Chapter 3: Chapter 3: You Are About to Break Your Promise
Caleb Lowell carried Jane Lancaster back to her room, laid her on the bed, and pulled the covers over her. He then sat by her side, devotedly coaxing her to sleep.
The warm light of the bedside lamp outlined his handsome features, his eyes filled with focused devotion.
Once her breathing grew steady, he tucked her in. But just as he started to get up, he felt a tug on his hem.
"Jay?" he explained gently. "I’m going to the kitchen to make you some herbal porridge."
Jane Lancaster opened her eyes. "Will you come back?"
’So her strange behavior... is it because she’s insecure and afraid of losing me?’
Caleb Lowell said gently but firmly, "I will. Wait for me."
Jane Lancaster obediently let go, her eyes gazing up at him, seeming to hold all the gentle warmth of a southern landscape.
But the moment Caleb Lowell walked out the door, the look in her eyes changed instantly.
’Haha, clocking out. Bye-bye!’
’You’d never guess, but you’re about to break your promise. "I will come back"? You’re not even coming back tonight.’
’Pauline Shaw is about to give you a little shock! If you still come back after watching that video, I’ll admit defeat!’
Caleb Lowell froze for a moment, then silently closed the door behind him.
The things that had happened today were too incredible to believe.
Why could he suddenly hear Jay’s inner thoughts? And why was she so certain he wouldn’t return?
Her health wasn’t what it used to be. Wasn’t he worried sick about her every single day?
Caleb Lowell went to the kitchen, rolled up his sleeves, and skillfully began preparing the ingredients.
Normally, the cook would handle these things, but when it concerned Jane Lancaster, he couldn’t rest easy unless he did it himself.
The cook said with a smile, "President Lowell is truly devoted to Miss Jane."
Caleb Lowell had been calm, reserved, and a man of few words since he was a child. He normally wouldn’t have bothered to reply.
But now, he couldn’t help but retort, "Jay is the person I’m going to spend the rest of my life with. If I’m not devoted to her, who should I be devoted to?"
The cook smiled sheepishly and didn’t dare to say another word.
Caleb Lowell stared at the stove’s flame, feeling a growing sense of unease.
"Young Master Lowell, Miss Morgan has fainted from a high fever! Could you please take her to the hospital?" The housekeeper, Mrs. Everett, suddenly rushed over.
Caleb Lowell snapped back to his senses, his brow furrowing. "What’s going on?"
Mrs. Everett’s face was filled with anxiety. "Miss Morgan fainted! Just now, the Second Young Master was in such a hurry that he fell while carrying her downstairs. He twisted his ankle and can’t drive now!"
"Miss Morgan looks to be in very bad shape! What should we do?"
’No wonder she felt so hot earlier. So it was already this serious?’
The thought of Luna Morgan’s small, stubborn face made Caleb Lowell feel irritated.
"Why is she always so much trouble? If she was sick, why didn’t she see a doctor sooner?"
"Miss Morgan has had a low-grade fever for a few days," Mrs. Everett explained. "And as you know, after she left in the rain that night, she didn’t even have a place to stay. She spent the entire night in a stairwell..."
"She’s stubborn. No matter how hard things get, she won’t say a word, only ever thinking about Miss Jane. But who knew her good intentions would backfire? The guilt, combined with the high fever... it was too much for her, and she just passed out."
Caleb Lowell’s fingers slowly tightened into a fist. Luna Morgan had fainted because of what he’d said.
"Where are they?"
"This way!"
He hurried away, not even noticing that the porridge in the pot had started to boil over.
In the underground garage, Caleb Lowell, carrying Luna Morgan, saw his cousin sitting in the car and froze. "Pauline? What are you doing here?"
Pauline Shaw pursed her lips. "Bro, saving her is the priority. Let’s get in the car first."

The wind and rain raged outside.
The weather forecast had warned of a severe storm tonight, advising everyone to stay indoors.
Jane Lancaster stood on the edge of the terrace, watching a car drive away into the dark, rainy night.
The car’s taillights faded into the distance, and the night once again became dark and obscure.
Jane Lancaster mused, "Aversion points are so easy to farm. Thirty billion feels like a freebie. By the way, Sys, you guys aren’t going to back out of the deal, are you?"
A mechanical voice slowly replied in her mind, ’We will not. The thirty billion has already been bound to you. It will be unfrozen as soon as you complete the mission.’
"Really? Transfer me 500,000 to prove it," Jane challenged.
The System fell silent.
