Chapter 445: Guilty.
Contd.
Before we go on, I would like for you to know that I was never always greedy. God, I was never even a selfish child to begin with. But the idea of working so hard, of toiling and dedicating years of my youth and even childhood into becoming something, and then suddenly learning that I could have it all taken away from me in the twinkling of an eye didn’t sit right with me.
At all.
And for that reason, I decided to take my fate into my own hands. I decided to make space for myself where it was obvious that the odds were not in my favour.
My hands tightened even more as I listened to them talking at length, a conversation that was mostly centered around how to have the rug pulled from under my feet.
A conversation that would shape my future.
But in all of this, only two things stood out to me the most and while one was the fact that I now knew that I had a shot at the throne, only if something happens to father, the other was the fact that he had been barred from stepping his feet in Stormborn pack.
Why?
Because he has an ongoing feud with the Alpha and his Beta of the pack which also translates to him being an enemy to the pack.
Which also means that if he does go there, he could get in trouble and tell me, which other way do I ensure that without personally seeing to it that he indeed gets into trouble?
How can I be sure of this happening if I do not take matters into my literal hands?
I lowered my head just as these thoughts formed in my mind and then moved back just in time to feign cluelessness. I also increased the sound of my footsteps to make them acknowledge the presence of another person, and by doing so, by the time I stepped into the room, they had shifted the conversation into something completely different. Something about work, pack duties and even politics.
I smiled. "Father, good day Beta and Sir."
The two men, especially the fool who was the mastermind behind all of this, smiled at me despite the shit I had just overheard him talking about me behind my back.
"Darius..."
"This is the folder you asked for, father," I drawled softly, "Alpha Nathaniel has also asked to meet with you some time later this week."
"I will see to that, son. Thank you," father answered dismissively, and with a hand wave, he added; "You can leave now. I’ll send for you later when I want to sort through all of these."
"Thank you father," I muttered with a bow.
And with that, I walked out of the room, but I didn’t stop there. I walked out of the house as well, helped myself to one of the cars he hardly ever uses and used Google maps to locate the Stormborn territory.
It was not difficult to find.
And then I straightened out my collar as I stepped out of my car, ready to begin the rampage that turned out to be the beginning of all the madness that followed...
But at the time, I didn’t care. I was merely saving myself first.
And that I did.
—
Leilani.
(Back to the present)
My body trembled but I do not know if it was the cold or if it was due to the array of sensations all running through my body with different frequencies all at the same time. And as I matched through the big house, cursing out myself for getting carried away so easily, I couldn’t help but relive tiny moments from a few minutes ago.
I couldn’t help but remember how their touches had literally set my soul on fire. How the kiss was so intense, it nearly brought me to my knees....
And how wanton I must’ve been to allow them to touch me like that.
How selfish I was to have easily forgotten about Jarek and let myself be floored by something as minute as a stupid make out session.
Goddess, I might’ve even let them hit if my brain didn’t snap back into focus by the time it did.
The memory brought heat to my face but ignoring it, I went up the stairs... and stopped. Like I literally froze in my steps.
Why?
Because I could no longer remember my way around the house.
Hell, I never even knew it to begin with.
Coupled with the embarrassment and annoyance I initially felt, a strong sense of shame settled at the base of my guts, and in that moment, I cursed myself for being so unfortunate.
So lost.
So... so confused.
"Where the fuck do I even go from here?!" I screamed out in annoyance, stomping my feet against the floor and hating the way even that sound echoed tauntingly around me.
The house was empty and as quiet as a graveyard. But do you know what felt even more empty?
Me.
My heart. My soul. In fact, everything that I stood for.
When my body failed me and collapsed onto the floor this time, I didn’t try to hold myself up. I didn’t even fight it nor hold back the tears threatening to spill from my eyes. I simply let them fall. I painfully let it all out, shaking wildly as all the sensations made my body quake.
"I have stopped mourning Jarek..." I cried under my breath, hating myself one more time for the kisses, the touches and even the wanton moans that had left my lips. "Jay is barely cold in the ground and I have quickly moved on. I have allowed myself to be carried away when I should be mourning the one man that sacrificed every damn thing he had for me."
It was not until this moment that I realized that it wasn’t anger that I felt. It wasn’t even disgust.
It was guilt.
Extreme guilt.
I felt guilty for wanting the triplets. Guilty for allowing what transpired between us to happen... and guilty because I enjoyed it— a little too much.
"He died for me... made me his company’s CEO on his deathbed, and I... I have betrayed him. I have—"
"Done nothing." My wolf snapped, responding to me for the first time in a long time. "You have done nothing, Leilani, and you ought to stop beating yourself up for things that are beyond your control."
I wanted to tell her that they were all within my control but just as I opened my mouth, ready to say the words, the door downstairs creaked open and once again, those familiar yet intoxicating scents filled my nostrils, heading straight for my head.
I tilted my head and dragged in a deep breath, and my voice was barely above a whisper as I drawled; "Yes, it is indeed beyond my control."
