Chapter 372: Chapter 370: It’s You
Jiang Chen refused to yield an inch.
Zhao Bing snorted. "Brat, you’re nothing but a worthless cur. What makes you think your life is comparable to the Patriarch of the Qin Family?"
"Your life is worth no more than an ant’s."
He was furious with Jiang Chen. ’He’s too arrogant, too brazen.’
It was more than he could stand.
Jiang Chen slowly drew a blade—the Cloud Mist Sword—and pointed its tip directly at Zhao Bing.
"City Lord Zhao, don’t you forget—you’re the one who threw me in prison."
"And today, I’m coming for your life as well."
Powerful. Fearless.
Such was the Jiang Chen of this moment.
He had actually threatened to take the life of City Lord Zhao Bing.
Everyone was stunned.
"I’ve never seen someone so audacious."
"This is a real eye-opener. He dared to wager his life against the Patriarch of the Qin Family and demand the life of Guyue City’s Lord Zhao Bing."
"This kid is simply heaven-defying."
The crowd burst into an uproar.
Jiang Chen’s display was truly astonishing.
Even Zhan Yang and Niu Tuo, watching from the crowd, were utterly shaken.
And yet, a hot-blooded excitement surged through them.
"Jiang Chen is so damn aggressive! I wonder if he can really take Zhao Bing’s life."
"That’s the City Lord we’re talking about, ruler of a city in the Fire Sparrow Kingdom."
No one could have imagined that Jiang Chen’s aggression could be so boundless.
Zhao Bing’s expression darkened.
He roared, "You damn brat! You’re far too arrogant!"
"The Qin Family won’t even need to lift a finger—I’ll kill you with my own two hands!"
He was enraged by Jiang Chen’s words.
’Threatening to take my life? How utterly laughable.’
Fortunately, Zhao Bing was a master of hiding his emotions and managed to suppress his anger in time.
He decided to wait for Qin Yun to make his move.
’Let’s see if Jiang Chen can even survive the next few hurdles.’
’If Jiang Chen fails any of them, he’ll have to kill himself in front of everyone. I won’t need to do a thing.’
His eyes glinted with malice. ’Let’s see how you die today.’
Qin Yun turned and shouted toward the City Lord’s Mansion, "Young Master Wan, the first trial is all yours!"
Soon, a young man in the white robes of an Alchemist emerged from the City Lord’s Mansion.
He carried himself with an air of extreme arrogance, walking out at a leisurely pace.
Everyone around, whether from the Qin Family or the City Lord’s Mansion, greeted him with deference.
"Young Master Wan."
"Young Master Wan!"
The young man tilted his head back haughtily, ignoring them all.
He strode straight to the front of the crowd.
Qin Yun immediately hurried forward with a broad smile. "Young Master Wan, we’ll be troubling you for this."
"I hope you can crush him."
This Young Master Wan was none other than Lord Wangu, the son of the President of the Guyue City Alchemist Guild.
He was a genuinely formidable Alchemist in his own right, having already achieved the rank of Second-Grade Alchemist.
He nodded at Qin Yun. "Dealing with a mere brat like him? I could crush him in minutes."
He then turned his head, his gaze falling upon the tall, straight figure of Jiang Chen at the forefront of the crowd.
The moment his eyes fell on Jiang Chen...
...Lord Wangu shuddered violently.
His eyes flew wide in disbelief, and his jaw hung open as he stared at Jiang Chen.
Jiang Chen, too, stared in surprise at the man who had appeared.
’It’s him.’
Jiang Chen recognized him, of course. This was one of the men who had been after the Black Fire in the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain.
He had been accompanied by members of the Blood Light Mercenary Corps, all of whom were later annihilated in the Ghost Temple. Jiang Chen remembered it clearly.
"It’s you?"
Lord Wangu finally managed to exclaim, his shock giving way to astonishment.
His eyes were fixed intently on Jiang Chen.
To say Jiang Chen’s appearance was unexpected would be an understatement.
After all, Lord Wangu had paid a heavy price in his quest for the Black Fire.
In the end, he had come away with nothing, while Jiang Chen had claimed the prize.
So, seeing Jiang Chen standing right before him now, he was utterly stunned.
