Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Some People Are So Indecent
This meal wasn’t cheap. Gordon Dawson had brought five or six people, and they had also ordered alcohol. The cost was already beyond what an ordinary person could afford.
The woman was just a junior manager at her company. As a wage earner, her salary was decent, but she was by no means rich.
Gordon Dawson scoffed. "If I say no, will you give up?"
The woman was speechless. Of course, she didn’t want to give up so easily. She had to at least try to see if she had a chance.
"How much was the meal? I’ll transfer you the money." Gordon Dawson stubbed out his cigarette.
Seeing the woman’s surprise, he couldn’t help but frown. "I never let a woman pay for my meal. Don’t read too much into it."
"No, it’s fine. I said I was treating you." She had already paid the bill, and she couldn’t bring herself to ask for the money back.
Gordon Dawson stuffed his hands in his pockets, a look of indifference on his face. "Suit yourself."
The woman couldn’t help but ask, "What is it about me that’s not good enough? Why do you dislike me so much?"
She really liked Gordon Dawson, finding his wild and untamable demeanor very attractive.
When they first met, her impression of him hadn’t been very good; she thought he was a bit disrespectful.
During an in-person meeting, just because she casually said "Thanks, dear," Gordon Dawson had suddenly turned hostile, snapping, "Who’s your dear?"
But a few days later, when her ex-boyfriend was harassing her on the street, it was Gordon Dawson who had rushed over and driven him away.
Seeing she was down, Gordon Dawson even took her to a nearby arcade... They had a great time playing, and her heart couldn’t help but flutter.
Not to mention, after that, Gordon Dawson often brought her coffee. He was so arrogant and curt with other women, yet he was uniquely attentive and considerate toward her.
It was hard for her not to read into it.
Gordon Dawson said, "There’s nothing wrong with you. It’s just that I’ve found someone better. Why should I choose you?"
The woman was devastated, unable to understand how his previous attentiveness and care had turned into today’s harsh words.
"Gordon Dawson!"
The woman heard footsteps. Seeing Pauline Shaw appear in the hallway, she felt as if all her questions had been answered. "Is it because of her?"
Pauline Shaw had heard from a friend who tipped her off, so she had dropped her work and rushed to the restaurant.
Seeing the woman pestering her boyfriend, she felt a pang of nervousness and walked over to Gordon Dawson’s side.
"Of course it’s because of her. Who else would it be?"
As he spoke, Gordon Dawson turned and wrapped his arm around Pauline Shaw’s waist. He shot the other woman a provocative glance, then leaned in and kissed her.
’Whoa, are these two always this dramatic?’ Jane Lancaster was shocked, but her vision suddenly went black.
Just as Gordon Dawson was pulling Pauline Shaw in by the waist, a hand reached out and firmly covered her eyes, blocking her view.
"Little ones shouldn’t watch this sort of thing; you’ll get a sty." Jasper Sterling couldn’t help but sigh.
’Some people are just so shameless. Pulling a stunt like this in a public place, right in front of everyone. Are we all just part of their little show?’
’Is this the trick Gordon Dawson used to win over Pauline Shaw? Good heavens, aren’t they afraid of being called a shameless couple?’ Jane Lancaster was still in shock.
It was mainly because she was too sheltered; she’d never seen anyone treat their audience with such little regard!
Pauline Shaw heard Jane Lancaster’s inner thoughts and hurriedly struggled to push Gordon Dawson away.
But with her messy hair and flushed face, her appearance was bound to stir people’s imaginations.
"Excuse me, I heard you were the one who paid the bill just now. How much was it? I’ll transfer you the money." Pauline Shaw tried her best not to look at Jane Lancaster, focusing on resolving the matter at hand first.
The woman’s eyes were hostile, and her voice was cold and hard. "No need. It’s not like I can’t afford a small amount like that."
’Did she deliberately bring up the bill to humiliate me for being broke and stingy?’
’No wonder Gordon Dawson said she was "better." This woman is such a green tea bitch!’
