Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Wu Ting Takes Charge, Yasui Realizes His Mistake
After collecting the money, the bald man cheerfully headed for the trauma bay, ready to take the old man away.
Inside, Xiao Xixi was already monitoring the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen saturation.
The old man was still crying out from the bed:
"Doctor, where are the painkillers...? It hurts... so much... It’s killing me..."
Seeing the old man still putting on such a committed performance, the bald man chuckled. He walked to the bedside and leaned in to whisper:
"Hey, old man, we got the money. We can go now."
"Good haul today."
The bald man moved to take the pulse oximeter clip off the old man’s finger.
"Hey, what do you think you’re doing? The patient’s condition is still uncertain. He needs to remain on the monitor."
Xiao Xixi snapped.
"Hey, Nurse Xiao, there’s nothing wrong with my dad. Let’s go, old man."
The bald man completely ignored her.
Just then, Yasui strolled over with the pain medication. Seeing the scene, he prepared to watch Wu Ting make a fool of himself.
’Broken ribs? His life is in danger? Please. The second they get the money, they’re ready to bolt faster than a rabbit.’
"No. You can’t leave without Dr. Wu’s confirmation. He went to call a doctor from orthopedics for a consult."
Xiao Xixi refused to indulge them.
The bald man frowned, but just then, Wu Ting returned from his phone call.
"Dr. Wu, the patient’s family is demanding to leave."
Yasui piped up.
Wu Ting looked at Yasui, then at the bald man. His tone was stern.
"The patient’s condition is serious. He has broken ribs and very likely has complications, such as a pneumothorax or hemothorax."
"Arrange a chest X-ray for him immediately. We need to determine the exact location and severity of the fractures and check for any other chest injuries."
"Yasui, is the painkiller injection ready?"
Seeing that Wu Ting was completely unfazed, Yasui let out an exasperated laugh.
"Dr. Wu, you can see there’s nothing wrong with the patient. His family wants to leave. What’s all this talk about broken ribs?"
Seeing how uncooperative Yasui was being, Wu Ting had no time to argue with him.
He looked directly at Xiao Xixi.
"Sister Xiao, you take care of it!"
The patient, his face pale with pain, cursed at the bald man from the bed.
"Get lost! Listen to Dr. Wu! I need painkillers... It’s killing me... ARGH..."
The bald man scratched the back of his head, a suspicion growing. ’Did the old man actually screw up and get hit for real?’
He stepped aside to give Wu Ting and Xiao Xixi some space, deciding to wait and see what happened next.
Xiao Xixi immediately followed Wu Ting’s orders and gave the patient the painkiller injection.
"Sister Xiao, take the patient to get an X-ray."
Wu Ting wasted no more words. He turned to Yasui again, his voice now pure command.
"Yasui, I’m the team leader. You’re more familiar with the doctors from the old thoracic surgery department. I need you to contact them immediately and get someone over here for a consult. The patient very likely has a pneumohemothorax and will need surgery."
Yasui was annoyed by Wu Ting’s authoritative tone, but since he still had to work in the ER, he had no choice but to go find the doctor.
However, he didn’t take the request seriously, failing to grasp the gravity of the situation. He was familiar with the doctors from the old thoracic surgery department, but that department had since been disbanded and merged into cardiothoracic surgery. That group of doctors had lost their morale. Besides, looking at the time, they’d probably already gone home for the day.
Normally, in an emergency like this, he would have called immediately. If no one picked up, he would have rushed over to their department to get them in person.
This time, however, Yasui didn’t even bother to call. He just trudged over at a snail’s pace.
By the time he finally arrived at the cardiothoracic surgery ward, the doctor from the old thoracic team had left only a few minutes prior.
Seeing that the thoracic surgeon had left for the day, Yasui couldn’t have cared less. ’It would have been a waste of time to call him anyway,’ he thought.
’What does Wu Ting know about diagnosing a pneumothorax or hemothorax? What does he know about broken ribs?’