And deep within, a faint glimmer of anticipation even began to stir.
The Black Fire, a Fire of Heaven and Earth, would undoubtedly improve his Alchemy Skill.
It was an Ultimate Treasure of Heaven and Earth—something one could only stumble upon by chance, never actively seek out.
"That’s right. It’s me,"
Jiang Chen replied coolly.
Lord Wangu’s face twitched. He had watched with his own eyes as Jiang Chen obtained the Black Fire.
Now, upon meeting Jiang Chen again, the thought of obtaining the Black Fire resurfaced in his mind.
Just then, however, Qin Yun noticed something was off.
He asked in surprise, "Young Master Wan, you know him?"
Lord Wangu did not deny it. "That’s right, Jiang Chen and I are acquainted."
"But rest assured, we’ve only met before. There’s no relationship between us."
Only then did Qin Yun relax. He had been worried that Lord Wangu might know Jiang Chen and go easy on him, throwing the match. That would be a devastating blow.
Fortunately, there was nothing between Lord Wangu and Jiang Chen.
Lord Wangu cupped his hands toward Jiang Chen. "Jiang Chen. I never expected it to be you."
"However, I’m representing the Qin Family here. I won’t show any mercy."
Jiang Chen laughed.
"Don’t think I’ll be giving you any face just because you said that."
Faced with Jiang Chen’s haughtiness, Lord Wangu grew annoyed.
He was a genius, after all. It was bad enough that Jiang Chen had snatched the Black Fire away, but now he was acting even more arrogantly than him.
He said coldly, "Today, on behalf of the Qin Family, I will compete against you in Alchemy Skill."
"If you don’t know the first thing about alchemy, you should just admit defeat."
Hearing this, Jiang Chen almost burst out laughing.
He pointed to himself and asked, "The first trial is a competition of Alchemy Skill... against me?"
His tone of voice was incredibly strange.
It was as if he were suggesting that competing against him in alchemy was a huge mistake.
In truth, Jiang Chen was supremely confident. ’A competition of Alchemy Skill? Is it even possible for me to lose?’
’Now that I have the Black Fire, I’ll soon become a Third-Grade Alchemist.’
’Lord Wangu, on the other hand, is a Second-Grade Alchemist at best. As far as Second-Grade Alchemists go, I’m confident that I’m unrivaled in the entire Fire Sparrow Kingdom.’
’No Alchemist can compare to me.’
Sure enough, Lord Wangu gave a wicked grin and said, full of confidence, "That’s right. A competition of Alchemy Skill."
"Tell me, are you scared?"
He completely failed to detect the bizarre confidence in Jiang Chen’s tone.
He simply assumed Jiang Chen knew nothing about alchemy.
And if Jiang Chen knew nothing about alchemy, he would naturally lose.
Jiang Chen didn’t smile. Instead, his entire body relaxed.
"Alright. As it happens, I know a little something about Alchemy Skill. I’ll take you on,"
he said with great modesty.
Lord Wangu was overjoyed when he heard this.
’Even if Jiang Chen knows some alchemy,’ he thought, ’his skill must be mediocre at best.’
"Good! In that case, before we start, I want to make a bet with you."
Jiang Chen spread his hands in a relaxed gesture. "Name your terms. I’ll agree to anything you propose."
Seeing Jiang Chen’s completely unfazed expression, Lord Wangu sneered inwardly.
’I’ll make you suffer a crushing defeat.’
He decisively stated his terms. "It’s simple: if you lose, you give me the Black Fire."
He had been plotting to get the Black Fire all along, and he certainly wasn’t going to let this chance slip by.
Jiang Chen had fully expected Lord Wangu to make a play for the Black Fire.
He agreed loudly.
"Alright, it’s a bet! If I lose, the Black Fire is yours."
"And what about you? What are you putting up that’s of any value?"
For a moment, Lord Wangu was stunned. Then he sneered, "I’m not going to lose to you."
Jiang Chen immediately roared, "Stop with the fucking nonsense and put up your stake!"
Scolded by Jiang Chen, Lord Wangu’s face turned ashen.
Finally, he threw all caution to the wind. "I’ll bet my life! If I lose, my life is yours to do with as you please."
