Chapter 106: 106-I Can Play Better Games
Verity:
"What did you say?" I asked him in confusion.
"I said, do you not have anything to say in your defense?" he asked, making me narrow my eyes at him before glancing around in confusion, trying to confirm if he was really talking to me this way.
I could tell from the way he was looking at me that the fact I was not immediately explaining myself was humiliating to him.
He already knew I had found out.
Yes, he wasn’t wrong. I had figured it out when he started to act differently.
"No, I don’t. I’m not sure what you’re talking about." I continued to act innocent, mainly because I wanted to give him the impression that I wasn’t even thinking that far into it.
"Your phone was—I found your phone in Ragnar’s pants pockets."
The fact that Jaguar took all the blame on himself really disappointed me.
It gave me the impression that I still wasn’t doing very well.
If he wasn’t even going to scream Gigi’s name out loud and kept shielding her behind his broad back, then this wasn’t going to work.
I turned to him and frowned in confusion, making it clear that I was genuinely appalled by his actions and the games he was trying to play with me.
"We need to have a talk." He then pointed toward the empty street.
I stared at his hand and then at the empty street.
At this point, I had to talk to him because his anger seemed to come from something much deeper.
If I let things go any longer, he was going to get the wrong idea about me, and I couldn’t afford that.
Every time I took a few steps forward, I was pushed back by Gigi.
This time, I wasn’t going to let that happen.
So, after giving him an explosive look, I walked past him and headed toward the street without saying another word.
The moment we reached the street, I leaned back against the wall while he stood against the wall opposite me.
It was a narrow passage, not even a street, but a very tight alleyway.
"What do you want me to explain?" I asked, folding my arms across my chest.
"You left—" He paused and took a deep breath, as though it was difficult for him to say the words.
"Hold up," I cut in before he could say any more nonsense.
"I left what?" I asked, watching him go through a plethora of emotions.
Something was definitely stirring inside him.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t be this bothered.
Or was he bothered because of Gigi? Because he thought she would ultimately end up heartbroken?
"The other night, when you brought Oliver in, you and Ragnar were in the backyard. Then the two of you suddenly left. Later, he came home late that night, all hard and desperate, and slept with Gigi as if his body was on fire. Then your phone was found in his pocket."
He started explaining everything, thankfully giving me the information I had hoped for.
It confirmed what had happened on the other side of the mansion, at the back, where I had been completely unaware of what was going on.
To be honest, I had not thought Ragnar had gone to have sex with her.
It gave me a sense of relief and victory at the same time.
That being said, it also meant he had left my home aroused.
There were a few other things I had noticed about Ragnar that night.
He had been pretty rough.
So I could only imagine him being just as rough in bed.
The way he had held my neck, the way he had grabbed my hair, made me wonder if he and Gigi had been just as rough with each other the night before.
I had planned this meeting carefully.
I started to chuckle, shaking my head in disbelief, my arms folded across my chest.
"We left because I had an accident," I mumbled, watching him narrow his eyes.
"What accident?" he asked.
"Don’t worry. Whatever you’re thinking didn’t happen," I said, making it clear that he had already upset me to the point where I wasn’t going to tell him what had happened to me.
"What do you mean by an accident?" he asked, his tone shifting as concern crept into his voice.
But I knew this was the moment I had to stop him.
"You don’t need to worry about that," I replied, making it clear that he should have asked me before jumping to conclusions. "All in all, it was your brother who helped me through that. And no, nothing happened. I’m not that kind of woman. Just because I let you—" I paused, clenching my jaw and my fists, making it obvious how deeply humiliated I felt.
"I’m not saying you are," he replied instantly.
But I stopped him by raising my palm.
"Yes, my phone was left in your brother’s pocket because he was using the flashlight while I was behind the tree fixing my clothes."
As I said those words, I realized that if Gigi had told him everything, she must have also told him about the phone call and the things I had said that gave him the wrong impression.
I was right. The way Jaguar suddenly froze, then slammed his palm against his forehead, gave away that she had indeed told him about my words.
"So that’s what it was about," he murmured to himself.
"What? What was that about?" I asked, looking at him in confusion.
"What was that accident? I mean, why were you fixing your clothes?" he asked, still trying to get a better explanation from me.
"Because something bit me. So I went into the woods with your brother. He used the flashlight to make sure I was safe while I was behind the tree taking care of myself."
I paused and then yelped.
"Wait, what? What did you think happened?" I asked, taking the opportunity to make him feel guilty for suspecting me.
"Nothing. I just want to know what bit you. What was the accident?"
As he started pressing me again, I stepped away, walking backward toward the end of the alley.
"Wait. You really thought I was with your brother? The man who’s already taken? Do you really see me as that kind of woman?" I raised my voice.
Then I slowly nodded, as though it had just hit me.
"Oh, so that’s why he was slut shaming me at the café."
The moment I said that, I watched his face turn pale.
