Chapter 58: Chapter 58: She Wouldn’t Dare Disobey Me
They were halfway there when Jane Lancaster’s phone buzzed a few times.
Someone had sent her a private message, the tone filled with concern.
Vincent Holt: [Congratulations on your recovery. I heard you’re coming with Julian to celebrate my grandma’s birthday today? Thanks for making the trip.]
Alvin Lancaster glanced at the message and said with a smile, "So Vincent knows how to show concern for people now."
He, Chloe Dave, and Caleb Lowell had been high school classmates. Vincent Holt was a year younger, but he had always liked to hang around Caleb.
Probably because he was young and the most spoiled at home, Vincent Holt had always been arrogant and a bit thoughtless.
Alvin Lancaster quickly looked away, not wanting to keep staring at his sister’s phone. It was impolite, after all.
Jane Lancaster smirked. ’Concerned? Unlikely.’
Sure enough, she replied with a simple "Thanks," and in the next second, he dropped all pretenses of politeness.
Vincent Holt: [Look, my cousin’s been out of town on business recently, so maybe he hasn’t had time to keep you in line, but shouldn’t you delete that post on your Moments?]
His grandmother was from the Lowell family. Although she was only Caleb Lowell’s grandaunt, they were extremely close.
When Caleb Lowell’s family went through a crisis in his childhood, all his relatives shirked responsibility. It was Vincent’s grandmother who couldn’t stand by and watch, so she brought Caleb to live with the Holt family.
All these years, Caleb had never forgotten that childhood kindness. He was indifferent to his other relatives, but he held Vincent’s grandmother in the highest regard.
He had even arranged for her to be the official witness at his engagement ceremony.
Therefore, he felt he had the right to discipline Jane Lancaster on Caleb’s behalf.
After sending the message, Vincent Holt gave Chloe Dave an "OK" sign.
’Dave is still too indirect, always worried about saving face for others. I’m different. I never have to give anyone face.’
Besides, wasn’t Jane Lancaster coming to the Holt family’s home to celebrate his grandma’s birthday just to suck up to the Lowell family’s relatives?
She used to be an expert at fawning over his family, visiting the Holts during every holiday with cloying enthusiasm.
"See? My words still carry weight. She wouldn’t dare disobey me," Vincent Holt said with a smile.
After all, his grandmother represented her future in-laws. Did Jane Lancaster really dare to cause trouble if she wanted to marry into the family?
Chloe Dave froze. ’So the problem that’s been bothering me for so long was really solved that easily?’
His phone pinged. Vincent Holt grinned and said, "Check her Moments. She definitely deleted it..."
The smile on his face froze. He stared at his phone in disbelief.
Jane Lancaster: [I shouldn’t, so I won’t.]
Vincent Holt snapped out of it. ’Did I not make myself clear enough?’
Vincent Holt: [My cousin is at a critical point in his career right now! Posting recklessly on your Moments like this and leaking details about his personal life will affect how investors see him, which will in turn affect the company’s stock price! A proper fiancée should be sensible and low-key. Do you understand that or not?]
Jane Lancaster said nothing. She simply opened a stock trading app, took a screenshot of the Holt Group’s candlestick chart, and sent it over.
What an unfortunate coincidence. The Holt family’s stock had been falling for the past six months. Their annual report was bound to be ugly.
’I don’t understand, but you seem to know so much. Is that because you’re speaking from experience?’
She didn’t even have to send any text. Vincent Holt was already about to lose his mind with rage.
He shot to his feet, furious. "No, I have to tell my grandma about this! This is outrageous! Does she even have any respect for the Holt family?"
Chloe Dave grabbed his arm, hesitating. "That’s not a good idea. Julian Lancaster is very protective of his own. Don’t make things unpleasant."
He recounted what had happened at the jewelry exhibition. The memory was still fresh in his mind; he had never witnessed something so unreasonable.
To this day, he was still unfairly branded with the stigma of having laid a hand on Jane Lancaster. Just thinking about it made him feel wronged.
Vincent Holt was shocked. "She slandered you like that, and you just took it, Dave?"