A minute later, Jane Lancaster’s phone vibrated. She glanced at it and saw a bank deposit notification. 500,000 had really been transferred!
Jane Lancaster’s eyes lit up. "Sys, you’re so generous! A pleasure doing business with you!"
The System replied, ’This 500,000 is an advance. If you want to complete the mission, you’ll need to work hard at plotting against the heroine.’
What it didn’t say was that Luna Morgan was protected by the heroine’s good fortune. No matter how much Jane plotted, she would only be setting the stage for Luna’s success.
The more Jane Lancaster did now, the more mistakes she would make.
And when the final judgment came, her sins would be all the more unforgivable.
"It should work on the whole main cast, right? For example, suppressing Pauline Shaw, deceiving my three brothers, and cuckolding Caleb Lowell!"
Jane Lancaster felt she had mastered the trick to farming aversion points. "When they discover the true face of the vicious supporting female character, they’ll be filled with regret for how they treated the kind heroine!"
The System was silent again.
It seemed the thirty billion was a powerful motivator for her.
"Looks like I’ll have to keep stirring up trouble," Jane Lancaster said with a smile. "Tell me, what’s so great about being the heroine? It’s the villainess who gets to do whatever she wants."
The System replied, ’...As long as you’re happy.’

"Miss Jane, why are you standing here?" Mama Knight came in, knocking as she entered with the herbal porridge. Seeing the wind making the window screens flap loudly, she was so startled that she hurried to close the glass doors to the terrace.
Only then did Jane Lancaster realize her hands and feet were ice-cold. "So cold, so cold."
Mama Knight draped a coat over her. "You’re not well. You mustn’t catch a cold! Young Master Lowell and the Second Young Master would be worried sick!"
She paused, remembering why she had come. "Oh, right. The Second Young Master twisted his ankle, so Young Master Lowell took him to the hospital."
Jane Lancaster asked, "Did Caleb Lowell leave any message before he left?"
Mama Knight froze.
Mrs. Everett, who had been waiting outside, pushed the door open and came in, saying with a smile, "Young Master Lowell said you should rest easy at home. He’ll be back to keep you company very soon."
"Did he really just take my second brother?" Jane Lancaster asked nonchalantly, fiddling with her phone.
Mrs. Everett’s smile grew even more pleasant, as if she were coaxing a little girl. "Yes, of course. He told you not to worry. The Second Young Master will be fine."
Jane Lancaster handed her phone to Mama Knight. "You should both take a look."
On the phone was a video clip: surveillance footage from the basement stairwell.
The smile on Mrs. Everett’s face slowly stiffened.
As Mama Knight watched, she practically exploded with anger.
"Hold on. The Second Young Master and Luna Morgan fell, and there was a whole group of you there. Any two of you could have carried Luna Morgan to the car. Why did you have to go get Young Master Lowell?"
Not only that, but a male servant had been about to pick Luna Morgan up, only to be stopped by Mrs. Everett.
She’d just left Luna Morgan lying on the floor, and a few minutes later, Mrs. Everett appeared on the surveillance footage with Caleb Lowell.
And Caleb Lowell, a known germaphobe, picked Luna Morgan up with almost no hesitation and hurried away.
"Young Master Lowell is Miss Jane’s fiancé!" Mama Knight exclaimed. "What were you thinking, having him escort another woman?"
"But none of us can drive..." Mrs. Everett protested.
"Then you should have called an ambulance!" Mama Knight shot back. "Doctors and nurses know how to take care of a patient better than Young Master Lowell does!"
Mrs. Everett looked incredulous. "Miss Morgan was out in the rain and fainted with a fever because of Miss Jane! The Lancaster Family can’t just sit by and do nothing! Young Master Lowell and I were both just trying to do what’s best for Miss Jane!"
Mama Knight was furious. "You’re just a servant! What right do you have to say you’re doing what’s best for Miss Jane?"
Jane Lancaster said nothing.
At first, Mama Knight’s words sounded like something a villainous side character would say, but she had miraculously hit the nail on the head.
’In the future, Mrs. Everett won’t just have the right—it’ll be perfectly justifiable.’
Jane Lancaster looked down at her phone. "Arrange a car for me right now. I need to go out."
Mrs. Everett put on a troubled expression. "Miss Jane, the drivers have all gone home for the day..."
"I’ll settle the score with you in a couple of days." Jane Lancaster ignored her excuses and gestured to Mama Knight. "Grab the luggage. We’re leaving."
