Chapter 127: 127-I Was Drugged
Verity:
"Step away from my property," the old man hissed.
Cold sweat broke out across my skin.
It wasn’t like I could just take the footage and run. He could call the police.
He could point me out and tell them I’d tried to steal it.
Even if he didn’t know my name, it would be easy for him to recognize me.
"Listen, I—I just need the footage," I pleaded.
Instead of answering, he walked to the desk, pulled a gun from the drawer, and pointed it at me, forcing me to back away from the monitor.
I was already feeling nauseous and sick.
He kept the gun pointed at me as he walked over and shut down the computer.
I knew then that even if I got the footage, I’d still have to get past the password.
He motioned for me to move aside, and I did, stepping away from the monitor completely.
"Listen, I can explain," I said, but he shook his head.
Now he stood in front of the monitor while I remained on the other side of the desk.
I watched him type in the password and bring the computer back to life.
Then I heard it.
He played the exact footage I had just been watching.
He looked up at me, then back at the screen.
This time, his expression was even more troubling.
He looked up and nodded.
"I should’ve recognized you the moment you walked in," he muttered. "But how was I supposed to know someone who looked so innocent could be this vicious?"
He tightened his grip on the gun, his hand trembling with anger.
"I’ll take this footage straight to the Alpha Kings so Alpha King Ragnar can see who attacked his brother-in-law."
"Please don’t do that. It’ll ruin my life," I pleaded.
Instead of lowering the gun, he began shaking even harder, silently warning me not to take another step.
"Ruin your life? You assaulted a man, then came here to trick me into leaving so you could delete the footage. If anything, you belong behind bars. You’re a dangerous, dangerous snake of a woman."
Every word sent goosebumps racing across my skin.
I placed a hand on the table to steady myself.
"What the fuck is wrong with you? Are you on drugs?" he demanded and I shook my head.
"No. It’s just my medication," I uttered, pressing a hand to my neck.
I felt like I was about to have a heart attack.
I didn’t know what was happening to me.
Everything was spiraling out of control.
I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears.
This felt different.
It wasn’t from the lack of sleep. It wasn’t from my unhealed wounds.
It wasn’t even from the medication.
It was something else.
A low grunt escaped the old man.
I forced my head up and saw his face had gone pale.
The gun slipped from his hand as he clutched his chest.
He tried to reach the computer to shut it down, but his legs gave out, and he collapsed to the floor.
I forced myself upright and looked from him to the monitor.
He was having a heart attack.
"Help—me," he gasped.
My eyes drifted back to the screen.
It was an impossible choice.
If I let him die and deleted the footage, no one would ever know what had happened there.
He would be dead. The evidence would be gone.
I’d have a chance to survive this.
But what if I saved him, he recovered, and then discovered I’d deleted the footage?
I’d be finished.
My trembling fingers reached for the mouse.
"Please— help me."
I squeezed my eyes shut and deleted the footage.
When I opened them again, I turned toward him.
The ambulance would take too long to get here, and my body was screaming in pain.
There was no way I could help him on my own.
But I had to try.
I hurried over and grabbed his hand.
Shock flickered across his face, but he didn’t resist as I pulled him onto my back.
I kicked off my heels and forced myself out of the shop.
My whole body shook as I stumbled toward the road.
My hands trembled so badly that I nearly dropped my phone while calling for a cab.
After only a few steps, one pulled up.
I helped the old man into the back seat before climbing in after him.
"Hospital," I whispered, my voice barely audible.
By the time we reached the hospital, we were both rushed in on stretchers.
He was taken to a separate room while the doctors tried to figure out what the hell was wrong with me.
Through the haze of voices and bright lights, they kept asking who the old man was.
I kept asking how he was, and one of the nurses told me he had suffered a heart attack but had arrived in time or else it would have been too late.
Before I could learn anything else, I blacked out.
When I finally woke up, it was already night.
I guess the sleep I’d wanted so badly to have in my own bed ended up happening in a hospital instead.
"Your test results are back."
The doctor walked into the room with a file in her hands.
"I’m glad you’re awake," she said.
Since I had once worked as Ragnar’s secretary, I’d been admitted to one of the better hospitals in the Beta community.
But the doctor knew I was an omega, and it was obvious she wasn’t thrilled about treating me.
She looked mildly irritated as she flipped through my report.
"What test?" I asked, frowning as I noticed the IVs and monitors attached to me.
"Your blood work," she replied.
She studied the report for another moment before looking up at me.
"It seems there was a sedative in your bloodstream. Not a prescribed one. Someone drugged you."
"What? No. I only took my prescribed medication," I said.
The doctor shook her head.
She already had my purse, and the hospital staff had gone through my prescriptions and the pills I’d brought with me.
"That’s not what I’m talking about," she said.
The next words out of her mouth pulled the ground out from under my feet.
"Your blood work detected traces of GHB. It’s a powerful sedative commonly associated with drug-facilitated assaults."
