Chapter 49: 49. His misery

"Why did you disobey me, Leo?" Darren asked. The look in his eyes was interns and piercing.

Leo looked at Logan for help but Logan looked the way when his eyes met with Leo’s who sighed helplessly to himself. At least the alpha allowed him to deal before letting out his annoyance. "I couldn’t just leave when all that was happening, alpha," Leo said meeting Darren’s gaze he added, "I am. Sorry for my disobedience, but I won’t be at ease knowing that something is as happening while I did nothing."

Darren looked at Leo with deep eyes and an unreadable expression on his face he said and just stared at him. Leo didn’t know her but felt like his words didn’t reach the man whom it was intended for. "Alpha..." He was about to speak when he saw Darren’s lips move.

"The next time you disobey me again you will be lucky to stay alive," Darren said and turned around to leave.

He knew that Leo was right. Leo was born and raised in the Shadow moon pack so no matter what happens, the safety of the pack and his family will always come first. Having found his mate a year ago, all he will want to do would be to keep her safe and protected and knowing that the pack was under attack, there was no possible way he would have been happy and relaxed no matter where he was.

Darren wondered what it felt like to have your other half in your arms. To feel the need to keep her safe, to protect someone. He protects the packs under him because it was his responsibility as the alpha and not because he wanted to. He had forgotten what it felt like to be loved and protected aid had never had the desire to protect anyone ever since his first shift. The one whom he had wanted when he was still a pup was no more all thanks to him.

He climbed up the stairs and walked up to his room. He walked in and slammed the door shut behind him. His hair was messy and his clothes looked haggard. He needed a bath. Not just to clean his blood-stained body and clothes, but also to cool off. To clear his mind and arrange his thoughts.

He took off his clothes and then walked inside the bathroom naked. Standing under the shower, he turned it on. The water rained down on him and he lifts his face to face the shower. The water washed off the dried blood that was on him painting the floor underneath his feet red. He then grabbed the soap for a quick wash. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

After leaving the bathroom Darren headed for the bed. He stood two steps away from it and started at it. He couldn’t decide whether robust it or not. People go to the end to sleep but he knew that he would never be able to do that without having his sleep haunted by nightmares.

His eyes trailed to the moon whose light piqued through the curtains. "I hope you are happy watching my misery, Selene," Darren mumbled. while every shifter always prays for a chance encounter with the goddess, Darren just wishes she never existed and he was never created. He loathed her.

Climbing onto the bed, Darren stared at the ceiling wide-eyed praying not to fall asleep or at least one peaceful night without having to witness his most dreaded moment again and again. But luck was not on his side as his eyelids dropped close and fell into a deep slumber such was haunted by his past mistakes.

Downstairs, Leo looked at Logan with a little pout while Logan was smiling from ear to ear. Lucy and Lucinda just listen to their banter and laugh now and then. "What part of, ’The next time you disobey me, you will be lucky to be alive’ is funny to you?"

"None of it," Logan said, drawing in a deep breath and trying to steady his breathing. Leo glared at him and he continued. "The funny that about all of that was the expression on your face after he said that, it was hilarious."

"There was nothing funny about it," Leo said still glaring at Logan.

"If you don’t believe me, then you can ask them, I believe they saw it too," Logan said and Leo turned to the girls who were grinning at him. "See? I told you so."

"I am leaving," Leo said standing on his feet. "You are all terrible friends. I was being threatened with my life and all you can do is laugh at me."

"Did you expect us to go against the alpha?" Lucinda asked crossing her hands on her chest. "We all know that we can’t do that even if we want to."

"I never said, ’Go against the alpha’, all I am saying is be understanding and not laughing at me," Leo replied now glaring at Lucinda who still had a grin on her face. "You know what it feels like if you were the one being threatened." He mumble under his breath but it was useless as the people inside were not humans and could still hear him.

"You would have laughed if it were any of us who was threatened just like how we are laughing at your fight now," Lucy said, Logan Concord nodded his head at Lucy.

’No do you understand? It’s not our fault, we just can’t help it." Logan said with a shrug of his shoulder. "Don’t worry, the next time we will ’try’ to defend you," Logan said patting Leo on the shoulder lightly before letting it rest on him, Leo pushed his hand away.

"Speak for yourself, I will not be the foolish one to stand up for you when the alpha is mad." Lucinda shamelessly stated and Leo became even angrier and stumped his foot before turning and walking.

"I have a mate whom I need to return to. At least she knows how to appreciate me." He said walking out of the Alpha’s mansion.
