Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Braised or Stewed

Gu Rong quickly jumped off the back of the cart. He felt around near the makeshift fence and found a sizable stone.

He tiptoed back onto the cart and stared down at the snake. Seeing it was about to slither under the wheel, he forcefully smashed the stone down.

The stone landed right on the snake’s head, crushing it to a pulp in one blow.

Gu Rong was about to get off the cart to pick it up when Gu Qing said, "Uncle, wait. I’ve heard snakes are hard to kill. Last year, I heard about a family who had medicinal wine with a snake steeping in it for ten years. When they went to pour the wine, the snake suddenly lunged out and bit someone on the mouth."

"They said it was a venomous snake. The person didn’t last long after that."

Gu Rong chuckled. "I’ve heard that story too. The snake was long dead, of course, but snakes hold grudges. They’ll get their revenge even after death."

Gu Qing handed him the machete. "Then give it a couple more whacks."

Gu Rong took the machete, got off the cart, and carefully pried the stone away.

Then he picked up the stone and smashed it down hard on the snake’s head several more times, until it was well and truly dead. Only then did he use the machete to pick up the snake and hang it on a nearby dead tree. "This one’s venomous, but venomous snakes taste better."

"Tomorrow morning, I’ll have Second Sister-in-law make snake soup."

The rest of the night passed peacefully enough.

The sky was just beginning to lighten when the old lady got up.

The elderly tend to wake up early.

As soon as the old lady was up, Lian’er, who slept with her, had no choice but to get up too. The old lady urged her to put away the bedding, then sent her to gather some firewood from the surrounding area.

Lian’er glanced at her mother and younger brother, who were huddled at the base of the wall, then silently went off into the wilderness to gather firewood.

Before long, the other women began to wake up one by one.

The women were used to rising early to make breakfast.

The village chief’s second daughter-in-law, Hongxia, was looking for a place to relieve herself when she suddenly saw the dead snake hanging from the tree and started screaming uncontrollably.

Gu Fei was jolted awake by the noise. She sat up abruptly. ’What’s happening?’

She peeked through a gap in the mule cart and saw Hongxia pointing at the dead snake, still screaming.

Gu Fei quickly threw on her clothes and ran over to look at the snake. "Wow, this snake is thick! It’ll definitely be delicious braised in soy sauce."

Hongxia had already run far away.

Uncle Ma, standing nearby, looked at the snake and nodded. "Braised is better than stewed."

Gu Fei turned to Uncle Ma. "I’ve heard it’s good deep-fried, too."

Uncle Ma stroked his chin. "I’ve never had it deep-fried. Can’t say if it’s good or not."

Gu Fei had never had it deep-fried either. In her past life, before the zombie apocalypse, she had tried a few different styles at restaurants. It was ridiculously expensive—a single pot of snake meat cost several hundred yuan.

Just thinking about the taste made her mouth water now.

Gu Rong walked over. "Little Fei, you know how to cook snake?"

Gu Fei nodded emphatically.

Gu Rong waved his hand. "Then you cook it. Our two families will share it. I’m the one who caught it last night."

Gu Fei was so happy she nearly jumped for joy. "Uncle, then I’ll really cook it!"

She looked at Uncle Ma. "Uncle Ma, do you know how to prepare a snake? How about you handle that part, and I’ll do the cooking."

Uncle Ma chuckled. "That’s something I’m actually good at."

He’d traveled far and wide and had spent his fair share of nights sleeping in the wild. He’d eaten plenty of snake meat.

Gu Fei quickly ran back to call Er Lang and Sanlang to build a stove. She bustled about, grabbing a kitchen knife, a cutting board, and an iron pot. She also rummaged out the seasonings from her personal space.

In no time, Uncle Ma had finished preparing the snake on a flat stone slab.

The organs had all been removed and buried in the dirt. Gu Fei took the gutted snake aside, secretly rinsed it clean with water, placed it on the cutting board, and chopped it into sections.

Then, she heated some oil in the pot and added the snake meat to stir-fry.

By this time, everyone was awake and had gathered around Gu Fei to watch her cook the snake.
