Chapter 99: Chapter 98: A Great Relief! Feng Yuefang is Fired
Just then, the phone rang.
It was Director Lin calling Feng Yuefang, telling her to come to his office.
Feng Yuefang knew it had to be about yesterday’s news report. Director Lin had always relied on her and tacitly approved of her methods and schemes.
Just as she was about to head to Director Lin’s office, her father called.
"Fangfang, do you have a minute? My chest feels a little tight. It’s probably my old problem, some angina. Can you take me to the hospital?"
Feng Yuefang knew about her father’s condition, so she didn’t think much of it.
"Dad, I have to go to the director’s office right now for something work-related. I’ll call you as soon as I’m out. How about this: you call a cab and head to the City First Hospital ER first."
"I should be out pretty quickly. I’ll come find you at the hospital directly."
After hanging up, Feng Yuefang still chose to handle her work first.
After all, she had put a lot of thought into this particular news report.
Once she was in the office, Director Lin didn’t waste any time. He praised Feng Yuefang’s work ethic, her ability to choose topics, and her talent for creating buzz.
Hearing Director Lin’s praise, Feng Yuefang felt quite smug and confident.
"Director Lin, it’s just as they say: a strong general has no weak soldiers. Aren’t my abilities and sharp instincts a result of your training?"
"So, does my latest draft need any changes?"
Feng Yuefang looked at Director Lin expectantly.
Director Lin took a sip of tea, his expression unreadable.
"Yuefang, this report of yours... setting the facts aside, it’s certainly a top-notch topic. It’s just that we can’t broadcast it."
"The impact of this story would be too negative. You should find a different topic."
"Director Lin, I went to the City First Hospital ER and filmed this myself. I guarantee it’s all firsthand material. All the footage is authentic. The doctor involved, the patient’s family, the onlookers—they were all filmed right there on the scene."
"Is it because the leadership at City First Hospital put pressure on you? Director Lin, we journalists are supposed to be upright and impartial, stick to the facts, have strong convictions, and never bow down!"
"You’re the one who taught me that. Are we just going to drop the story because of pressure from City First Hospital’s leadership?"
"I won’t accept this!"
Feng Yuefang always knew how to take the moral high ground.
"Director Lin, if you don’t agree, I’ll take this to Director Cai. Director Cai is known for being fair and strict, open and aboveboard. He’s not afraid to expose social injustices and seek justice for the vulnerable!"
Feng Yuefang spoke with self-righteous conviction, refusing to back down an inch.
Seeing Feng Yuefang’s self-righteous act, Director Lin actually let out a short, angry laugh.
"Feng Yuefang, oh, Feng Yuefang. Do you have any idea that I’m giving you a chance?"
"If it weren’t for the fact that we’ve worked together for years and you’ve been one of my top people, do you think I’d be giving you this chance to fix things?"
"If it weren’t for the fact that I’m short-staffed right now and have no one to replace you on short notice, do you think I’d be giving you any leeway at all?"
"And you want to go to Director Cai? Do you really not know what you’ve done?"
Director Lin took a file folder from his desk and tossed it to Feng Yuefang.
"Originally, I was going to give you some time. Wait for a new person to come in and take over your role, then slowly transfer you out. It would have saved everyone some face, since you’re a veteran here, after all."
"But since you want to do this the hard way, I’ll just tell you straight."
"As of today, you don’t need to come to work anymore. The HR department will handle the rest of the process with you."
Director Lin’s moral compass was average at best. As long as things looked proper on the surface, he could tolerate a lot. If something was to his advantage, he could put up with it for a while.
He had originally planned to keep using Feng Yuefang for a while longer, waiting until he had personnel arrangements sorted out before having a showdown and getting her to resign voluntarily.
But Feng Yuefang’s behavior had been a great disappointment.
Feng Yuefang took the file folder and saw the chat logs and transaction records between herself and Luo Xiaohu.
"Director Lin, I..."
Feng Yuefang was speechless, struck dumb as if by lightning.
"Let me be perfectly clear. Director Cai originally wanted to deal with you himself, but he gave me some face and agreed to let you save some of your own by resigning quietly."
"But now, I see that’s no longer necessary."
Director Lin stood up, walked past Feng Yuefang, and said coldly:
"I have another meeting. When I get back, I don’t want to see you in this station again."
"This is Director Cai’s decision as well."
"You’ve committed a fundamental breach of journalistic ethics!"
Listening to Director Lin’s fading footsteps, Feng Yuefang felt her spirit drain away. ’I’m finished,’ she thought. ’Now that Director Cai knows about my dirty dealings, there’s no way he’ll tolerate me.’
Dejected, Feng Yuefang finally left Director Lin’s office.
As she sat in her car, miserable and depressed, she had completely forgotten about her father’s situation.
...
...
「At City First Hospital.」
Feng Shanhe arrived at the ER. After a series of examinations, he was diagnosed with a mild myocardial infarction. While it wasn’t life-threatening yet, it still required immediate surgery.
The attending physician was Yasui from the emergency surgery team.
Yasui came from a humble background. After the incident with Ding Yue the day before, he had resolved to always protect himself, no matter the situation.
Given Feng Shanhe’s condition, the sooner the surgery, the better. But after what happened yesterday, Yasui decided it was safer to stick to procedure. Besides, the patient’s family could get there quickly enough.
That way, all the paperwork would be in order, and there would be no trouble for anyone.
"Feng Shanhe, contact your family as soon as possible. After you’ve spoken with them, get yourself admitted and we’ll schedule the surgery right away."
"Have your children come over quickly. There’s a pre-operative consultation, and they’ll need to sign the relevant consent forms."
Yasui urged the patient, making sure he understood the seriousness of the situation.
"Okay, Dr. An. My daughter should be here soon."
"Once she’s here, I’ll get admitted and arrange for the surgery."
Since he had already called his daughter, Feng Shanhe wasn’t too worried. For now, the pain was still bearable.
Hearing that the patient’s daughter was on her way and that the situation had been explained, Yasui confirmed the procedure was being followed and called the next number.
The doctor had said his daughter needed to sign the surgical consent form before the operation. Since he couldn’t do it himself, he took a seat in the ER and began to wait.
At the same time, he sent his daughter a text message:
"Fangfang, are you here yet? The exam shows it’s a mild myocardial infarction. They say it’s best to have surgery immediately. I need you to come help me with the admission paperwork, and you have to sign for the surgery beforehand."
"When you get here, come find me in the ER lobby."
However, Feng Yuefang never replied. Suddenly, Feng Shanhe felt another pang of angina.
Feng Shanhe was a simple and honest man, so he decided to wait for his daughter to arrive before doing anything else.
Dr. An had told him that according to hospital procedure, he couldn’t have the surgery until his daughter arrived. He didn’t know there was also a "green channel" for emergencies.
The emergency surgery consultation room was swamped with patients. A moment later, another one came in who needed immediate resuscitation!
After dutifully attending to that patient, Yasui forgot all about Feng Shanhe and whether he had gone to surgery.
