Gu Qing’s hands trembled as he tucked the silver note into his robes.

"Where did you country bumpkins come from? I told you to get lost, didn’t you hear me?" Before Gu Zhang could get any closer, the servant shot out a hand and gave him a hard shove.

Gu Zhang had been standing on the steps, and the push sent him staggering backward.

Gu Fei frantically reached out to catch him, but she was injured and not as nimble as she used to be. She missed, and Gu Zhang tumbled down the steps.

"Dad—" Gu Fei rushed down and helped Gu Zhang sit up. She saw a gash on his forehead, which was already bleeding.

"Dad, are you all right?" Gu Fei said, anxiously looking Gu Zhang over, wondering if he had broken any bones.

"I’m fine," Gu Zhang gasped, slowly getting to his feet with Gu Fei’s support.

Gu Fei pulled out a handkerchief and pressed it to Gu Zhang’s forehead. She turned and said furiously to the servant, "You! How can you be so unreasonable? If you won’t let us in, fine, but why did you have to hit him!"

The servant sneered. "Country bumpkin, so what if I hit him? Even if I beat him to death, it would be for nothing. What are you going to do, report me?"

Just then, a man who looked like a steward came out of the entrance. "What’s all this? What’s with all the racket?"

The servant’s demeanor instantly became respectful. He bowed and said, "Steward Liu, a couple of country bumpkins showed up, snooping around. They look like trouble."

Steward Liu glanced at Gu Fei and her father. "Get rid of them. What a disgrace, having such riffraff standing at the gate!" With that, he turned and went back inside.

The servant bowed respectfully. "Yes, sir."

The moment Steward Liu’s figure disappeared, the servant straightened up, rushed down the steps in a few strides, and aimed a kick at Gu Zhang’s chest. "Get lost—"

Horrified, Gu Fei quickly pulled Gu Zhang aside.

The servant’s kick missed its target, causing him to lose his balance. He staggered forward two steps and nearly fell.

A few passersby laughed.
