Chapter 42: Chapter 42: It Was Jane Lancaster Who Pushed Me
Jim Jenson turned and saw Pauline Shaw, and his expression changed. "Were you eavesdropping on us?"
Pauline Shaw shot him a look. "Psycho. I just got here."
The person who was actually eavesdropping was someone else entirely. She looked up and called out, "Jay! Where are you? Come on out, stop hiding."
Jane Lancaster: "..."
The moment she turned her head, she was met with Willow Summers’s resentful gaze.
"This is all your fault. You’ve ruined everything for me," Willow Summers whispered.
If Jane Lancaster hadn’t pulled her into hiding, she would have just walked away. After all, to win a man’s favor, you had to be tactful and know when to make yourself scarce.
Now look at this mess. If she were caught eavesdropping, she’d never get on Jim Jenson’s good side.
Jane Lancaster whispered back in an even softer voice, "Now that’s not right. You’re afraid of offending him, but you’re not afraid of offending me?"
Willow Summers dismissed the thought. Compared to Jim Jenson, she was, of course, far more willing to offend Jane Lancaster.
No matter what, Jim Jenson was the most pampered young master of the Jenson Family, the best candidate for her future husband.
She looked up and saw the playful glint in Jane Lancaster’s eyes, and she froze for a second. It was only then, seeing her up close, that she realized the other woman’s features were truly stunning...
Pauline Shaw’s footsteps were already heading their way.
Willow Summers snapped back to her senses. ’Don’t blame me for this,’ she thought. ’Every man for himself...’
Just as she made up her mind, she suddenly saw Jane Lancaster give her a smile.
The next second, a powerful force slammed into her, pushing her body out from their hiding spot.
Pauline Shaw heard the noise and quickened her pace. She had just rounded the rockery when she saw someone stumble out. They were too close for her to dodge, so she could only reach out to steady them.
And ended up with an armful of Willow Summers.
They locked eyes for a moment. Pauline Shaw’s face darkened, and she quickly pushed the other woman away.
Before Willow Summers could even start acting pitiful, she met a pair of menacing eyes. "..."
"What are you doing here?" Jim Jenson asked sinisterly.
Willow Summers’s mind raced. Without a moment’s hesitation, she pointed behind her. "Jane Lancaster pushed me..."
"Are you talking about me?" Jane Lancaster said, strolling over from the corridor on the other side.
Willow Summers: "..."
There was a path behind the rockery. Her plan had been to push Jane Lancaster out and use the opportunity to slip away herself.
But while she was still calculating how much force to use, the other woman had beaten her to the punch.
And she’d done the unthinkable. She’d already gotten away, but instead of leaving, she had actually stepped out into the open.
’Is she trying to shut me up?’ She glared angrily at Jane Lancaster.
Jane Lancaster wore an innocent expression. "What happened? I don’t understand. By the way, Willow Summers, aren’t you supposed to be with Beverly Lynch and the others?"
Willow Summers was about to explode with rage. She was always the one playing the victim, but today, the tables had been turned on her.
Pauline Shaw’s gaze shifted between Willow Summers and Jim Jenson, and she pretty much understood the situation.
It wasn’t exactly surprising. Although her own parents were of equal social standing and she didn’t have to deal with much drama, their circle was never short of stories about people fawning over others to climb the social ladder.
Willow Summers’s ability to tolerate Beverly Lynch’s bad temper and suck up to the young miss was, as expected, just a means to use her as a stepping stone into a wealthy family.
If Beverly Lynch found out about this, all hell would break loose.
Jane Lancaster was using this to threaten her. As long as Willow Summers had half a brain, she’d understand that she couldn’t afford to offend Beverly Lynch before she had secured her marriage into a rich family.
"It’s nothing. I was just joking. Please don’t mind me, Miss Lancaster," Willow Summers said, biting her tongue and swallowing her anger.
Jane Lancaster: "It’s fine. I don’t mind."
