Chapter 23 - First Fight (2)

(Chris's PoV)

After my name was called, I walked to the ground where I would fight with my opponent. So did my opponent. Except for us two, the others found places to take a seat and observe the match.

Once we got to the stage, Mrs. Hale spoke, "Remember, this is just a training fight, not an actual fight. So, no attacks on vital areas. I will end the match if there is any danger to the pet. Also, this is pet vs pet, so don't go on attacking the tamer. Those matches would come later. In addition to that, the match would end when one emerges as victor or when the match time exceeds five minutes".

"Do you understand?" she asked us. No, she demanded that we understand the rules or may pay the price if we are negligent.

We both nodded, "We understand Mrs. Hale".

Once she got her answer, she nodded and announced, "Now, let's begin the match".

Once Mrs. Hale gave the signal, we brought our pets out. Luckily when I brought Snow out, she was not sleeping. A tamer can interact with his pet even when the pet is still in the Beast Space. So, I already spoke with her before I got onto the stage.

If she shows up sleeping, then I would become the laughingstock of the school, which I don't like to happen. No one would want to become the laughingstock.

Though I negotiated with her before I summoned her out, I still was fearful whether she would arrive in a sleep state or in the normal state that a pet appears when they were summoned.

Lucky for me, she did exactly as she promised.

Now coming to my opponent, John summoned his pet as well at the same time as me. It was a Golden Lion.

It is a known pet but not a common one. Normally, common people can't afford them, as they are very costly. I don't think that the alliance offered them as well in the form of beast eggs to us.

I mean there were a few beast eggs labelled as unidentified but no one touched them. It would be essentially gambling away their lives. No one would risk such a thing.

So that means John's parents brought him this pet. If he has such rich parents why is he here?

Rich parents mean better starting pets and better resources to train the pets. The only ones who come to the school now are the ones who can't afford such pets and resources.

Most of the beast-tamer families are living paycheck to paycheck. Everything that they earn would be spent as soon as they were earned. If they want to save for the future, it would only cause damage in the long run.

In a world infested with monsters, everyone had to strive towards reaching higher ranks. So most families don't have vaults specially purposed for their children's needs. They do what they can but after the awakening, the children have to earn on their own or else would fall behind others.

Many believe that becoming a beast tamer is synonymous with being rich but that is wrong. Most beast tamers are similar to commoners when coming to financial situations. Sure, the beast tamers would be powerful and would be able to survive monster attacks but when comes to bank balances, most of their money would come and go away the next minute.

The resources required to increase their strength would cost a lot.

First, a beast tamer has to increase their own personal strength.

After that, there are the pets. The more pets a beast tamer has, the more powerful he could become but that is not an indication of their current strength. It just states their future strength.

To reach such a stage, they have to improve their pets and to do that, costs a lot.

To increase the level of a pet, proper food and battles are required but crossing ranks can only be achieved through feeding the pet various rare resources. The higher the quality of these resources are the better the prowess of the pet would be.

The status of a pet only shows the level and rank of the pet, not its true prowess. So, it was advised by our teachers to not look down on a pet because it is of lower rank.

A pet's prowess can also be increased by the usage of its skills. Having a skill doesn't mean that they can use that skill at its maximum level. No, it only means that they have access to that skill.

How they use it depends on their capabilities.

This training session is for that very purpose. If we go out after taming a pet and thinking that we are invincible, then that would be the end of the line for us in this journey.

It's not like in those novels where after we awaken, suddenly we would be invincible enough to fight monsters of higher levels. Sure there is physical training but we are tamers and have never been trained with a beast as a partner, nor with the magic skills that we got after we bonded with our pet beasts.

The Golden Lion is a mutant variant. Mutant doesn't mean powerful but they are different from the normal. In this case, though, it's a powerful one. Golden Lion after all is a well-known power beast, as one Golden Lion rules the forest south of the city.

For a family that can afford the golden lion, they should have enough resources to privately train but I am not complaining though.

It can be a good thing for me or a bad thing depending on how one sees it. The thing was this match is just for training purposes. Whether I win or lose, I would gain experience and there will be no loss. So, I see this fight as a good thing for me.

I can learn a thing or two.
