"...."
Silence pervaded the entire space around Rey.
The outer disciple quarters were spartan but clean—small room with sleeping mat, basic furniture, and storage space for cultivation materials and personal possessions.
Rey sat cross-legged on the mat, his enhanced consciousness already working through the next phase of his infiltration objectives.
Primary mission: identify source of corruption spreading through junior disciples. Secondary objective: eliminate corruption without triggering a sect-wide crisis. Tertiary goal: reach Heaven's Gate City for extraction within the remaining timeframe.
He'd achieved the preliminary insertion successfully despite complications.
Now began the actual intelligence operation that would determine his examination performance evaluation.
A knock at the door interrupted his tactical planning.
Rey's enhanced perception identified the visitor before he opened the door—spiritual pressure suggesting Inner Disciple status, mystical signature carrying traces of True Realm Ether suppressed beneath the cultivation world framework.
Another Academy student deployed for an assessment examination.
He opened the door to find the last person he'd expected to encounter.
Darius Thornwick.
The noble student Rey was humiliated during their first Academy sparring session. The arrogant practitioner whose defeat had established Rey's reputation among his Academy peers.
Darius stood in the doorway wearing Inner Disciple robes that suggested he'd been deployed earlier and had already achieved significant sect status.
His expression carried satisfaction mixed with anticipation that transcended simple surprise at their reunion.
"Well, well," Darius stated with voice carrying barely contained glee. "Little Eru has finally arrived. Though I see you're calling yourself Lin Feng now. Clever cover identity for someone starting from the absolute bottom of the sect hierarchy."
Rey's tactical assessment crystallized immediately—Darius had been deployed as part of his own examination mission, had successfully infiltrated the sect at a higher position, and now recognized an opportunity for revenge against the Nephilim who'd embarrassed him publicly.
"Darius," Rey acknowledged with a neutral tone that concealed his internal calculation of threat levels. "I didn't realize you were deployed to the same location."
Darius's smile widened with expression mixing cruelty and satisfaction.
"The administrators don't coordinate deployment locations to prevent exactly this kind of encounter. But fate has delivered a wonderful opportunity I don't intend to waste."
He stepped into Rey's quarters without invitation, his superior sect rank providing implicit authority.
"You humiliated me in front of the entire combat class. Made me look incompetent despite my family connections and years of formal training. Every time someone references that defeat, my reputation suffers."
Darius's expression hardened with determination that suggested he'd been planning this confrontation since learning of Rey's deployment.
"But here, in this cultivation world, the hierarchy is reversed. I'm an established Inner Disciple with two months of sect integration providing me connections and authority. You're a newly accepted outer disciple with no backing, no resources, and no protection from senior disciples who might decide to make your life... difficult."
Rey maintained a calm exterior while his enhanced consciousness worked through tactical implications.
Darius possessed positional authority within the sect hierarchy that would allow him to obstruct Rey's mission objectives through legitimate channels. He could assign Rey disadvantageous tasks, block his access to resources, and spread rumors that would damage his reputation among other disciples.
All within bounds of normal sect operations, making counteraction difficult without exposing Rey's true capabilities or revealing his Church affiliation.
"What do you want?" Rey asked with directness that acknowledged the tactical reality.
Darius's smile carried genuine malice now.
"I want you to fail. Completely and utterly. Your mission objectives require infiltrating inner disciple ranks, investigating corruption, and maintaining a low profile that preserves your cover identity. I'm going to ensure you accomplish none of those goals."
He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper.
"Every step of your advancement will be blocked by obstacles I'll carefully position. Every investigation attempt will encounter resistance I'll organize. Every tactical advantage you try to leverage will be countered by institutional authority I've already established."
Darius straightened, his expression showing satisfaction at Rey's controlled lack of response.
"By the time evaluation period concludes, you'll have failed your assessment objectives completely. You'll spend several extra years at the Academy while I advance ahead of you. And everyone will know that the mysterious Nephilim who embarrassed me wasn't actually as capable as his lucky victories suggested."
He moved toward the door, pausing at threshold to deliver the final statement.
"Welcome to Crimson Peak Monastery, Eru. I'm going to make your life here absolutely miserable. And there's nothing you can do about it without exposing everything you're hiding."
The door closed, leaving Rey alone with a tactical problem that threatened his entire mission framework.
'This… is unexpected.'
Rey fell to his seat in silence after Darius departed. The situation was straightforward in its severity.
Darius possessed two months of sect integration that translated to established relationships, understood hierarchies, and institutional knowledge that Rey lacked entirely.
He held Inner Disciple status—a rank that commanded genuine deference from outer disciples and provided legitimate authority to assign tasks, control resource access, and influence how senior disciples perceived newcomers.
