Chapter 60: Chapter 60: A Lively Meal

Her aunt took the steamed bun and smiled. "Little Fei, you’re so thoughtful."

Gu Fei’s face turned beet red as she ran off.

’Trading a steamed bun for rabbit meat... was that going too far?’

’Well, there was still the meat soup, right? Her aunt wasn’t getting such a bad deal.’

Mrs. Chen sent a few of the children to deliver meat soup to each household.

Then she placed the pickled vegetables, meat soup, a half-bowl of smoked rabbit meat, and the stir-fried wild vegetables on a wooden plank propped up by an inn’s bench, calling everyone over to eat.

Li Chunhua ladled bowl after bowl of white rice into everyone’s hands. Uncle Ma held his bowl and chuckled, "This is the life! If only we had two taels of wine, it would be absolutely perfect."

Gu Fei’s eyes lit up; she remembered she had wine in her pocket dimension. Just as she was about to get it, Mrs. Chen suddenly shot her a look. Gu Fei froze. ’That’s right, Uncle Ma is an outsider. I have to be careful.’

Just as the family was about to eat, they heard Ms. Qian’s voice from nearby. "Mother, Second Brother’s family has started eating. You’d better go on over."

The matriarch stared at Ms. Qian, her mouth hanging open, speechless.

Just moments ago, she had been helping Ms. Qian cook, and Ms. Qian hadn’t said a thing. But as soon as the food was ready, she couldn’t wait to shoo her away.

’How could she not understand? Ms. Qian was just trying to save a portion of food for her own family.’

Gu Rong’s family’s cooking area was right next to Ms. Qian’s. Hearing her words, Gu Rong scoffed. "First Sister-in-law, isn’t Mother staying with your family? Second Brother and I give you a hundred jin of grain plus one tael of silver each year—we already paid you at the start of the year. How is it she can’t even get a meal at your place?"

Of everyone in this family, she was the person he despised the most. Bar none.

Ms. Qian forced an awkward laugh. "I was only thinking of Mother’s well-being! We only have coarse grains, and I didn’t want her to feel slighted. Your second brother’s family, they’re eating white rice!"

Gu Rong sneered. "And I suppose Second Sister-in-law’s meat soup is just dog food to you!"

Ms. Qian’s face turned a shade of purple. "Third Brother, what is that supposed to mean?"

"It means exactly what it sounds like. Everyone here has eyes, so stop treating us like idiots!" Gu Rong said, turning away to ladle himself a bowl of cornmeal mush.

Ms. Qian was livid. "Third Brother, if you don’t make yourself clear right now, I’ll—"

Before she could finish, Gu Zhong cut her off with a roar. "Enough! Just eat! You’re the only one causing a scene all day long. Look around! Does any other woman act like you?"

Having been publicly humiliated and angered twice in one day, Ms. Qian finally erupted. She grabbed Gu Zhong and started hitting him, screaming, "You useless man! If you’re so capable, then go earn enough money for your family to eat white rice! All you know how to do is take it out on me!"

Gu Zhong fought back, cursing, "You shrew! I must have been cursed for eight lifetimes to end up marrying you!"

The matriarch’s face was ashen. No mother could be happy watching her daughter-in-law beat her son.

She roared, "Ms. Qian, you disgraceful creature! Have you gone completely mad? How dare you strike your own husband!"

It was only then that Ms. Qian suddenly realized this wasn’t the privacy of her own home—they were in public, and dozens of pairs of eyes were fixed on her!

She covered her face and began to sob.

Xing’er stood off to the side, her head bowed so low it almost touched her chest. ’Mother is making a fool of herself again!’

At this moment, Mrs. Chen quickly nudged Gu Fei. Gu Fei raised her voice, "Grandma, it’s time to eat! The food is getting cold."

Gu Zhang also shot Gu Sanlang a meaningful look. Gu Sanlang set down his rice bowl, walked over, and gently guided the matriarch back to their area.
