Chapter 88: 88-A Ghost From The Past
Verity:
I hastily reached my floor to grab my belongings and go visit Alpha King Jaguar.
When I heard voices from outside, it sounded as though Ragnar was arguing with someone.
Then he slammed the office door open, came in, and slammed it shut behind him.
My body immediately froze because I could tell he was standing right behind me.
I could see his shadow growing bigger and bigger on the wall ahead.
He was already a tall, broad man.
When he stood behind me, I felt all my muscles tighten.
I slowly turned around and looked up at him.
"Sir, is there anything you need?" I asked, watching him place one hand on his waist and the other against the wall before tilting his head at me.
"Did you suggest that all of you should go see Alpha King Jaguar?" he asked, visibly clenching his jaw.
I briefly paused because I did not understand what was so triggering about that.
Then, swallowing hard, I nodded.
"Yes. The employees told me that Alpha King Jaguar had a fight with a monster," I started to explain.
To be honest, I did not think I had suggested anything crazy.
It was literally one of the nicest things a person could do.
Also, as employees, coworkers, and colleagues, we should visit each other and help each other out.
But I had no clue what had angered Ragnar.
"And where do you think my brother is?" he asked.
His presence was so imposing that I felt my throat starting to close.
"At some cabin," I replied.
"And how would you know that?" he asked, his voice turning even harsher.
"I don’t," I quickly defended myself. "One of the employees suggested it."
I was still speaking when he raised his hand to silence me, holding up his palm as if to say, that’s enough.
"You’re not going anywhere. And next time you plan something like that, come speak to me. Don’t fucking make decisions for my employees. You hear me?" he snapped, pointing at me.
I was honestly stunned.
This was one of the nicest things a person could do for their boss, and this asshole was yelling at me.
"Besides, if he’s heading out on a trip with his brothers, he’s fine. Don’t focus on the rumors," he added as he adjusted his coat.
"So he didn’t fight a monster?" I asked.
The minute he stretched his neck and cracked it, I realized I needed to shut the fuck up.
"Okay, I’m sorry," I replied immediately.
"We’re leaving for a trip tonight. I won’t be around the office. In the meantime, I’ll have my new Royal Beta come over and help you run things here. So get along well with him and listen to him. Don’t go around gossiping and leaving work out in the cold."
He said it bitterly, already making it seem as though he thought I loved gossip.
That was crazy.
If anything, I had not spoken to a single person to gossip about anything.
For someone to gossip, they needed people to listen.
I could not exactly gossip with a wall.
It seemed like Ragnar was just very biased.
And of course, I could not argue with him, so I simply nodded.
He then walked over to the table, grabbed his things, and prepared to leave.
That was annoying.
I really thought I had left enough of a mark on the brothers to ruin the trip for them.
But it seemed like Ragnar had taken matters into his own hands.
And I could definitely tell he was dragging his brothers along with him.
They would never be able to complain to him or mention me in front of him.
It felt like I had made a mistake by admitting that I was in a relationship, but I had convinced myself it was all going to work out eventually.
So here I was, sitting alone in the office, waiting for the Royal Beta to come over and take charge while the brothers were probably packing their shit for the trip.
I sighed and slammed the file shut when I received a text from the manager informing me that the new Royal Beta had arrived.
Apparently, he was checking in on every floor before making his way to mine.
I took a deep breath, grabbed the files, and walked out to welcome him along with the other employees.
The employees were already standing in a line when I stepped outside.
It seemed like the Royal Beta had already met all of them before he turned to look at me.
And that was when my heart almost stopped beating.
I could not believe I was seeing this man again, let alone that he was now in charge while all the other authority figures were gone.
"Ah, have we met before?" he asked, tilting his head and blinking.
The way his eyes scanned over my body made me feel stripped naked.
But I held my composure.
The employees were watching me.
Of course they were.
They always did.
Women and men alike would stand around and watch a new person interact with me so they could gossip about it later.
Usually it would be something like, ’Did you see how she pushed her breasts out?’ Or, ’Did you notice her ass jiggle when she walked away and the man looked at it?’
So all eyes were on me, and I could not even react to the asshole standing in front of me.
Not just any asshole.
Gigi’s brother.
Oliver Hill.
"Ha, Verity Swan. Isn’t that it?" he asked.
The moment he said my name, I could tell this was not a coincidence.
He had already been informed about me.
Well done, Gigi.
It seemed like we were both playing games behind each other’s backs.
"Yes. I’m Ragnar’s secretary," I introduced myself back to him.
But this time, I could see a slight frown forming on his forehead.
It informed me that he was noticing the changes in me.
Because, let’s be honest, I was not the same Verity he had met before.
This Verity would not let him take advantage of her.
And I was so glad he had actually shown up.
Not because I was happy to see him.
I was glad because now I had a side quest.
Taking revenge on him as well.
"Okay, well, let’s go sort things out in the office, shall we?" Oliver said, pointing toward Ragnar’s office.
My heart immediately started to skip beats as flashes from the past hit me hard.
Hot, unpleasant memories I had no desire to revisit.
