Chapter 68: Chapter 68: What Are Sons For?

Xing’er put down the bowl in her hands. "I’m not going. If you want to go, go yourself." With that, she dashed off.

Ms. Qian was furious. Seeing Xing’er disappear in a flash while Bao’er was still crying on the ground, she shouted at Gu Zhong, "Are you dead or something? Bao’er is making such a scene, and you won’t do a thing about it."

Gu Zhong squatted nearby, not making a sound.

Ms. Qian gave him a shove. "You go ask. Your second brother will at least give you that much face."

Gu Zhong mumbled, "I’m not going. It’s too humiliating. It’s not like we’re out of food. If Bao’er wants to cry, let him cry. It won’t kill him."

Ms. Qian cursed hatefully, "Useless thing."

Turning to see Bao’er crying so hard he could barely breathe, she hurried over to coax him. "Mommy doesn’t have any flour here. Why don’t you go to your Second Uncle’s and beg for some? Then Mommy can make it for you."

Bao’er refused. "Sister Xiao Fei won’t give me any. She’s ruthless!"

Having been thwarted by Gu Fei twice, he knew she wasn’t his mother—he couldn’t just throw a tantrum on the ground and get whatever he wanted from her.

Little Fei was heartless—that’s what his mother always muttered in private. She hadn’t stopped saying it since the incident with that piece of candy.

Ms. Qian lowered her voice. "Little Fei won’t give you any, but your grandma is still over there. If you take a bowl over, your grandma will definitely have to give you a share."

Hearing this, Bao’er thought it made perfect sense. Back home, his grandmother always prioritized him, giving him the best of everything to eat.

Bao’er shot to his feet and ran over to Gu Fei’s family without even grabbing a bowl.

He ran straight up to the old madam. "Give that to me to eat." The moment the words were out, Bao’er snatched the bowl from her hands and started to walk away.

The old madam was stunned. She stared at her empty hands, unable to process what had just happened.

Gu Fei, who had seen everything clearly from the side, put down her own bowl. She shot to her feet, caught up to Bao’er in a few strides, snatched the bowl from his hands, and turned to walk back.

But Bao’er wasn’t one to give up so easily. "That’s mine! Grandma gave it to me!" he yelled, charging at Gu Fei like a little bull calf.

Gu Sanlang’s arm shot out, grabbing him by the back of his collar. "What do you think you’re doing? Getting bold, are we? Now you dare to snatch things!"

Gu Fei handed the bowl back to the old madam. Holding the bowl, the old madam found herself in a very awkward position.

For a moment, she didn’t know whether she should continue eating or not.

Her grandson wanted it, so she couldn’t just refuse him.

But giving it to him wasn’t right either. After all, this was food from her second son’s family.

Gu Fei glanced at her. "Grandma, it’ll get cold if you don’t eat."

The old madam gave an embarrassed grunt of acknowledgement and slowly began to eat from the bowl.

Meanwhile, Bao’er was still struggling in Gu Sanlang’s grip. Gu Sanlang simply lifted him up, walked over to Ms. Qian, and tossed Bao’er in front of her. "Auntie, your Bao’er dares to snatch food right out of Grandma’s mouth. What’s he going to be like when he grows up? I’m afraid you can forget about him being filial and taking care of you."

Bao’er clung tightly to Ms. Qian’s leg. He was a little afraid of Gu Sanlang. Gu Sanlang was tall and solidly built, and he had seen him get into a fight once, knocking a man down with a single punch from his bowl-sized fist.

Nearby, the village chief shook his head. While eating his coarse grain porridge, he said to Gu Zhong, "Young Zhong, it’s not my place to say, but you really need to get that boy of yours under control. No other family’s child behaves like that."

Gu Zhong looked deeply embarrassed. "The boy... he’s usually fine. It’s just that being out here... he’s not used to any of it."

The village chief gave a meaningful smile. "The fear is that he’ll still be like this even after he gets used to it."

"You raise a son to provide for you in your old age, not to become his servant."

He took a sip of his porridge and added, "Don’t think I’m being nosy. I’m saying this for your own good."

"If he keeps on like this, just think about it. Will you really be able to rely on him in the future?"
