Chapter 6: Chapter 6: You Investigated Me?

"Miss Morgan, someone sent a delivery for you."

When the nurse walked in carrying bouquets and gift boxes, Luna Morgan was on an IV drip, tapping away at her laptop.

"Don’t forget you’re still a patient. You should get some rest," the nurse reminded her.

Luna Morgan might not have been well-known among the doctors at Aethelan Hospital, but she was famous among the nurses and orderlies.

To repay a debt of gratitude, she often came to the hospital to learn massage techniques and how to care for patients in a vegetative state. Many of the nurses and orderlies had been approached by her for advice.

The young woman had a determined spirit, was kind-hearted and polite, and everyone was very fond of her.

Luna Morgan looked up and was stunned. "...Who sent all this? I can’t accept it!"

All sorts of high-end gifts were piled on the table, a dazzling array.

The nurse smiled. "I asked the delivery person. He said the one who signed for it was the eldest young master of the Lancaster family."

A look of confusion crossed Luna Morgan’s face. "The eldest young master?"

The nurse was still on her shift, so she left after dropping off the items.

"KNOCK, KNOCK." A rhythmic knock came from the door.

Luna Morgan looked up and called out, "Young Master..."

She trailed off, staring in surprise at the person who pushed the door open.

Jane Lancaster smiled and greeted her, "Luna, good morning. Are you feeling any better?"

Luna Morgan was completely overwhelmed. "Miss Lancaster, why are you here? I—"

She tried to get out of bed but was gently pushed back down by Jane Lancaster.

"You’re still on a drip. Just sit tight and don’t move."

Mama Knight brought over a chair so Jane Lancaster could sit by the bed, making it easier for them to talk.

It dawned on Luna Morgan. "Did you send all these things? No, I..."

"You can’t accept them, is that it?" Jane Lancaster looked at the gifts, feigning distress. "What should I do, then? You won’t forgive me."

"I was in the wrong last night. I took your good intentions for granted and didn’t realize you were so sick."

Luna Morgan froze. "I do forgive you... No, that’s not it. You’re my savior. You’ve done nothing to wrong me! I’m willing to do anything for you! Besides, it’s not like I was any help..."

She tried to explain, her words tumbling out incoherently.

Jane Lancaster let out a chuckle. "Then just accept them."

Her smile was so captivating that Luna Morgan’s breath caught in her throat, and the words of refusal were suddenly impossible to say.

Jane Lancaster said, "You treat me with such sincerity. I shouldn’t just stand by and let Caleb Lowell misunderstand you again and again. I’ll be sure to clear things up with him for you later."

Luna Morgan thought of the last phone call from the previous night, her hands on the blanket clenching unconsciously.

Jane Lancaster changed the subject. "But still, how can a grown man be so petty? He’s always ordering you around. He doesn’t even pay you a salary, what gives him the right?"

"That’s not it!" Luna Morgan reflexively retorted. "He’s not petty, he’s..."

Noticing Jane Lancaster’s questioning gaze, she bit her lip, and her eyes dimmed for a moment. "...He just loves you too much. That’s why he can’t forgive me."

For three years, she had done everything in her power to make it up to him, but no matter what she did, she couldn’t earn Caleb Lowell’s forgiveness.

Luna Morgan suppressed the bitterness rising in her heart and looked at Jane Lancaster earnestly. "Young Master Lowell... he really, really loves you."

The room fell silent for a moment.

Jane Lancaster said, "I’m not taking the blame for that."

’As if. The male lead is obviously falling for you and is just in denial. I’m just a cog in your little romantic drama, so leave me out of it.’

"What?" Luna Morgan thought she had misheard.

"Nothing." Jane Lancaster took out an apple and started peeling it.

’I almost let that slip. I forgot I’m here to stir up trouble.’

Luna Morgan said, "Miss Lancaster, let me peel that for you."

"No need." Jane Lancaster glanced at the fruit knife and quickly moved it away.

’I remember that in the book, the heroine is the type to get injured easily.’

’She’s not only abused by the male lead but also by all the villainesses. Her body is constantly covered in injuries, big and small.’

’She has to go through endless suffering before everyone can shower her with affection.’

