Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Everything That Woke While He Slept

Alex did not know, as he slept, that Kethros Darkbane had returned to his forge and immediately sent runners to every member of his team with instructions to arrive within the hour.

He did not know that the Darkbane forging house was currently lit from within by furnace-glow, and that Kethros was standing in front of his two best apprentices with the designs spread on the worktable between them, explaining, with barely contained energy, what they were going to spend the next two days building.

He did not know that the construction crew Zara had sourced, she had moved fast, as she did everything, was already at the tree line at the back of the palace, working through the third paper by torchlight, the site supervisor walking the space with a measuring rod and a slightly overwhelmed expression that was rapidly converting into engaged professionalism.

He did not know that in the east wing of the same palace, a very long distance by corridor but not by implication, Valeriana Bloodworth was sitting in a room that was the precise inverse of Vespera’s aesthetic, red where Vespera used black, elaborate where Vespera used clean, and reading the same announcement she had read three times already, and that her expression had not changed during any of the three readings.

Red hair.

Red eyes.

The specific beauty of something that had learned, very early, to weaponise the way it looked.

She held the announcement paper in one hand and said nothing.

Beside her, her son, around the same age as Eclipse, wide-shouldered and red-eyed and wearing his resentment the way other people wore rings, permanently and as a statement, looked at his mother with the question he hadn’t asked yet.

She set the paper down.

"Leave me," she said.

He left.

She looked at the paper.

She did not reach for anger.

Anger was useful in specific doses and she had learned long ago not to waste it on moments that required thought.

What she reached for instead was the same thing she always reached for when the Abyss name became relevant to her interests.

Calculation.

A five year old had formed a Mana Core.

In the same palace where she lived.

In the household of the woman she had spent decades finding ways to manage.

She reached for her writing materials.

She had letters to write.

Careful ones.

To people who did not know they were being written to for this reason.

She was nothing if not patient.

***

He did not know about any of this.

He was asleep.

And while he slept, the continent continued its rearrangement.

The Aeonian envoys had reached the Winterfang border and received their answer there, a very clean, very formal message from the palace, delivered by a soldier who looked like he had been selected specifically for his capacity to be polite while being immovable.

The envoys were not permitted entry.

The soldier was pleasant about it.

The envoys were not.

The word *killed on sight* had a specific way of landing on people who had been expecting a diplomatic inconvenience and encountered a declaration of intent.

They turned back, fuming.

They began the journey to Vectoria.

They were not the only ones.

Three separate convoys were now moving toward the Imperial capital, each from a different direction, each carrying the same fundamental question dressed in different political clothing.

And at Vectoria, a King who had left his palace before midday was already managing the first stage of what was coming, with the seven hundred years of practice that made him exactly the right person to be there.

In the north, beyond the map’s edges, the Night Order maintained its silence, as it always did.

In the valley that wasn’t on any map, the lake sat in its impossible colours and the fog breathed on its surface and the trees drifted their bioluminescent light in air that had no wind.

And somewhere between that valley and Winterfang, a dark purple haired woman with pink eyes was moving with the specific purposeful pace of someone who had a clear destination and clear instructions and no particular interest in the scenery.

*Watch him.*

Two words.

The weight of the world in two words.

Alex slept through all of it.

In the morning, there would be weapons to commission and construction to check and training hall students to begin the long work of understanding.

There would be shadow element practice and mana sensing sessions and the slow patient work of building something that could bear the weight of what was coming.

But tonight he slept.

And the continent, which had not asked his permission before rearranging itself around him, kept right on rearranging.
