Chapter 56: Chapter 56: The Sky Has Darkened
The group rested for a bit, then continued onward.
Gu Fei, Little Cao, Lan Zhi, and the old lady were all squeezed into the carriage compartment.
Her stamina was completely depleted. She wouldn’t be able to walk any further without resting for an hour or two.
Gu Fei sat in the carriage, massaging Lan Zhi’s calves. The old lady watched them and let out a snort.
She remembered what Lan Zhi had said perfectly. ’It cost 1,800 taels of silver to buy this girl’s freedom, and Little Fei even pitched in 200 taels herself.
taels!
That’s enough to live on for years!
That girl must have a lot more silver stashed away, yet she only gave me a sheepskin coat!
I’m her own grandmother, yet she treats me worse than some fallen lady!
And another thing, we bought this Miss of the Marquis Mansion. Shouldn’t she be our family’s servant girl? Why is Little Fei serving her instead?
After all, Little Fei was family, while Lan Zhi was an outsider. The old lady was very clear on this distinction.
Unable to watch any longer, the old lady couldn’t help but complain, "This old body of mine is sore all over from sitting in this cart, and there’s no one to even give me a little massage."
Lan Zhi, ever perceptive, quickly offered, "Old Madam, where does it hurt? I can massage it for you."
The old lady snorted. "Everywhere hurts! This cart is so bumpy, I feel like my bones are about to fall apart!"
Lan Zhi immediately began massaging the old lady’s lower back with her small hands.
Little Cao then piped up in her small, childish voice, "Auntie, Little Cao will massage you too."
Little Cao’s hands were soft and weak, and their touch on Gu Fei’s leg only tickled. Gu Fei couldn’t help but giggle. "Little Cao, you can stop now—hee hee—Auntie will do it herself."
Gu Fei began to knead her own legs with all her strength. She knew very well that if she didn’t massage them hard, she probably wouldn’t be able to lift them by tomorrow.
After an hour of jolting in the cart, Gu Fei got out to walk again.
Lan Zhi got out as well. She was well aware of her current station. ’I can’t overstep my bounds,’ she thought. ’I can’t be riding in the cart while Little Fei is walking.’
Along the way, Uncle Ma had them rest twice more. But when the sky turned pitch-dark, he didn’t call a halt, instead urging them to keep moving forward.
The village chief sent his eldest son, Gu Jinsheng, to ask Uncle Ma, "Uncle Ma, my father wants to know how much further we have to go. The people are hungry, and the mules are exhausted."
Uncle Ma looked at the sky and shook his head. "We can’t rest yet. The group is moving too slowly. In my time, we could cover over a hundred li a day. We’ve been at it all day and have barely made fifty or sixty."
"We can’t camp in the open at night unless we have no other choice. There could be wolves. There’s an inn about ten li ahead; we’ll rest once we get there."
A dejected Gu Jinsheng went back to report to the village chief.
Bao’er had given out long ago and climbed back onto his sister’s back.
Gu Fei didn’t say anything. ’Bao’er is just a little kid, after all,’ she thought. ’He must be completely exhausted. At this point, even giving him candy wouldn’t get him to walk on his own.’
Luckily, the Gu Family had an empty cart. The women of the family, including Ms. Li, took turns resting on it for a bit before getting off to walk again. For now, they were all managing to hold on.
Gu Fei saw Ms. Qian gasping for breath, her mouth wide open as she painstakingly shuffled forward.
Along the way, she had glanced at the Gu Family’s mule cart several times. She probably wanted to get on and rest but was too proud to ask.
If it had been anyone else, Gu Fei would have invited her to rest on the cart, but Ms. Qian’s mouth was just too vicious, and Gu Fei wasn’t feeling that generous.
Soon, the sky was utterly dark.
