Chapter 113: Caring For Him
The heavy pole clattered against the frozen wooden deck.
Ace’s chest heaved rapidly. His skin was a deathly shade of blue, coated in a thick layer of frost.
He had just single-handedly smashed four giant rogue icebergs to save the flagship.
And no matter how strong he was, his body had taken the impact directly.
His knees buckled.
The man collapsed onto the icy deck, completely unconscious from what looked like... extreme hypothermia.
"Your Grace!" the Captain panicked, running forward to check, "He’s freezing... His pulse is fading."
The crew was startled by his words.
Evelina stepped out of the cabin, her face was unreadable.
She walked right past Ace’s shivering body, "Captain"
"Y-Yes... My Lady," the Captain trembled.
Evelina pulled a note from her sleeves and handed it to the man, "For the broken iron pole," she said calmly, "Clean the deck."
The crew gasped in disbelief. They had, by now, heard of the connection between Ace and Evelina.
And they knew the Duke and Duchess of North had a complicated relationship.
But hearing was one thing, witnessing it was another.
"She is too heartless, even for a woman huh..." someone whispered, "The man just risked his life but she cares more of the ship."
The discussions rose, criticizing Evelina more and more.
The Captain was a smarter man. Initially, he had frozen in shock but one look at Evelina and he understood the implication in her eyes.
"Take him to the secondary cabin," He ordered the two medics present on the ship, sweating despite the freezing wind, "Hurry!"
As Ace was taken to the secondary cabin, Evelina calmly followed.
The moment the door was closed behind him, Evelina’s cold expression vanished.
She retreated a few steps away from the crowd and found an empty corner.
’Ping’
’Ping’
[SYSTEM WARNING: TARGET’S LIFE SIGNALS DROPPING RAPIDLY.]
Evelina glanced through the visible options on the menu before her eyes locked onto a corner she had never paid attention to before today.
"Open the medical shop..." The function seemed newly available alongwith some other functions she had had unlocked during the completion of her missions in Aurelia.
But Evelina had no time to ask the System about that as she commanded it.
[Initiating Emergency Medical Shop...]
The system immediately presented her with a small list of emergency medical items, each costing more than the other.
"What would help Ace right now?"
[The System will handpick the items that can help the Target’s condition, but the purchase amount...]
"You can deduct it from the heart-wrecker points I already possess or put it on credits. I don’t care. Make the purchase immediately!" Evelina didn’t realize there was an unusual panic in her own voice.
The System went fully silent for a minute and just as Evelina opened her mouth again, there was finally a response from the System.
[PURCHASING: Elite Western Fire-Fox Fur Blankets—35,000 Heart Wrecker Points(converted to gold)]
[PURCHASING: Divine Regeneration Pill—89,000 Heart Wrecker Points(converted to Gold)]
The total amount nearly touched all the points she had gained after her total money reset to zero but Evelina didn’t even blink an eye as she waited for it to go through.
A sense of unusual urgency consumed her heart.
There a blinding flash that disappeared in a split-second.
Two thick blankets made of fiery orange fur appeared in her arms, radiating an intense heat. And in her palm, there was a golden pill.
The Captain had already cleaned the crowd by the time Evelina returned.
She pushed open the door and dismissed the medics who were trembling while taking care of Ace, "Don’t tell anyone I came here."
Ace’s condition was visibly delicate and the men were no divine doctors. They feared the consequences of accidentally being unable to save a Duke.
Once Evelina asked them to get away, they looked almost relieved.
Evelina rushed to the bed.
Ace’s face was covered in a thin layer of frost and his body shook uncontrollably.
The man’s brows were drawn taut and his lips were moving as he struggled on the bed. It looked like he was having a nightmare.
Evelina didn’t waste a second as she threw the fire-fox blankets over his body, tucked them tightly around his shoulders.
Then, she leaned forward and lifted his jaw before pushing the golden pill between his pale lips.
Before she could pour the warm cup of water she held in his mouth, the golden pill rolled out as the man pressed his lips tighter.
Evelina tried again, "Are you a stubborn idiot...?" she whispered under her breath.
But the same thing happened again.
He spat the pill before she could pour the water.
Evelina hurriedly grabbed the pill and frowned.
Without a second thought, she poured warm water in her mouth, rolled the pill between her teeth and leaned towards the man.
She pushed the pill with the tip of her tongue. The moment his lips opened to spit the pill, she captured his lips, transferring all the water into his mouth.
Within a few seconds, his struggles ceased and he gulped the pill.
Evelina pulled back, raising a hand to wipe the water dripping from the corner of her lips as she looked at him closely.
Within a minute, a hint of color returned to his cheeks.
It was subtle but Evelina could feel the warmth in his skin and her heartbeats slowly calmed down seeing that he seemed to recover.
Evelina sat on the edge of the bed for hours.
She wiped the freezing sweat from his forehead with the long sleeve of her dress.
She held his freezing hand under the blanket, rubbing it occasionally to provide warmth.
At this moment, footsteps echoed outside the door.
Evelina instantly stood up and slipped out through the back door of the cabin, as if she had never been there.
"Evelina..." Ace frowned in his sleep, his gaze disoriented as his eyes opened slowly.
His vision was blurry and he could barely sense anything.
