Chapter 484: Chapter 383: Zheng Yi Miscalculated (2)
"That’s not necessarily true." Another person retorted, "Haven’t you seen battlefields before? Most people actually die from mutual slaughter, rather than sneak attacks."
"Those human race brats are nowhere near that strong. If they dare to appear in front of me, I will definitely slay them."
As soon as the words fell, a teasing voice sounded beside the two Nether Spirit Race cultivators.
"Since you are so strong, I must have to ask for your advice."
"Lin Feng from Five Villages Mountain, please give me some guidance." Around Lin Feng flew his flying swords, portraying a gentlemanly demeanor.
The faces of the two Nether Spirit Race cultivators turned green.
"How did you..."
Jingle!
A crisp bell sound rang out, seemingly insignificant sound waves directly tore apart one of the Nether Spirit Race cultivators.
The remaining one seemed to completely forget what he just said and turned to flee.
Just as he moved, he was already enveloped in white lotus petals and died on the spot.
"What a pity, I really wanted to spar with this guy."
Bai Zhirui gave him an annoyed glare, "Let’s go!"
Noticing the aura of battle, the Nether Spirit Race cultivators chased after them.
They were fast, but Bai Zhirui and the other two were faster, disappearing underground in the blink of an eye.
Though the pursuing Nether Spirit Race soldiers were quick, by the time they arrived, Bai Zhirui and the others had already fled who knows how far away.
Some wanted to continue the chase, but were stopped by a cultivator named Lanshan.
"This is precisely their strategy. If we chase them, they’ll easily shake us off and defeat us one by one."
"Stick to the original plan, but add two more people to each team."
"Be vigilant, once we spot those human race cultivators, don’t think of engaging them, flee immediately and wait for reinforcements."
"Remember, as long as you’re alive, we will eventually capture them."
Bai Zhirui and the others quickly noticed the change in their opponents.
"Fellow Daoist Bai, what should we do now?"
Bai Zhirui relayed Zheng Yi’s decision, "It’s okay, just like before, attack directly."
"I reckon they’ll flee at the first sight of us. If we can kill them, do it. If they manage to escape, don’t pursue, leave immediately to avoid encirclement."
Upon finding another team of Nether Spirit Race cultivators, the group of three struck decisively.
Su Yao used her sound wave technique to control the group’s movements, and Lin Feng acted swiftly, taking out the weakest among them.
It’s better to utterly destroy one than to injure ten.
By the time their opponents reacted and attempted to counter,
Bai Zhirui gave a clear signal, "Go!"
Lin Feng and Su Yao didn’t linger in battle for a moment, turning and vanishing without a trace.
The remaining Nether Spirit Race cultivators took out their weapons.
Yet when they looked up, the area was empty; not a shadow of their assailants in sight.
Upon receiving this news, Lanshan had no choice but to again increase the number of people in each team.
Even though their numbers were greater than those of Bai Zhirui’s group, previous losses had been substantial.
Additionally, increasing the size of each team meant fewer teams could be formed, reducing the area they could search.
On several occasions, Bai Zhirui and the others relied on Zheng Yi’s guidance to slip through the gaps in the encirclement.
Huiyue Demon Venerable, who had been watching from the shadows, had cursed at these cultivators numerous times.
If he was more certain of the woman behind their true abilities, he would have killed these useless fools himself and taken matters into his own hands.
Bai Zhirui and her companions led these Nether Spirit cultivators on a merry chase for seven days.
Consuming all his wits, Lanshan finally managed to corner Bai Zhirui and the others.
"Damn it, let’s see where you run off to this time." Lanshan gritted his teeth and slammed his hand on the table.
Merely seven days in, Lanshan seemed entirely transformed.
His once black hair was now flecked with white, his face gaunt and eyes sunken, devoid of any light.
The look now, uncannily similar to the emaciated Huiyue Demon Venerable.
This battle of wits with Zheng Yi had evidently drained Lanshan immensely.
But no matter, the difficult days were behind them.