More critically, Darius knew Rey's true identity, his Academy affiliation, and his mission objectives.
That asymmetric intelligence advantage meant any countermove Rey attempted would be evaluated against an opponent who'd already anticipated the general categories of response available.
Rey began systematically working through options.
The most direct solution: eliminate Darius.
His enhanced consciousness retained combat knowledge that far exceeded what this suppressed body could currently execute, but the fundamental capability existed.
A carefully arranged accident, a nighttime encounter staged to appear as a demon beast attack, poison acquired through cultivation world's extensive herbal medicine infrastructure.
Rey discarded this option almost immediately.
Darius wasn't stupid.
His decision to confront Rey directly—announcing his intentions rather than simply acting on them—suggested sophisticated strategic thinking.
He'd told Rey exactly what he planned because he was confident Rey couldn't stop him through normal channels, and because any drastic response would create evidence trail pointing directly at the newly arrived outer disciple with obvious motive.
If Darius died within weeks of Rey's arrival after that confrontation, sect investigation would focus on Rey immediately.
Inner Disciples received serious attention when they died mysteriously.
The resulting scrutiny would expose Rey and everything he'd worked to conceal. Thus, assassination was a trap Darius had deliberately set by announcing his intentions.
Second option: strike first to sabotage Darius's own mission objectives.
Rey didn't know Darius's specific assignment, but general parameters were predictable—establish deeper sect infiltration, gather intelligence about cultivation world power structures, and demonstrate assessment excellence through successful objective completion.
Disrupting his mission would require understanding his specific objectives, which Rey currently lacked.
Blind interference might cause collateral damage that harmed Rey's own mission without meaningfully affecting Darius. And again, any obvious sabotage attempt against an Inner Disciple would be traced back to the outer disciple with clear motive.
Darius was almost certainly anticipating aggressive counter-response.
His confrontational approach suggested he wanted to provoke Rey into reactive action—creating justification for institutional retaliation that would appear legitimate rather than petty revenge.
'He came to me first,' Rey recognized with cold clarity. 'That's deliberate. If I react harshly and he responds through sect authority, he looks like the wronged senior disciple defending institutional hierarchy against insubordinate newcomers.'
Third option: appeal to Church authorities monitoring the assessment.
Rey rejected this immediately.
Using extraction talisman or attempting to communicate with Academy observers would constitute admission of mission failure.
The Church observers were watching to evaluate performance, not intervene in interpersonal conflicts between their own students.
They expected Rey to handle this obstacle independently.
Fourth option: ignore Darius and attempt mission objectives through brute force efficiency.
Also rejected.
Without protective relationships within the sect hierarchy, Darius had too many legitimate mechanisms to obstruct Rey's every movement.
Assigned to punishment tasks that kept him away from relevant areas.
Denied access to sect library sections containing information about corruption sources.
Reputation management among senior disciples who controlled access to resources Rey needed.
Every approach that involved directly confronting or working around Darius as an obstacle led to the same conclusion: the disadvantage was too structural to overcome through tactical cleverness alone.
Rey's analysis finally converged on the single viable approach.
He needed a patron.
Not a peer relationship, not a cooperative alliance with other outer disciples, but genuine protection from someone operating at Darius's level or above.
Inner Disciple or higher who had reasons to value Rey's capabilities and would provide an institutional umbrella that neutralized Darius's positional advantages.
This was the fundamental insight that made every other option viable or impossible.
A cultivation sect hierarchy operated through patronage networks where senior disciples sponsored promising juniors in exchange for loyalty, information, and reflected prestige when their sponsored disciples performed exceptionally.
Darius had spent two months building his own network. His Inner Disciple status meant he likely had senior Inner Disciples or possibly Core Disciples who recognized his value.
Rey needed equivalent protection within a different network—a patron who had reasons to shield him from Darius's institutional harassment while Rey pursued his actual mission objectives.
The calculus was clean once the conclusion crystallized.
'If I can identify and attach myself to a senior disciple whose interests align with protecting me, Darius loses his leverage entirely.'
The challenge was time.
Darius had two months of established relationships. Rey had arrived today, injured and carrying trauma that reduced his immediate operational effectiveness.
Building a patronage relationship from zero against opposition that would actively work to prevent it required both speed and exceptional first impression.
But that was a solvable problem rather than an impossible obstacle.
Rey's enhanced consciousness, tactical knowledge, and carefully calibrated display of exceptional spiritual roots during the examination had already attracted administrative attention.
That attention was the foundation he could leverage.
He had to find his patron… before Darius could close that window.
