Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Who Told You Luna Was Driven Away by Jay?
Jane Lancaster’s joy was short-lived; her face fell again.
Pauline Shaw had contributed 8 points of disgust, but Caleb Lowell’s favorability had actually gone up by 1 point!
It instantly made her feel like all her effort had been for nothing!
’How did he manage to pin the blame so precisely on Luna Morgan? I was only trying to mess with Pauline Shaw!’
’I wasn’t counting on you to help, but you could at least not hold me back!’
She glanced at Pauline Shaw again. ’And you... if you had just shown them the video last night, none of this would have happened.’
Pauline Shaw’s heart froze. ’She knows about the video?’
Only then did Caleb Lowell notice his cousin’s presence.
"What is wrong with you? Jay is in poor health, yet you let someone just push her?"
The reason he had rushed here was a message from Pauline Shaw. He hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but now, her intentions seemed suspicious.
Pauline Shaw’s heart sank. She had seen Jane Lancaster show up at Luna Morgan’s hospital room and worried Jane would do something to harm Luna.
That was why she had messaged Caleb Lowell, hoping her cousin would see the situation for what it was and not be deceived.
"What kind of shady friends have you been making? Who was that man who pushed Jay?" Caleb Lowell demanded harshly.
Pauline Shaw’s heart dropped. She didn’t want to expose Gordon Dawson to her family.
"Caleb, please don’t be like this. He didn’t do it on purpose..."
"Who was it?" Caleb Lowell pressed, his voice stern.
Pauline Shaw stubbornly pressed her lips together, refusing to say.
"Zion, just let it go. It’s a minor injury. If you keep this up, Pauline won’t be able to make any friends," Jane Lancaster suddenly said, breaking the stalemate.
Pauline Shaw stared at her in astonishment. ’She’s being this nice?’
"How is this a minor injury? That person has to apologize!" Caleb Lowell looked at Pauline Shaw. "Don’t associate with classless people like that in the future!"
Jane Lancaster said, "I’m really fine! Besides, he’s a top student from Stratton University, not some classless person. I’m sure he’ll apologize to me in person."
’Classless? That’s called having ’personality.’ Your cousin is totally into it, you know?’
’He smokes, he drinks, he’s hot-tempered, and he has violent tendencies. But so what? In your cousin’s eyes, that’s just charming!’
’Some people are just like that. The more you oppose it, the more they want it. Even if it’s a pile of shit, they still have to taste it to see how salty it is.’
’If you just ignore it, she might even get bored of it herself.’
Pauline Shaw’s face instantly darkened.
"Pauline, am I right?" Jane Lancaster asked, looking over with a beaming smile.
’What are you doing? I’m throwing you a lifeline here, you should be grabbing it.’
’I’m not going to expose that guy Dawson. If you guys start guarding against him now, how is he supposed to use the Shaw family as a stepping stone to become a new business tycoon?’
Pauline Shaw gritted her back teeth and slowly nodded.
She finally understood. Jane Lancaster wasn’t genuinely helping her, she was just trying to control her.
And the reason, she feared, was that video she had.
Caleb Lowell’s brow furrowed. Use the Shaw family as a stepping stone to become a new business tycoon? It seemed he needed to investigate this person.
Jane Lancaster then said, "Zion, shouldn’t you apologize to Luna, then? You were too harsh just now!"
Luna Morgan’s breath hitched. She quickly waved her hands. "No, no, it’s fine..."
But Caleb Lowell had no intention of apologizing.
"Jay, I’ll take you to get that wound treated." He supported Jane Lancaster with such complete focus it was as if he couldn’t see anyone else.
He paused, then shot a cold glance at Pauline Shaw. "Aren’t you going to come help support Jay?"
Pauline Shaw didn’t think Jane Lancaster’s injury was a big deal at all. ’How could a tough woman who used to be able to beat down three or four thugs possibly be some delicate little flower?’
Jane Lancaster could fool her cousin, but she couldn’t fool her.
But ultimately, she didn’t dare defy her cousin.
Pauline Shaw went over to support Jane Lancaster. Her eyes were sharp, and she immediately spotted several doctors passing in the hallway—they were the hospital’s top team.