Yasui would admit that Wu Ting was skilled at appendectomies, but that didn’t mean he was better at everything.
Yasui was dead set on his belief: the old man was faking it. There were no broken ribs.
’Besides, Yasui had watched the bald man earlier. He’d pulled that young couple aside and had them sign a private settlement. Would such a practiced scammer really go so far as to get hit by a car for real?’
Yasui decided to just head to the smoking area in the cardiothoracic surgery ward for a cigarette before slowly making his way back.
By the time Yasui got back to the ER,
Xiao Xixi had already brought the patient back from his X-ray.
An attending physician from orthopedics, You Chong, had also hurried over.
Wu Ting looked at Yasui. "Where is the thoracic surgeon?"
Yasui shrugged. "After the thoracic department was dissolved, the surgeons there got pretty demoralized. They don’t have many operations, so he left early for the day. He was long gone by the time I got there."
"You want me to call him now and tell him to rush back?"
Wu Ting was furious at Yasui’s response, but diagnosing the patient was the priority.
A moment later, Xiao Xixi returned with the X-ray films.
You Chong immediately took the films to examine them. As he did, his expression grew solemn.
"Dr. Wu’s diagnosis was spot on. The patient definitely has fractured ribs. Look here."
Dr. You pointed to the film.
"This one here, and this one, are both fractured. The broken ends have shifted inward, piercing the pleura, intercostal blood vessels, and lung tissue. It’s caused a hemopneumothorax!"
"We need to stabilize his chest with a binder immediately. He needs surgery right away. I’ll need a thoracic surgeon to help me perform a closed thoracostomy for drainage, then I can fixate the fractured ribs."
Hearing Dr. You’s diagnosis, Xiao Xixi, Yasui, and the bald man were all stunned.
Yasui, in particular, looked horrified. He knew he was in deep trouble.
’If he really has broken ribs and a hemopneumothorax, the patient could die without immediate surgery.’
’If I had just listened to Wu Ting, been a little more responsible and proactive, the thoracic surgeon would have been here by now.’
’What am I going to do?’
A chilling fear washed over Yasui.
The bald man finally realized what was happening.
"Old man, you screwed up? You actually got hit?!"
The old man was in so much pain he could barely keep his eyes open. His heart was racing, and his breathing grew rapid.
The bald man’s expression soured instantly. His dad was only trying to pull a scam, not get himself killed!
"Doctor, you have to operate on my father! Hurry!"
"Where’s the thoracic surgeon? I thought someone went to get him ages ago! The orthopedist is already here!"
The bald man whipped his head around to glare at Yasui.
Yasui took a guilty step back. "The doctor... he went home for the day."
"Went home? Couldn’t you have called him? You couldn’t have contacted him earlier?"
"I saw you arguing with Dr. Wu earlier. You dragged your feet when he told you to give my dad painkillers. Did you deliberately take your time getting the thoracic surgeon, too?"
"How long has it been since you were sent to find him!"
The bald man was already fuming. This scam had backfired spectacularly. If his dad really had broken ribs, the eight thousand yuan he’d just received wouldn’t be nearly enough to cover the surgery and follow-up expenses.
"No! You quack! You’re the one who delayed my dad’s surgery. You’re going to pay for this!"
The bald man grabbed a fistful of Yasui’s scrubs.
"That’s enough! The patient needs surgery now."
"Dr. You, I’ll assist you. I can perform the closed thoracostomy."
"Yasui, get ready. You’re assisting me in the OR."
Wu Ting’s voice was calm but left no room for argument. He then turned to the bald man.
"If you don’t want anything to happen to your father, you’ll stay put and keep quiet."
Faced with Wu Ting’s stern command and remembering his earlier display of exceptional medical skill, how could the bald man dare to cause any more trouble?
"Okay, okay... Dr. Wu, whatever you say. Please, you have to save my old man."
Hearing Wu Ting’s orders, Yasui felt as if he’d been granted amnesty. He immediately scrambled to prepare for the surgery.