Jane Lancaster worried that the temptation of thirty billion, stacked with the heroine’s debuff, would make her unable to resist stabbing the heroine. That would be a little hard to explain.

However, it was too late.

Luna Morgan moved too quickly, lurching forward and yanking on the IV stand with a CRASH. The needle was pulled out, and blood immediately started to well up on the back of her hand.

The door suddenly burst open. Someone rushed in and shoved Jane Lancaster aside. "What are you doing?"

Jane Lancaster stumbled into the bedside table and frowned. ’Who is this?’

The sharp CLACK of high heels on the floor followed as Pauline Shaw grabbed the man in the suit, her voice a mix of anger and urgency. "What are you doing in here? This has nothing to do with you!"

The man in the suit continued to glare fiercely at Jane Lancaster. "You dare hurt her?"

Jane Lancaster glanced down at the knife in her hand, which now had a drop of Luna Morgan’s blood on it. "..."

’What the hell? I haven’t even had a chance to do anything yet, have I?’

’Is this damn protagonist plot armor already kicking in? It’s terrifyingly effective.’

Luna Morgan clutched the back of her hand. "Senior, I did this to myself! It has nothing to do with Miss Lancaster!"

Pauline Shaw froze for a second before quickly recovering. "A misunderstanding! It’s all a misunderstanding!"

She gave the man in the suit a shove. "Alright, stop making things worse. Get out of here!"

Mama Knight was having none of it. "Don’t you dare leave! Can you afford to compensate us if our young miss is hurt?"

She tried to block the man, but Pauline Shaw was clearly faster, quickly pushing him out the door.

Just then, the nurse arrived and blocked the way, so Mama Knight had to give up.

"Miss Pauline, what are you doing here?" Mama Knight asked suspiciously.

It was no wonder she was suspicious. For some time now, she hadn’t been able to get a hold of Pauline Shaw.

Right after the young miss had woken up, Miss Pauline had said that if the young miss ever felt bored, she could call her anytime.

But despite saying that, she gradually stopped visiting, and whenever Mama Knight called, she was either busy or had no time.

Yet here was this person who claimed to have no time, appearing in Luna Morgan’s hospital room.

"Are you here to visit Miss Morgan?" Mama Knight asked, thinking to herself that Miss Pauline had never liked Luna Morgan before.

Pauline Shaw glanced at Jane Lancaster, feeling a little guilty and vaguely annoyed. Mama Knight was just too meddlesome.

"I..."

"Mama Knight, don’t be silly. Pauline and Luna went to the same university. Of course she’s here to visit her," Jane Lancaster suddenly interjected.

She looked at the 39% favorability rating in front of her and couldn’t help but feel happy. ’Another starter experience pack!’

Pauline Shaw felt a wave of relief, but her heart leaped into her throat the very next second.

"Who was that just now? Why was he so worked up?" Jane Lancaster changed the subject.

"He’s..."

"He’s Luna’s colleague, here to visit her on behalf of their company," Pauline Shaw cut in to answer.

Luna Morgan gave her a slightly surprised look but was smart enough not to say anything.

"Jay, do you want an apple? Let me peel one for you," Pauline Shaw said, picking up an apple and starting to peel it to cover her nervousness.

Jane Lancaster grew thoughtful.

’Pauline Shaw tends to blink a lot when she’s nervous. Is there something off about that guy?’

’Wait a minute, that was Gordon Dawson, wasn’t it? Wow, looks like Pauline Shaw is already secretly keeping a boy toy!’

Pauline Shaw flinched, the knife in her hand slipped, and she sliced off a large chunk of the apple.

Jane Lancaster looked over.

’Her technique is terrible. But that’s okay. Gordon Dawson did say he’d peel apples for you for the rest of your life, after all.’

Pauline Shaw shot to her feet, her voice changing pitch. "Are you investigating me?"

Jane Lancaster blinked. "Investigating what?"

Luna Morgan also looked completely baffled. She tugged on the corner of Pauline Shaw’s shirt and whispered a reminder, "Pauline, don’t yell at Miss Lancaster like that."

She glanced at Jane Lancaster, a little worried.

’I hope Miss Lancaster doesn’t get angry because of this.’
