Chapter 518: Chapter 518: Is He Naturally Quiet?
Ji Jian found it hard to describe.
"Then you definitely should feel guilty."
After all, the commander and his wife hoped Jiang Xingxing would take the exam and return to Jiangnan, but quietly, the girl pulled a big stunt.
The fact that the commander and his wife haven’t come to trouble Yi Chichi really shows their patience.
After holding back several times, she couldn’t help but quip, "If it were me, I’d definitely come and have a fight with you."
At this point, she curiously asked, "Why did Xingxing come to you about the application?"
Yi Chichi puffed her chest, "The commander sent her."
This was what Jiang Xingxing personally told her, and Wen Shi could also vouch that it was the commander’s words.
When she explained this, Ji Jian understood.
"So, the commander knew where Xingxing wanted to apply but worried the wife wouldn’t agree, so he threw you under the bus?"
When saying this, she looked around as if afraid someone would hear, filled with the thrill of gossip.
Yi Chichi nodded, "That’s exactly what you’re thinking."
Wen Sheng instantly chimed in, "Then the one who should feel guilty is the commander, not you."
After all, without the commander’s secret instigation, Jiang Xingxing wouldn’t have come to find Yi Chichi.
So, the blame should really be on the commander.
Wen’s mother listened to the two seriously complain about the commander’s underhandedness, how even several people from the Jiang family couldn’t handle an outsider, feeling both amused and helpless.
"Enough complaining, it’s in the past. As long as Xingxing learns well and can contribute to the country, her education won’t be in vain, and she’ll add a glow to the Jiang family’s reputation!"
This was also true.
Ji Jian wholeheartedly agreed, but soon after, she had a new question.
"What major did Xingxing apply for?"
Yi Chichi paused, "Some aerospace maritime-related discipline, but I don’t know exactly which one."
Ji Jian acknowledged, all sounding so high-level and profound that she, being away from school for over ten years, didn’t understand.
Thus, the topic ended there.
Ji Jian bid farewell and went home, Wen’s mother and Yi Chichi each got busy, waiting for Wen Shi to bring the child back home.
But no matter how long they waited, the father and son were nowhere to be found.
Worried about them, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law tidied up and went out to find them, only to discover at the training ground that Wen Shi was showing off his son to his comrades who had just finished the night patrol.
The married and unmarried soldiers all gathered to play with the child, and little Wen Yi was brave, with a natural knack for socializing. He didn’t cry, babbling and interacting, his little hands were constantly waving, exploring people’s ears, noses, and mouths.
When the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law arrived, the child was being held by a bearded soldier. He was studying the soldier’s chin, probably finding it prickly, touching it and then turning his head to make a sound at Wen Shi.
Wen Shi then explained to him that it was a beard, a mark of manhood, and bragged to his comrades about how clever his son was, just like him.
Afraid he might say something inappropriate, Wen’s mother called out to Wen Shi, making the man immediately turn around. Seeing the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, he displayed a bright smile.
"Hurry and give my son back to me, my wife and mom have come to take us home."
Before he finished speaking, he quickly snatched the child from his comrade and headed their way.
Seeing Yi Chichi and the others, the men greeted them as ’mom’ and ’sister-in-law’, to which the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law smiled and nodded in response. When the father and son got close, Wen’s mother pressed her voice and asked, "What time is it, why don’t you know to come home?"
It was one thing not to come home, but taking such a young child and not knowing to return made her angry.
"Yiyi, come, let grandma hold you."
Wen Shi hurriedly handed the child over, and Wen’s mother took the baby and started heading back.
The couple quickly followed.
Then, Wen Shi watched as his mother walked briskly ahead and softly spoke to Yi Chichi, "Mom is angry?"
"Shouldn’t mom be angry?"
Yi Chichi retorted with a question instead of answering.
Wen Shi fell silent, realizing this was difficult to answer truthfully.
But his wife seemed upset too, so she probably should be.
Thinking this way, his thoughts quickly aligned.
"I’m sorry, I promise I won’t make the same mistake next time."
Wen’s mother paused in her steps, Yi Chichi twitched the corner of her mouth, convinced that this guy had no clue what he did wrong.
"You can take the baby out to play, but before a year old, it’s best not to take the baby out at night, not for long periods like that."
"...Alright."
His wife said it, so that’s how it should be; all he needed to do was listen.
"Weren’t you supposed to deliver vegetables to the canteen, how come you ended up at the training ground?"
Wen Shi sheepishly rubbed his nose, "Well, a lot of the brothers haven’t met Yiyi yet, so I thought I’d let them see him on the way over."
"Next time, let them see during the day."
"Mm."
The family district was not quiet at night. Kids having finished their homework and meals were reluctant to sleep and gathered to play noisily.
Parents were calling them home to wash up and sleep.
The men returning from busy work formed small groups, chatting as they walked, until little Wen Yi became uncomfortable and started crying, prompting Wen Shi to dash home at full speed with the baby.
By the time Yi Chichi and Wen’s mother entered the house, he was already wiping Wen Yi’s bottom with a towel.
Little Wen Yi, lying down with his chunky legs supported, kept cooing at the light bulb above, eager to put his hand in his mouth.
Yi Chichi quickly stopped him, "You can’t suck on that, let daddy clean you up first."
Wen Shi glanced over and agreed, "Definitely can’t suck on that, Dongzi and them have dirty faces."
Their precious little one had investigated several brothers’ facial features, probably now with dirt all over his hands.
"Might as well give him a bath for a good night’s sleep."
"That works."
So the three of them busied themselves giving Wen Yi a bath, and then had their meal.
After a satisfying meal, Wen Yi fell into a deep sleep in Yi Chichi’s arms.
Wen Shi, observing his sleeping face, softly suggested, "You can put him down now."
Yi Chichi nodded, put Wen Yi down, stretched her body, then sat in the chair and beckoned Wen Shi over, "Come here, give my neck a massage."
Wen Shi was at her side instantly, "How long did you embroider today?"
"Four or five hours, intermittently."
After all, Wen’s mother had things to tend to, leaving her to look after the baby.
Only when Wen’s mother was around, or Wen Yi was asleep, did she have time for work.
"How much have you embroidered?"
"The dog is almost done."
Wen Shi, "..."
He responded, advising, "Maintain this pace after I go to sea, don’t rush to finish and compromise your eyesight..."
He went on and on, and Yi Chichi initially responded patiently, but when he started talking about how many times she’d miss him once he was at sea, she couldn’t hold it in anymore.
"Alright, once you’re at sea, I won’t do anything else but stare at your photo and miss you!"
Wen Shi was left speechless by her words, seemingly joking but with an underlying sarcasm.
"Why aren’t you talking now, was being silent an inborn trait?"
"...Wife, please don’t do this, I’m scared."
Yi Chichi laughed, "You’re scared too?"
"A whole lot."
He turned around, squatted in front of her, grabbed her hand, and began to act cutely.
"Wife, next time can you not be sarcastic with me? I’m really scared, better you just criticize or hit me."
"Your skin is thick and flesh tight, hitting you would hurt my hand. If you want me to use a needle on you, that’s possible."
"I’d rather not, be sarcastic instead."
He looked terrified, as if afraid she’d really use a needle on him.
His grip on her hand tightened.
Yi Chichi was amused by him, "Alright, just joking."
