Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Happiness for Nothing
Gu Fei wasn’t actually that scared. ’She’d seen zombies, so why would she be afraid of some refugees?’ Besides, she had plenty of weapons in her dimensional space.
During the apocalypse, when the zombies broke out, weapons were the key to survival.
The military factory at the base produced guns and ammunition day and night.
In her dimensional space, she had two Type 95 light machine guns, three Type 92 pistols, and one Type 81 heavy machine gun. These were all domestically produced and previously supplied exclusively to the military, and she had more bullets than she could ever use.
When she died, she had been holding a heavy machine gun. It was a pity she couldn’t bring it with her.
She even had quite a few grenades in her space.
’It couldn’t be helped. After all, she was just a weakling who only had a Space Ability. She had to rely on these things to survive, but in the end, they weren’t enough to save her life.’
However, she couldn’t use these things unless it was an absolute last resort. These weapons were far too advanced for this era; the court would never allow such a dangerous element to exist.
Gu Zhang finally concluded, "Let’s stick with this plan for now. It’s still about ten days until we reach West Mountain County, so don’t worry too much. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. We’ll find a way."
With heavy hearts, the group set out again. The mule carts traveled one right after another, much closer together than before.
Seeing the somber atmosphere, Uncle Ma shouted, "We can stop early today! There’s an inn by the main road about seven miles ahead. If we hurry, we can get there by late afternoon."
Everyone’s spirits lifted, and they pressed forward.
After traveling for more than an hour, Boss Zhang sent his niece, Zhang Xiaocui, to rush to the front and ask Uncle Ma, "Uncle Ma, how much longer until the inn? My family is out of drinking water."
One of their water jugs had shattered the day before, so they were short one jug’s worth of water.
Uncle Ma looked at the side of the road and pondered for a moment. "Soon," he said. "Fifteen minutes at most."
Zhang Xiaocui ran back and told Boss Zhang, "Uncle Ma said we’re almost there! Fifteen minutes at most."
Boss Zhang was so thirsty his throat was parched. ’Once we get to the inn,’ he thought, ’I have to get another water jug. We just don’t have enough.’
After about another fifteen minutes, Uncle Ma shouted, "The inn is just around this next bend! Keep it up, everyone!"
Driving his cart at the very front of the procession, Uncle Ma rounded the bend. He froze, staring at the side of the road. Where the inn should have been, there was only a patch of scorched earth and a few blackened rafters scattered across the ground.
He drove the cart closer and stopped, sighing as he looked at Gu Zhang. "Looks like we’ll be sleeping in the wild tonight."
The other carts caught up. Boss Zhang stopped his and looked around, seeing no inn. He hurried to the front. "Uncle Ma, where’s the inn?"
Uncle Ma pointed to the rubble by the side of the road. "Right there, isn’t that it?"
Boss Zhang stared at the scorched ruins, his mouth agape. It was a long moment before he finally spoke. "Then where are we supposed to sleep tonight? And my family is out of water! What are we going to do?"
Everyone gradually gathered around. Uncle Ma spread his hands helplessly. "I had no idea the inn burned down. The last time I passed through here was a few years ago."
The village chief came closer. "So what should we do? My family doesn’t have much water left either."
Gu Zhang looked at Uncle Ma. "Are there any other inns nearby?"
Uncle Ma looked up at the sky and shook his head. "The nearest town is still over twenty-five miles away."