Pauline Shaw lowered her gaze, listening quietly to the two of them put on an act, but she wasn’t buying it.
’If Jane Lancaster thinks she can get away with it just like that, she’s being a bit too naive.’
Sure enough, Jim Jenson lost his patience. "Jane Lancaster, do you take me for an idiot?"
"Of course you’re not an idiot," Jane Lancaster said. "But you’re a little too aggressive. Are you in such a hurry to yell at me because you’ve done something to feel guilty about?"
Jim Jenson sneered. "Oh, great! So now you’re turning the tables and blaming me! You followed me, you eavesdropped on me, and now I’m not even allowed to say anything about it? Is this the upbringing of the Lancaster Family?"
"Who were you just talking to?" Jane Lancaster asked curiously.
Their argument was already attracting the attention of other guests.
Jim Jenson looked at Jane Lancaster smugly. This wasn’t some flea market, after all.
The owner of this club was a powerful figure, and its patrons were all business tycoons who came here to talk deals.
These people were conscious of their status and had decorum; they would never do something as impolite as eavesdropping.
That was precisely why he had been chatting idly by the small pond in the courtyard, letting his guard down, never imagining someone would be listening in.
Didn’t Jane Lancaster have any shame, acting so brazenly in a place like this?
Pauline Shaw felt deeply embarrassed and hastily lowered her head. "Jay, stop making a scene. Julian is looking for you."
Besides, Jane Lancaster was the one in the wrong for hiding and listening to other people’s conversations in the first place.
’What’s she feeling so guilty about? Never mind, that’s not the point.’
Willow Summers glanced at the security camera overhead, then looked at Jane Lancaster.
The meaning in her eyes was crystal clear: the camera has recorded everything, so why bother arguing?
Jane Lancaster sighed. She wasn’t trying to argue; she was genuinely curious.
’Willow Summers is being pretty cautious. Is she afraid Jim Jenson will check the security footage?’
’She’s so naive. Jim Jenson doesn’t need evidence. The slightest suspicion is enough for him to latch onto me like a mad dog and not let go.’
’Just like how later, when she tries to get close to Julian, Jim Jenson will become convinced she’s two-timing him, bribe the Summers Family, and have her married off to an old widower. He’s not the type to listen to reason.’
Pauline Shaw was stunned to suddenly hear about Willow Summers’s ultimate fate.
And yet, she wasn’t entirely surprised. After all, for Willow Summers to meet such an end felt like karma.
’Still, that woman really has some nerve,’ Pauline thought. ’Seducing Jim Jenson wasn’t enough, she also wants to get close to Julian?’
Jane Lancaster suddenly spoke up. "In that case, why don’t we have the club pull up the security footage? I’d also like to know who you were just talking to."
Jim Jenson let out a cold laugh. "Fine by me. Let’s check the footage and see who’s really the shameless one here."
He’d never met someone so stubborn, someone who would actively hand him the evidence to bury herself.
Willow Summers deflated. She had tried to hint that there were cameras so they should drop the subject, so why was she bringing it up herself!
Suddenly, Jim Jenson’s phone rang. He glanced down at it, and his face changed dramatically.
"Let’s go. Time to check the footage," Jane Lancaster called out. "I’d like everyone to come and watch, to be my witness."
The club manager had already come out. Normally, they would never show their security footage to anyone, but if two guests were arguing and insisted on seeing it... they weren’t completely inflexible. After all, being in business, they just wanted to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
But Jim Jenson’s heels seemed to be nailed to the floor. He didn’t move an inch.
"Jim Jenson, let’s go," Jane Lancaster called out, looking back at him.
Jim Jenson didn’t say anything, but he shot her a dark look.
Jane Lancaster read the meaning in his eyes. "You don’t want to see the footage?"
"Oh my god, how can you be like this? You know you’re falsely accusing me, yet you act so self-righteous!" Jane Lancaster immediately started putting on a show.
’Perfect! Time to go for the kill while he’s vulnerable!’