They now had Bai Zhirui and her companions cornered on a small hillock.
Lanshan scanned the area, certain that they were right there, even though he couldn’t see anything yet.
"Prepare immediately; we must not let them escape."
Atop the hill, Bai Zhirui and her companions looked down at the busy Nether Spirit cultivators.
Earth cultivators set up arrays to prevent an underground escape.
In the sky, several sword cultivators hovered, with four complete magical restrictions painted across the firmament in vivid colors, mesmerizing to behold.
Beyond this beautiful scene, however, lay an overwhelming murderous intent aimed at them.
"It seems we’re doomed this time." Lin Feng chuckled freely, pulling a wine gourd from nowhere and taking a big swig.
The intoxicating aroma of wine wafted through the air.
"My apologies, my fellow daoists, my guidance has led you to certain doom." Bai Zhirui said somewhat remorsefully.
Zheng Yi’s plan originally had them picking off the ordinary cultivators first.
Then, if they could face Huiyue Demon Venerable one-on-one, there might have been a chance of escape.
Alas, despite the schemes and strategies, fate had the final say, and an unexpected turn of events had occurred.
Even with Zheng Yi’s wisdom, under such an absolute disparity of power,
they could only hide in embarrassment.
Though they’d slain numerous Nether Spirit cultivators, they remained tightly surrounded, unable to break free.
"What are you saying, Fellow Daoist Bai? If it weren’t for your rescue, we’d be long dead and wouldn’t have survived till today."
Su Yao nodded emphatically, "Sister Bai, you don’t have to blame yourself; we bear no ill will."
Bai Zhirui, not one for needless sentimentality, only brought this up to ease her conscience.
"It seems they also need time to recover, so they probably won’t attack immediately."
"Let’s not waste time, restore our strength as much as possible."
"When the battle starts..." She paused and sighed helplessly, "My fellow daoists, take care."
By now, they had no room left for maneuver, only a battle to the last breath.
In direct combat, what matters in the end is power, not schemes and intrigues.
Lin Feng waved his hand, downed the remaining wine, picked a spot, and began cultivating.
Bai Zhirui was about to do the same, when Su Yao stepped up to her quietly.
"Sister Bai, with the enemy at our doorstep and a fate of likely death awaiting us, there are some things I’ve held in my heart for too long and don’t wish to die with regrets."
Despite looking somewhat disheveled from days of fighting, it was clear Su Yao had made an effort to tidy up.
Her slightly pale face was tinged with a faint flush, looking so gentle and frail it stirred a desire to protect her.
"Um..." Bai Zhirui instinctively glanced in Lin Feng’s direction, "At a time like this, shouldn’t you be with Fellow Daoist Lin?"
About to speak, Su Yao paused at the question, "Why?"
Bai Zhirui gave a hinting smile, "Fellow Daoist Su, what need is there for secrecy at this point?"
"Rest assured, I shall seal my hearing later, no matter what you discuss, I won’t eavesdrop."
Su Yao froze momentarily, then silently laughed—a radiant smile like a thorny, flawed rose, captivating and striking.
In that moment, Bai Zhirui found herself momentarily entranced.
"Sister Bai, you misunderstand; my relationship with Brother Lin is not as you think."
"Our two sects are friendly, so Brother Lin and I are simply well-acquainted."
"What?" This answer left Bai Zhirui completely surprised.
The idea that she could be Lin Feng’s Daoist companion was her master’s prediction!
The master who always predicted flawlessly, how could he make such a great error?
Wait a minute...
As if struck by lightning, Bai Zhirui saw memories with the two flash quickly through her mind since meeting them.
If these two were not Daoist companions, things might be taking a turn for the worse...
"Master... Are you there? Master, save me!" Bai Zhirui called out to Zheng Yi desperately in her divine sense.
But, there came no response from her master.
Seeing her reaction, Su Yao beamed another smile, "Sister Bai, it seems you understand now."
"You guessed right, I like you. Would you be my Daoist companion?"