’I remember now. Later, after the Shaw Family went bankrupt, Pauline Shaw secretly looked for a job but was humiliated and given a hard time during an interview by a manager at some company.’
’That manager is this woman, isn’t she?’
Pauline Shaw frowned. ’There she goes again, spouting more sensational nonsense.’
’The Shaw Family bankrupt? The Shaws and the Lowells are connected by marriage. As long as my cousin is around, we would never be reduced to bankruptcy.’
"No, I insist on transferring you the money." Pauline Shaw didn’t want to become a joke in Jane Lancaster’s eyes.
’It was a small expense; it wasn’t as if she couldn’t afford it.’
Jasper Sterling looked at the two women at a standoff, then glanced at Gordon Dawson, who was watching from the sidelines with his arms crossed, and suddenly smiled.
"My apologies, that was just too fascinating. As a nosy bystander, I couldn’t help but watch a little longer."
"But I do have one question. Since you said you chose Miss Shaw because she’s ’better,’ does that mean if she weren’t so good, you wouldn’t choose her?"
Gordon Dawson’s expression instantly turned cold.
Jasper Sterling ignored his venomous expression and continued to ask with a smile, "In other words, if she weren’t pretty enough, or gentle enough, or rich enough, you wouldn’t love her?"
’Wow, that question cuts right to the heart of the matter!’ Jane Lancaster felt a surge of respect for him.
’That insight... it’s incredible!’
Gordon Dawson: "You’re fucking spouting bullshit! That’s not what I meant!"
Pauline Shaw snapped back to her senses and hurriedly defended her boyfriend. "Young Master Sterling, Ian isn’t that kind of person. You don’t understand our relationship at all."
She was speaking to Jasper Sterling, but her eyes were fixed on Jane Lancaster behind him.
’She didn’t understand why Jane Lancaster was hanging out with Jasper Sterling. She used to avoid him whenever she saw him.’
’But one thing was undeniable: Jasper Sterling cared a great deal about Jane Lancaster.’
’His sudden meddling in their business was most likely instigated by Jane Lancaster’s provocations.’
’After all, she and Gordon Dawson had always kept a low profile. Only his relatives and friends knew about their relationship. On her side, very few people knew, because she wanted to hide it from her parents.’
’The only one who knew... was Jane Lancaster.’
Gordon Dawson also realized this and turned to glare angrily at Jane Lancaster. "Are you trying to drive a wedge between us?"
’This woman never had good intentions. She’d wanted to break him and Pauline Shaw up before, and after all these years, she was still stirring up trouble. It was disgusting.’
"Jay, get behind me." Jasper Sterling started to turn, but seeing Jane Lancaster take a step forward instead, he sighed in exasperation and pulled her back.
"Never mind. Just stand with me. Watch out for rabid dogs biting people."
He turned his head to look at Gordon Dawson, his amiable smile never faltering. "I’m the one who said it. Are you trying to pin it on someone else because you’re a bully who preys on the weak and is afraid to offend me?"
Gordon Dawson’s face was livid with anger. "Who are you calling a bully who preys on the weak?"
Jane Lancaster was truly impressed!
’Jasper Sterling is a master at drawing aggro. He’s clearly hit a sore spot with Gordon Dawson.’
Gordon Dawson had been a thug since he was young, and when enraged, he exuded a menacing aura that was genuinely intimidating.
Jasper Sterling failed to appreciate the other man’s "cool, handsome, wild, and tyrannical" vibe, his smile not diminishing in the slightest.
"You, of course. You see that I’m a man and you know who I am, so you only dare to pick on the easy targets."
Gordon Dawson: "Jasper Sterling!"
Jasper Sterling blinked. "See? I didn’t even have to introduce myself, and you already know who I am."
Gordon Dawson was about to go insane with rage.
’Does he think I actually wanted to know who he is? If I didn’t want to get a piece of the pie in the business world, would I have needed to find out who he was?’
’Just because he was born rich, what gives him the right to be so high and mighty?’
