Chapter 53: Chapter 53: How Much Silver Was Taken?

Bao’er puffed his cheeks and glared fiercely at Gu Fei. After a long moment, he said, "If you trick me, you’re a puppy!"

Gu Fei nodded. "I promise I won’t trick you."

Bao’er turned and stomped away in a huff. "Fine, I’ll walk by myself! It’s no big deal!"

Xing’er pressed her lips together for a long moment before whispering to Gu Fei, "Thank you."

Gu Fei smiled and pulled Lan Zhi along. "Come on, let’s go. We still have a long way to go."

After walking for another hour, it was nearly noon. The cart in front stopped, and Uncle Ma called out, "Everyone, let’s rest for a bit! Eat some dry rations. We’ll set off again in half an hour."

At his shout, Lan Zhi collapsed onto the ground.

Gu Fei wasn’t in much better shape, but she forcefully pulled her up. "Go sit on the mule cart for a while. Eat something and lie down."

Lan Zhi’s eyes were red. "Little Fei, I’m afraid I won’t make it to the south. It’s only the first day, and I already feel like I’m going to die."

"It’s okay. It’s just hard at the beginning. You’ll get used to it."

Gu Fei pulled Lan Zhi over to the cart. Just then, the old madam was being helped down from the cart by Gu Erlang.

The old madam’s face was scrunched up in a grimace. "This was all Second Son’s terrible idea! Fleeing a famine? It’s not like we didn’t have food at home."

"These old bones of mine are about to be rattled to pieces."

Just then, Bao’er ran over, held out his hand to Gu Fei, and demanded, "Give me candy."

Gu Fei didn’t say a word. She took out a piece of candy and put it in Bao’er’s hand, then pulled Lan Zhi onto the cart. Lowering the curtain flap, Gu Fei handed her a steamed bun. "Eat this quickly. Don’t let anyone see."

Lan Zhi ate, tears streaming down her face.

Her tears dripped onto the steamed bun, giving it a salty taste.

’To think that I, a young lady from a wealthy family, would fall to such a state overnight.’

Gu Fei gnawed on her steamed bun, lifting a corner of the curtain. She saw Mrs. Chen holding a package and distributing white flour cakes to the family.

She gave two to Uncle Ma, and the old madam also got one.

At that moment, Ms. Qian came over. Seeing the white flour cakes, she shrieked, "Sister-in-law, just how much silver did your family squeeze out of the Marquis Mansion? You can even afford white flour cakes?" Everyone who was resting looked over.

Their gazes flickered, each with a different expression.

Uncle Ma, in particular, pricked up his ears.

Mrs. Chen’s expression changed abruptly. "Sister-in-law, you’d better stop your nonsense! What does my family eating white flour cakes have to do with the Marquis Mansion!"

Ms. Qian sneered, "What do you mean, no relation? These white flour cakes, this mule cart—we only have them because Little Fei came back. You dare say it wasn’t from silver Little Fei gave you?"

"And where did Little Fei’s silver come from?"

Gu Fei flung open the curtain and jumped off the cart, staring daggers at Ms. Qian. "Aunt, do you have any idea what you’re saying? If the government found out about these wild accusations, our whole family would be beheaded! Are you trying to get our entire family killed?"

Ms. Qian snorted coldly. "What’s it to me? So you’re allowed to do it, but I’m not allowed to talk about it?"

Gu Fei stared at Ms. Qian and said, word by word, "I’m telling you, the cakes my family is eating, and this mule cart, have absolutely nothing to do with the Marquis Mansion."

"If you dare to spout any more nonsense, believe it or not, I’ll tear your mouth apart."

Ms. Qian’s voice became shrill. "Go on, tear it! I’ll stand right here and let you! You just try and lay a single finger on me!"

Gu Fei’s gaze turned cold. She raised her arm and viciously slapped Ms. Qian across the face.

Gu Fei didn’t hold back with this slap; she used her full strength.

’Some people, if you don’t beat the fear into them, will never learn their place.’
