Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Fenrir

The barrier pulsed.

Not from outside, from within.

Something moving through Alessio’s soundproof veil and Vespera’s shadow layer with the casual ease of something that had simply decided those were not obstacles that applied to it.

Alex turned toward the wall.

The thing that came through it, not the door, the wall, passing through shadow and stone the way very old things passed through things that were merely physical, was a wolf.

That was the correct word.

Wolf.

Four legs.

Fur.

The general architecture.

The scale required a separate acknowledgement.

It was black.

Not dark grey, not charcoal, black, the specific black of a sky with no stars in it, the kind of colour that didn’t reflect light so much as absorb the idea of it.

It moved through the room with the unhurried certainty of something that had never once in its existence been required to make itself smaller for anyone’s comfort.

The ceiling cleared its back by perhaps two feet.

The doorframe it had bypassed would not have fit it.

Each step landed with a weight Alex could feel through the mattress and the floor beneath.

Its eyes were amber.

Not warm amber.

Not the amber of firelight or autumn.

The amber of something ancient that had watched enough of the world pass by that very little of it still required a reaction.

It looked at the room.

It looked at Alex.

Alex looked back.

Alessio, standing against the wall in his violet robes, silver at his throat and his brow, the faint old marks on his face that suggested this man had been in enough to carry the evidence of it, looked at his wolf with the expression of a man who had been managing one significant problem and had now received a second one without requesting it.

A single beat of private resignation.

"Fenrir," he said.

The wolf’s ears moved.

Acknowledgement without submission.

The specific response of something that had heard its name and was choosing, deliberately, whether the context warranted engagement.

It decided the context did not warrant engagement with Alessio.

It turned toward Eclipse.

Eclipse’s face did something Alex had never seen it do, it went completely, entirely, unguardedly young.

"Fenrir!"

She was across the room before the word finished leaving her mouth, both hands buried in black fur at the wolf’s neck, talking in the rapid specific register people reserved for animals they had missed more than they’d admitted.

"You’re healed ? you look completely healed ! are you completely healed ? you look incredible actually—"

The wolf made a low sound, somewhere between a rumble and something that carried the shape of meaning without being language.

"He’s been fully healed for three weeks," Alessio said.

Eclipse’s head snapped toward him. "Three weeks."

"I was going to mention it..."

"Three weeks, father—"

Vespera had moved to Fenrir’s other side, one hand resting against his broad black skull, and the wolf turned into it, slowly, with the complete dignity of something large enough that leaning into a hand was a choice, not a reflex.

His amber eyes dropped halfway closed.

The sound that came out of him was felt more than heard.

A sustained, deep thing.

Contentment expressed at a scale that made the floor resonate faintly.

"Hello," Vespera said quietly, and there was a warmth in it that Alex recognised, the warmth of something long and shared, too established to need words around it.

Fenrir’s tail moved once.

Slow.

Then he turned.

Toward Alex.

Alex, who had been watching from the bed with an expression he was maintaining at some effort, found himself the subject of those amber eyes at close range.

Very close range.

The wolf padded toward him, deliberate, unhurried, each step its own event, and stopped at the edge of the bed.

His head was level with Alex’s chest.

He regarded the five year old with the thorough, patient attention of something conducting a proper assessment before rendering a verdict.

Alex regarded him back.

He was, in approximately honest terms, sixty percent trying not to show that this was the largest living thing he had ever been this close to, and forty percent looking at the wolf’s broad black back, level, wide, the ideal riding surface for a child of his current dimensions, and doing arithmetic.

’I am five years old,’ he thought.

’He is larger than a carriage. The geometry of this is extremely compelling and I am not going to say that out loud.’

Fenrir’s nose moved forward.

Slow and deliberate.

The approach of something that intended to know exactly what it was dealing with before deciding anything.

It touched Alex’s chest.

Pulled back.

The amber eyes regarded him.

Then, with the gravity of a considered decision, Fenrir put both front paws on the bed.

The bed made a noise.

It held, barely.

Alex had one second to register the situation before Fenrir lowered his enormous black head and nudged him directly in the stomach.

Alex went sideways.

Fenrir nudged him again.

"Is he—"

The tongue came out.

It covered half of Alex’s face in a single pass.

Alex made a sound that was entirely undignified and that he would be processing later in private.

Fenrir, apparently identifying this as the correct outcome, did it again.

"He likes you," Eclipse said, in the voice of someone not trying to laugh and not succeeding.

Fenrir nosed at Alex’s stomach, a gesture that at this scale was a full body event, and Alex, who had been attempting composure, gave it up and started laughing.

The real kind.

The helpless kind.

The kind that happened when something was moving faster than dignity could manage.

Fenrir’s tail started moving.

He did it again.

From across the room Eclipse was laughing openly now, the sound of it bright and unguarded.

Vespera was smiling, not the court smile, the real one, the rare one that Alex had only seen in unguarded moments and had catalogued carefully precisely because of its rarity.

Alessio, against the wall, violet robes, silver crown, the quiet marks of old things on his face, had an expression that was not quite a smile and was not trying to be.

Something quieter.

Something with no performance in it.

The candles burned warm.

The room held all four of them in a moment that had no weight in it, no politics, no threat, no shape of everything that was coming.

Just a black wolf who had decided a small boy was worth his attention, and a family being, without agenda, a family.

Alex lay back against the pillows, one hand somewhere in black fur without having entirely decided to put it there.

Vespera let it breathe as long as it deserved.

Then she straightened.

"I’ll begin preparations for the shadow bond," she said.

"The candidate is ready?" Alessio asked.

"She has been." Vespera’s eyes moved to Alex, brief and certain. "This is the right moment."

Eclipse looked up from Fenrir’s fur. "And tonight’s disturbance? What do we tell people?"

Alessio and Vespera exchanged the look, the married kind, fast and complete.

"The shadow bond," Alessio said.

"The formation process produces mana disturbances. It’s documented. It’s unremarkable for the Abyss family." A beat.

"We say the bond formation triggered the alarm. That Alex’s awakening was incidental to the process, not the cause of it."

Eclipse was quiet for a moment, turning it over with the look of someone checking a structure for weak points. "That’s actually clean," she said.

"It’s close enough to true to hold up, the bond formation does cause disturbances, the timing works, and if anyone ever investigates they get a complete and thoroughly boring answer, which is exactly what we want, because nobody looks twice at boring."

"That explains the timing," Vespera said.

"The disturbance, the alarm, all of it attributed to something we control the narrative of." She looked at her husband. "You’ll arrange the documentation?"

"By morning."

She nodded once.

"Then that’s what happened tonight," she said.

"The shadow bond formation began and there was an unusually large disturbance because he awakened in the process." She looked at Alex.

"It’s clean, attributable and unremarkable."

Alex looked at his parents, coordinating with the smooth, unhurried efficiency of two people who had navigated enough difficult things together that the process had become effortless.

’I have,’ he thought with complete sincerity, ’extremely competent parents.’

Fenrir licked him again.