’This is lawless! She’s trying to walk all over us brothers.’
"I’m going to tell my cousin and let him see that woman’s true colors!" Vincent Holt snorted.
He refused to believe that Caleb Lowell would choose a woman over his friends and side with her against his brothers, disregarding their bond.
Chloe Dave hesitated for a moment, then sighed. "You can tell him if you want, but there’s something else you might want to mention to Zion at the same time."
The day he learned that the Lancaster family had sent Mrs. Everett to the back hills to grow vegetables, he had someone get in touch with her afterward.
At the time, Mrs. Everett had seemed terrified and refused to say anything.
He casually lied that Caleb Lowell had sent him, and only then did Mrs. Everett break down in tears, saying she had been forced.
Jane Lancaster had used a contract to force her to go to the back hills and grow vegetables. If she refused or told anyone about it, Jane would demand repayment of the extra salary she had been given.
She had worked hard for the Lancaster family for so many years, sending all her money back home for her daughter’s medical treatments. Where would she get that kind of money now?
Hundreds of thousands was nothing to a wealthy person, but it could crush an ordinary family.
What’s more, hers wasn’t just an ordinary family, but one that had fallen into poverty due to illness.
Chloe Dave had been shocked when he heard this. He had wanted to take Mrs. Everett away, but she refused to leave... She didn’t trust anyone now, saying she would only go if Caleb Lowell came for her himself.
After all, even Alvin Lancaster, with whom she had once been closest, had been heartless enough to abandon her in the back hills. She couldn’t bring herself to trust anyone else.
Chloe Dave sighed. "I haven’t told Zion about this yet. I was afraid it would affect his work, so I could only let Mrs. Everett continue to suffer."
"But Zion should be back soon."
Vincent Holt practically exploded with rage upon hearing the story.
Mrs. Everett was being targeted like this all because she had let Caleb Lowell hold Luna Morgan for a moment. In other words, Jane Lancaster was targeting Luna Morgan.
He knew Luna had always hoped Jane Lancaster would wake up, just so she could alleviate her own guilt.
Jane Lancaster did wake up, but Luna wasn’t happy about it. Instead, she became even busier and more haggard.
’So this is the real reason Luna is unhappy. She’s been bullied and hurt by Jane Lancaster all this time.’
The way she was torturing Mrs. Everett, it was obvious she was just acting out of female rivalry, unable to stand how popular Luna was.
He’d heard that people in vegetative states suffer from muscle atrophy. He could only imagine what a hideous sight Jane Lancaster must be now.
’Stratton’s number one socialite? More like she’s become a monster now, ugly on the outside and even uglier on the inside.’
’A crippled vegetable. What right does she have to keep clinging to his Zion?’
’Since she’s being so arrogant, I’ll teach her a lesson!’
’I’ll make her understand that ugly freaks should crawl back into their dark corners. Bullying pretty girls won’t get her anywhere.’
—
Even after provoking Vincent Holt into blocking her, Jane Lancaster attended the banquet with her expression unchanged.
Julian Lancaster led her and Alvin Lancaster to first wish the guest of honor a happy birthday.
When Old Mrs. Holt saw Julian Lancaster about to lead Jane Lancaster away, she quickly said, "Let Jane sit at our table."
Although it was a birthday banquet, it was still a social occasion, and the Holt family had separated the seating by gender.
Julian Lancaster had originally planned to introduce his sister to the various family friends and elders, but he gave up the idea considering her health was still fragile.
His sister shouldn’t overexert herself right now, and she certainly couldn’t drink. It would be good for her to just sit and chat with the old madam.
"Then you stay here. Alvin and I will go to the next table. Call me if you need anything," Julian Lancaster said in a gentle voice.
Jane Lancaster waved at him and, without any false modesty, sat down next to Old Mrs. Holt.
Old Mrs. Holt sized up Jane Lancaster. ’My grandson’s assessment seems a bit biased,’ she thought. ’Jane Lancaster might be crippled, but ugly? I don’t think so.’
’She’s just too thin. Doesn’t look like she has much good fortune ahead of her.’
