Chapter 75: Chapter 75: To Buy or Not to Buy?
Gu Fei was so shocked by Ms. Qian’s words that she forgot to take another bite of her flatbread.
’Only people who are serious about buying something bother to haggle,’ she thought. ’If you’re not buying, the price doesn’t matter. Is Ms. Qian actually going to buy this girl?’
The mother’s body trembled slightly. The girl named Lian’er knelt on the ground with her head bowed, looking utterly mortified.
The woman suddenly turned to Ms. Qian. "Ma’am, how about two measures? Lian’er is strong. She can not only do housework but also work in the fields. You won’t regret buying her."
Ms. Qian’s eyes darted about as she considered the offer. She was tempted.
Gu Zhong was a "hands-off" husband; aside from driving the cart and fetching water, he didn’t lift a finger.
And that wretched girl, Xing’er, was so disobedient. It was worse now that they weren’t at home; just a few words of scolding and she would run off.
Now, even the old lady wouldn’t help her anymore.
Her son, Bao’er, refused to walk. Today, she had carried him for an hour, and Xing’er had carried him for an hour.
’If I buy this girl as a child bride for Bao’er, not only will she be an extra pair of hands for chores, but she can also carry Bao’er on the road. Then, I won’t have to spend money on a wife for him in the future. It’s a perfect solution that solves multiple problems at once!’
The only catch was the food for an extra mouth, which Ms. Qian was reluctant to spare.
’But then again,’ she thought, ’what’s there to worry about? Our own grain won’t last much longer anyway, and I don’t plan on buying more. When the time comes, we’ll just have to mooch off Gu the Second’s family. He can’t possibly watch his own brother’s family starve to death, can he?’
The more Ms. Qian thought about it, the better the deal sounded. Gu the Second’s family would provide the food, while her family got a servant girl for free. There was simply no better arrangement.
She scoffed at the woman. "One measure of cornmeal. Not a bit more. Take it or leave it."
The woman was still hesitating.
Mrs. Chen suddenly let out a cold laugh. "It seems Sister-in-law has too much food to spare, buying another person to help you eat it."
"Let me make myself clear right now: if your family runs out of food, don’t come crying to us! We barely have enough for ourselves!"
Ms. Qian hadn’t expected Mrs. Chen to see right through her scheme. She stiffened her neck and retorted, "So what if your family eats white flour? Does that give you the right to look down on people?"
Mrs. Chen just sneered from the side.
The mother, afraid Mrs. Chen would ruin the deal, quickly said, "I’ll take it! One measure of cornmeal is fine, I’ll take it."
Now it was Ms. Qian’s turn to hesitate. Mrs. Chen was a formidable woman; if she said she wouldn’t give them food, she probably meant it.
If she bought the girl, she’d lose the grain. If she didn’t, she’d miss out on such a bargain.
Gu Zhong frowned. "Are you crazy? We barely have enough food for ourselves. What are you buying her for?"
The woman quickly pulled Lian’er over and kowtowed to Gu Zhong. "Good sir, please, have a heart and buy this girl. She doesn’t eat much. Two corn buns a day is all she needs to survive."
Just then, Donglai from the Zhang family giggled. "Bao’er, your mom’s buying you a wife!"
"HA HA HA HA!" Everyone burst into laughter.
Seeing everyone laughing so heartily, Donglai’s little face was full of smug satisfaction.
Lan Zhi heard this and tightly gripped the corner of Gu Fei’s sleeve. ’A girl is being sold for just one measure of grain!’
’But her own price was 1800 taels of silver!’
’And she couldn’t even do any manual labor!’
’She knew how precious food was now. If the Gu Family ever reached the end of their rope, she would probably be the first one they’d sell!’
Just then, Gu Erlang, who was beside her, whispered, "Don’t be afraid. Even if the family runs out of food, I will protect you. I’ll find food for you. I won’t let them sell you."
Lan Zhi looked down and realized she wasn’t clutching Little Fei’s sleeve at all—it was clearly Gu Erlang’s!
’When did he sit down next to me?’
Lan Zhi’s face turned beet red as she let go, her heart pounding in a fluster.
