Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Young Aunt is a Little Fairy
Gu Sanlang stared longingly at the two remaining slices on the table. "I’ll take one to my sister, and leave the other for Dad."
Mrs. Chen said nothing. Sanlang carefully took a slice and went into the inner room.
Entering the inner room, Sanlang saw his sister holding something she was about to throw away. When she saw him come in, Gu Fei smiled. "Sanlang, can you throw this out for me?"
Gu Sanlang was dumbfounded. "Throw it away? You’re not eating the rest?"
Gu Fei nodded. "Yep, I finished the apple. It’s just the core, what else would I do with it?"
Gu Sanlang took the apple core from Gu Fei’s hand and rushed out of the room. "You can’t eat the core of an apple!"
Everyone looked at him. ’What core?’
Little Cao looked at her third uncle and slowly spat a seed out of her mouth. "Third Uncle, are you saying we can’t eat this?"
Sanlang nodded emphatically and showed the apple core in his hand to everyone. "This is how Sister eats it!"
"Oh, there’s still flesh on it!" Mrs. Chen exclaimed, looking at the apple core in Sanlang’s hand, her eyes lighting up.
Sanlang quickly stuffed the slice he was holding into his mouth and mumbled, "Sister’s already eaten, so this one is mine."
Everyone glared at him.
Little Cao pouted. "Third Uncle, you ate two pieces all by yourself!"
"Exactly! Even if there was an extra piece, shouldn’t you have given it to Little Cao?" Er Lang said righteously.
"Heh heh, so delicious." His cheek bulging, Gu Sanlang quickly slipped away.
Gu Fei didn’t think much of it at first, but then she faintly heard the voices from the main room.
She felt both a pang of sadness and amusement.
’Historically speaking, it would be several hundred more years before apples were introduced to this country. Of course they wouldn’t know what this was.’
’Cutting one apple into eight slices... how pitiful.’
Gu Fei checked her space. There was only a pitifully small amount of fruit left: half a case of apples, half a case of pears, a few bunches of grapes, one watermelon, and only a handful of cherries.
’She had collected these from a fruit market right when the zombie apocalypse began.’
’Things like this were impossible to find after the zombie outbreak. I could never bear to eat them myself, only taking out a little to taste when I got a really bad craving.’
’It’s been several years, but thankfully, the space has a built-in preservation function. Things come out looking exactly as they did when they went in.’
After a moment’s thought, Gu Fei took out a bunch of grapes and called out loudly, "Mother—"
Mrs. Chen quickly pushed the door open and came in. "What is it? Do you need some water?"
Gu Fei shook her head and pointed to the grapes on the kang. "Mother, please wash these for everyone to share."
Mrs. Chen stared at the grapes. "Are these... grapes?"
Gu Fei nodded. "Close enough."
Mrs. Chen looked at Gu Fei, wanting to speak but hesitating. ’First an apple, and now grapes... where on earth is she getting all this stuff?’
’The girl was only wearing a single layer of clothes when she arrived!’
Mrs. Chen opened her mouth, then closed it without a word. She took the grapes and left.
A little while later, Mrs. Chen returned with the washed grapes. She first brought a small plate to Gu Fei before calling the rest of the family to eat.
Drawn by the call, Sanlang came over, his eyes shining as he looked at the grapes on the table. "Where did these come from?"
Mrs. Chen swatted him. "Just eat what you’re given. Why ask so many questions?"
Little Cao, nibbling on a grape, mumbled, "I know! They’re from Auntie. Auntie is a little Fairy, and she has lots of delicious things to eat."
Mrs. Chen started laughing. "Little Cao is right. Our Little Fei is a little Fairy."
"Mmm, and these grapes aren’t sour at all."