"Dr. Sheffield, Jay is injured. Could we trouble you to take a look at her?"
As soon as she spoke, the group did indeed stop.
"Miss Lancaster?" The person recognized them.
Claire Sheffield asked, "Miss Lancaster, are you feeling unwell somewhere?"
Jane Lancaster smiled. "I’m fine, Dr. Sheffield."
The group was in a hurry, and it was clear they had important business to attend to. How could she bother them with such a minor injury?
But today, Pauline Shaw was being overly concerned. "Dr. Sheffield, Jay was pushed today and has a bruise on her arm. Do you think you should help check it out?"
A nurse standing nearby looked utterly exasperated. ’A minor soft tissue contusion. Is it really worth making such a fuss?’
However, while Dr. Sheffield seemed gentle, she was actually very principled. The woman was unlikely to get her way.
Just then, Jane Lancaster spoke up. "Dr. Sheffield, could I trouble you to take care of it?"
Pauline Shaw gave her a surprised look. ’She really has the nerve?’
"Yes, of course," Claire Sheffield agreed, much to everyone’s surprise.
—
The hospital room suddenly fell silent.
Luna Morgan felt a hollow ache in her chest. Her gaze swept over her exposed arm, which was covered in purple bruises and scrapes.
"Making such a fuss over a tiny scratch like that. You’re injured this badly, and I haven’t heard a peep out of you," a voice said, full of indignation.
Startled, Luna Morgan looked up to see a nurse who had entered the room at some point.
She shook her head in disapproval. "Please don’t talk about Miss Lancaster like that. She’s the daughter of a wealthy family, pampered since birth. How could a rough-and-tumble person like me compare?"
"So what if she’s rich? You were working part-time to support yourself back in high school, while she only knows how to use some young master’s credit card! Other than winning the birth lottery, what part of her is better than you?"
Outside the hospital room, two figures stood silently.
Mrs. Everett, holding a food container, said, "Second Young Master, that nurse is slandering the young miss. Should I go have a word..."
"No need. She’s just saying a few words offhand. No need to blow it out of proportion."
"You’re so kind-hearted, Young Master. If it were the young miss, she would definitely..." Mrs. Everett paused, then added, "Perhaps it’s because you suffered so much as a child that you can empathize with ordinary people."
Alvin Lancaster’s expression flickered.
Back when the Lancaster family fell from grace, their father sold many assets to pay off debts, but it still wasn’t enough. He had no choice but to send his three sons to the countryside, while keeping only his youngest daughter in the city.
In his memory, the nights in the countryside were cold and dark, so long they felt endless.
His younger brother was so little, he would often wake up in the middle of the night crying from hunger. Alvin couldn’t console him; all he could do was hope that when daybreak came, their father would have someone send money so they could buy food. Once his brother had a full stomach, he would stop crying.
The only one in the Lancaster family who never suffered any hardship was Jane Lancaster.
Even when the family was at its lowest point, she always had beautiful princess dresses to wear.
Alvin Lancaster’s feelings were complex. He looked up and asked in confusion, "Mrs. Everett, why do you keep staring at me?"
Mrs. Everett’s eyes were slightly red. "It’s nothing. I’m just a little sad, is all. I’m afraid I won’t be able to take care of you anymore, Second Young Master."
Alvin Lancaster froze. "What do you mean by that?"
Mrs. Everett shook her head, refusing to say more.
Alvin Lancaster grew anxious. "Just tell me!"
Only then did Mrs. Everett confess, "The young miss... I’m afraid she won’t let me stay in the Lancaster family home any longer."
She didn’t say more; less was more. In any case, Jane Lancaster had a history. Alvin Lancaster would surely be filled with righteous indignation.
"Why would you think that? Jay isn’t that kind of person," Alvin Lancaster said with a frown.
Mrs. Everett was very surprised. ’Could it be that he doesn’t know about the recent rumors?’ she thought.
She decided to press harder. "But the young miss even drove Miss Morgan away. And last night, she said she was going to settle accounts with me. I’m just worried..."
"Who told you that?" Alvin Lancaster suddenly grew angry. "Who told you Jay drove Luna away? That’s not what happened at all! That was Mama Knight acting on her own. Jay knew nothing about it!"
