Chapter 405: Impossibilities.
Leilani.
I know that I should avoid the triplets like a plague, but for some reason, I could not. Not when they were in my literal hair like lice. Not when they were hovering around me like smoke, and especially not when I could I feel them... their eyes boring in my skin... and their featherlight touches brushing over my skin like a lustful caress whenever they passed by me.
It was intentional. That I was sure of. I was also quite sure that all of what they did was in an attempt to get me to react strongly to their theatrics.
I buried my face into the laptop in front of me as I tried for several hours to fix the bug problem that Kael had asked— no, begged— me to, and after what felt like forever, like an eternity of breathing through my lips because my nostrils had long stopped working, due to how flustered I was, I finally lifted my head, met his gaze and said;
"It is done."
The bug issue?" Zevran asked, sounding stunned.
"Yes, it is done."
"And you have checked through the document? Have you read our portfolio? The one we said wasn’t good enough and intended to show to the bigger Valemont?" That was Kael and I didn’t even need to turn around to face him as I nodded.
"Yes."
"Wow! That was fast!" Zevran cried out in excitement as he came forward to come sit beside me. While he did so, his arm brushed against mine, sending jolts of electricity rushing through my body.
I almost flinched at the contact but upon biting down on my lower lip and pushing whatever sensation I felt down, I held myself from doing so and said softly; "Are you satisfied?"
He leaned close to the laptop screen, his eyebrows scrunched together as he read through the documents in front of him. He didn’t even need to say a word for me to see how excited he was. And after a moment, he leaned away, pulled me into his arms until I was pressed HARD against him and kissed my forehead with flourish.
"Yes, yes I am satisfied! Thank you so much, Lani!"
His excitement made me smile despite myself. It made my traitorous heart flutter in my chest and made heat bloom on my face. However, I was just about to respond when he turned to his brothers and cried out; "Kael, Caelum, come and take a good look at this!"
I stilled.
It wasn’t until Caelum’s name was mentioned that I finally remembered that he was here with us. Since the break of dawn, he’s been aloof, cold and has kept to himself. He also didn’t bug me like he always would and did nothing besides cast lingering looks at me.
There were moments I couldn’t help but think that he was avoiding me, and now— now that Zevran had called out to him and Kael, and he still didn’t move an inch or especially try to come close, I decided then that he was indeed avoiding me.
I rolled my eyes.
Please goddess, make him remain this way.
Kael however pushed forward and peeked into the screen, and upon seeing what I have spent the past two hours working on, he whistled excitedly, his eyes glowing with joy as he cried out;
"You are so good, Leilani! No wonder Frostclaw keeps you close!"
The compliment made my face burn and I ducked my head, smiling shyly as I whispered; "You’re wrong."
But he didn’t hear me. No one did as Caelum drawled;
"Yes, this is exactly why he has refused to allow other companies pitch themselves to her or propose—"
"Wait what?" I frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Do you not know that you’re a golden egg around town? That everyone has been trying to steal you right from under Alpha Frostclaw’s nose..."
"And he knows!" Zevran cut in, "I do not blame him anyway for wanting to keep you right with him until the very end. You’re so smart!"
Their compliments were making my heart swell so much. It was making me blush so fiercely, I feared my cheeks would crack.
I slowly rose to my feet, pushing away their large bodies that were pressed against mine as I soon began to make my way to the kitchen. However, I had just passed by the dining table when Kael’s phone began to ring.
I stopped, turned to him but then deciding that it was probably none of my business, I turned away.
However, I had just taken a step when I heard Kael sigh under his breath. He asked; "Alpha Frostclaw?"
I froze and spun around but he didn’t return my stare. If anything, he looked like he’d been suddenly pulled into a bubble of his own with his face darkened and his lips pressed into a thin line.
"When? How? Do you have any idea what happened?" He rushed out, causing my heart to skip a beat.
"Now, that is wrong! Look into it please!"
Silence settled in the room as everyone turned to watch him closely, waiting for him to drop the phone so that we could ask him about what was happening, especially since he was trembling so much, I could swear that it was bad news.
A couple more minutes passed before he finally dropped the phone. He looked directly at me and drawled; "Something may have happened to Alpha Frostclaw."
My heart plummeted and for a very brief moment, my brain lost its ability to process information. "Huh?" I asked, "What do you mean?"
Kael shrugged and soon sauntered over to me. And when he was only a couple of feet away from me, he stopped and began to speak. He said; "He didn’t go to work today. He hasn’t been picking his calls or answering any of his texts."
The meaning behind those words hit me square in the chest, but deciding not to think bad thoughts, especially since the situation hasn’t called for one, I shrugged.
"He might be busy," I began to say but stopped when he pinned me with a sharp glare.
"He was last seen yesterday with a woman who has blonde and pink hair. Does that ring any bells?" He asked, and as soon as I heard those words, my throat immediately went dry. Panic slammed into me like a ton of bricks and my hands, once stable, began to shake in terror as I forced out the one word I hated to say;
"Keisha."
"Exactly!" Kael hissed, "he’s either been abducted by her or must’ve willingly gone with her... and you and I know that the second option is as good as impossible."
"It is impossible." I hissed through gritted teeth. "He hates her."
"And she hates you," Zevran added quietly— too quietly, "I think she did this to get to you or to force you out of this house seeing as it is almost impossible to infiltrate."
I did not respond right away because truth be told, there was nothing left to say. And after a moment, Kael finally turned to me and asked; "What do you want to do?"
"I want to go to him." I answered, and goddess, I meant it even though their eyes all darkened in jealousy as soon as I uttered those words.
And even though just the mere thought of seeing her one more time filled me with panic.
"I need to go to him."
