But you haven’t had lunch yet."

Christopher ignored her, and his demeanor was obvious. He didn’t want anybody around. This drove Sophie away.

Although Sophie felt upset at this, she could only have done much but leave. She laid the lunchbox on the desk, turned around, and walked out of the office. From afar, she spotted Janice approaching his office from the other end of the corridor.

...

"Why is she here?"

Sophie recalled Christopher’s expression when he checked his phone and how it suddenly lit up. Could it be that Christopher and Janice were texting all that while? But hasn’t he forgotten about Janice?

How could this be...

Just as she was wondering what was going on, Janice appeared in front of her.

She frowned. "What are you doing here?"

"Isn’t that too obvious? " Janice said bossily, while she raised the food carrier in her hand.

She wasn’t the slightest surprised that Sophie would come here. She had expected it.

Only then did Sophie catch a clearer glimpse of the lunchbox in her hand. She recalled the scene of her being driven out by Christopher and mocked, "Chris is busy and doesn’t have time to see you."

Hearing this, Janice thought that it was pretty awkward. She showed her phone and said, "I just sent him a message. He said he was waiting inside."

She put her phone away and walked to the door.

Sophie gnashed her teeth with hatred. In a bid to discourage her, she brought up Nino to ridicule her.

"You didn’t go to the pet center today. Don’t you want Nino?"

Janice stopped moving when she heard this. She’d sincerely forgotten about it if not for Sophie mentioning it.

She said, "I want it, but I’ve made my decision about it. Chris was hurt because I wanted to save Nino. Now that he has recovered from the brink of death, why should I take Nino back? It will just create unhappiness and trouble."

After that, she turned around and continued walking towards the office. Sophie stood there staring at her back filled with resentment and disgust in her eyes.

When Janice entered the office, Christopher was busy working. When he saw her coming in, he instantly put aside the document in his hand.

"Why did you take such a long time?" He got up.

"I bumped into someone I know on the way, so I exchanged a few words with her.

Are you hungry?" Janice asked.

As she spoke, she placed the food carrier on the table and her gaze fell on the lunchbox Sophie brought. She was puzzled. "Emm? Why is there a lunchbox here as well?"

Christopher frowned but was honest. "Sophie was here just now."

He subconsciously glanced at Janice.

She wasn’t surprised as she nodded her head. "No wonder."

Christopher, however, paused and looked at her for a few seconds. "She was the one you bumped into?"

Janice nodded her head again. "That’s her."

"You and her... there seems to be something going on that I don’t know about."

Christopher was hinting at something.

Janice paused awhile before she shook her head. "No, what could there be between us?"

As she spoke, she uncovered the lunchbox and handed the cutlery to him. She quickly diverged. "Eat while it’s still hot."

Christopher stared at her face. Since she didn’t want to say about it, she needn’t be bothered, why did he have to force her? He reached out to take the cutlery, but when he saw the udon in front of him, which seemed quite different from what he had imagined, he frowned. "Did you make this based on the recipe I suggested to you?"

Janice nodded. "Yes. Try it. See if you like it."

She couldn’t wait to say. Only then did Christopher sit down on the sofa and took a bite of the udon.

"How is it?" Janice was a little nervous.

Christopher tasted it carefully and said, "Not bad. You barely passed."

He lowered his head and continued to eat.

Janice, on the other hand, was a bit disappointed.

"Just barely. Don’t you think it’s delicious?"

She thought that she could win him over by her excellent culinary skills.

Christopher noticed the slight disappointment on her face and paused for a moment. "There is still room for improvement."

"Alright."

At the very least, he didn’t say that it tasted bad. Janice felt quite pleased when she thought of this.

"What about you? Have you eaten anything yet?" Christopher asked.

"I’ve already eaten."

She got up and walked around the office. Everything was still the same as before.

However, she thought of something and asked, "By the way, do you know where Rob is now?" She cunningly enquired.

...

Christopher was slightly taken aback. "Why are you asking about Rob?"

"Oh? I have something that I would like to ask him, and I tried calling him but he did not pick up my call." Janice replied.

Christopher did not say a word, but remembered the reply he had received before.

He frowned.

"Rob ... has travelled abroad."

"Abroad? When will he be back?"

Janice hurriedly pressed the issue when she heard this.

Christopher replied, "I don’t know precisely but It surely will take some time."

"Oh."

Janice couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed.

"What’s wrong? You have urgent matters with him?" Christopher asked.

Janice shook her head. "It’s not something urgent. Don’t worry, I’ll ask him when he returns."

Christopher didn’t say a word, but after a while, asked her, "What... happened to me a while ago?"

"What do you mean?"

Janice didn’t understand.

He fiddled with his hair uneasily. "Just... before I lost my memory."

She blinked when she heard this. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

"What do you want to know?"

He did utter one word. It was not really that he wanted to know. He even somewhat despised what he had done before.

However, ever since he had brought Janice back to the villa a few days ago, he realized that she was not as weak as he had thought. Furthermore, he was also keen on finding out the reason for Rob’s sudden disappearance.

Seeing that he didn’t respond, she didn’t force him. She said, "If you want to know anything, I can help you to recall some of the events whenever."

"Okay."

After Christopher finished his meal, Janice left and also took Sophie’s lunchbox with her. She didn’t want him to eat anything made by another woman, especially Sophie.

When she walked out of the building, she saw Sophie standing at the door. She stood there without moving, watching her approach. It was obvious that she was eagerly waiting for Janice to leave.

Janice didn’t try to avoid her. She walked right past Sophie.

"You really don’t want Nino anymore?"

Sophie didn’t beat around the bush and asked directly, teasing her.

"Yes, you are right." Janice refused.

She spoke in a very casual manner.

Sophie was slightly surprised and thought maybe Janice was just making a casual response.

"Aren’t you afraid that Chris will hold you responsible? Nino is his favorite, you know."

She tried to use Christopher to pressure her into an irrational behavior.

Janice already knew what her intentions were, and she didn’t fall for it.

"If he remembers, he would be even more unwilling to see me reminisce about my past than for the sake of not being able to see Nino."

Her words forced Sophie to instantly shut up.

She seized the opportunity to hand over the lunchbox. "Take this back."

Sophie stared at the lunchbox with silent resentment, but she still took it.

Janice stared at her frustrated and piqued. Her lips curled in a good mood and was about to turn around to leave when she thought of something.

"By the way, you don’t have to worry about my husband’s daily diet. It doesn’t concern you"

Then, she turned around and left.

Sophie stared at her back as she left and angrily roared.

"Do you know what Chris loves to eat? I made trout amandine."

Hearing this, Janice stopped in her tracks. She slowly turned around to look at Sophie, and a confident smile flashed across her face.

"Maybe that was in the past, but now, his favorite food is my udon. Get that!"

After that, she turned around and continued walking forward. While she was walking pass a car, a man got out and walked past her face to face. She couldn’t help but stopped. He looked familiar. She seemed to have seen this man somewhere before.

She turned her head and saw that the man had stopped in front of Sophie. It seemed like he was looking for Sophie. She didn’t think much about it and continued walking.

"Sophie."

Finn alighted the car and saw the lunchbox in her hand.
