Chapter 756: Chapter 389: Dreams Fulfilled (Third Update)
Lawrence Winters had already guessed it, and now it was merely confirmed.
She nodded at Nathan Sheldon and smiled, "Good evening, Mr. Nathan. It’s an honor to meet you."
She was just being polite; she didn’t really feel "honored."
Nathan Sheldon knew it too and said, "Likewise. Miss Winters, your dress looks nice today. Is it from Dior as well?"
Lawrence raised an eyebrow, "No, I’m just an ordinary employee. How could I afford Dior’s haute couture? I bought this ready-made outfit at Dior’s flagship store. It’s a vintage style they couldn’t sell and were about to reclaim, so I got it."
"It was only a few thousand dollars. I got a bargain."
Nathan thought of Ruby Sheldon’s haute couture dress, which cost six figures, nearly seven.
It’s almost one hundred times the price of Lawrence’s dress, no wonder Ruby wasn’t pleased earlier.
But how could the Dior brand make such a blunder? It definitely needed a thorough investigation.
Though he was displeased, he didn’t blame Lawrence Winters.
He still spoke gently, "Miss Winters, you look great in this dress. Much better than Betty."
With such a remark, Lawrence couldn’t just ignore it.
She responded openly, "Actually, Miss Sheldon also looked great in her dress. I didn’t intend to wear the same style, but I honestly didn’t know her haute couture would choose my vintage ready-to-wear design."
"Betty posted it on social media. She prepared long for this birthday gift," Nathan said tactfully.
Meaning Lawrence should have seen it, implying that her actions were not considerate.
Lawrence chuckled, "But I haven’t seen Miss Sheldon’s social media posts; I’m not friends with her on WeChat."
Nathan: "..."
He recalled Ruby Sheldon saying Lawrence always tried to cozy up to her, but the Sheldon couple said Lawrence was not to be trusted and advised against associating with her.
Perhaps that’s why Ruby Sheldon didn’t add her on WeChat?
Nathan scrutinized Lawrence Winters, noticing her clear and radiant smile, especially her eyes, darker than usual, captivating when she looked at someone.
She didn’t seem like someone "not to be trusted" at all.
But, appearances can be deceiving; those not to be trusted wouldn’t have "untrustworthy" written on their foreheads.
Nathan smiled slightly, "I see, then it’s nothing. Not knowing is no crime; it must be a coincidence."
"Of course, it’s a coincidence. Why would I intentionally create trouble for the birthday girl?" Lawrence laughed, complimenting, "But Miss Sheldon’s outfit was even lovelier, like a little flower fairy in the garden."
Lawrence was adept at steering the conversation, and before they knew it, she was chatting with Nathan Sheldon and Evan Stetford at the entrance of the Fortune Pavilion.
It wasn’t until Mrs. Foster sent someone to find her that she smiled and said to the two gentlemen, "I must excuse myself. You two enjoy the conversation."
She turned and followed the maid away.
Nathan Sheldon and Evan Stetford watched her retreating figure.
Nathan glanced at Evan, noticing he couldn’t take his eyes off her, and probed, "...Uncle, did you just say she’s your agent? I heard she’s not trustworthy, you..."
Evan was quite taken aback, interrupting Nathan sharply, "Who told you that about Lawrence?"
"If she were untrustworthy, would she risk having her arm chopped off to save a friend?"
"If she were untrustworthy, would she choose to get engaged to an ordinary man, ignoring those with better backgrounds?"
"Nathan, you’re not someone easily swayed by hearsay, what’s going on?"
Nathan thought, I just made a casual remark. Who knew I’d hit a nerve?
He rubbed his chin thoughtfully, "...So, Uncle, you don’t think she’s untrustworthy? Do you like her?"
"Of course, she’s not untrustworthy. Not only that, but she is pure-hearted, kind, and generous, hardworking and earnest. Who wouldn’t like such a girl?" Evan replied indifferently.
Almost like he was talking about a different person than Ruby described.
Nathan was definitely a bit troubled now.
Ruby Sheldon and Evan Stetford were both people he trusted.
Yet their assessments of the same person varied widely.
This was certainly interesting.
He squinted his eyes and said with a smile, "So that’s it, this Miss Winters, she’s really quite interesting."
Evan glanced at him sharply and whispered, "Nathan, don’t get interested in her. Since your parents don’t like her, if they find out you’re ’interested,’ Miss Winters could be in trouble..."
Nathan recalled Ruby’s words about being untrustworthy, which was indeed the view of the Sheldon couple, so could his parents have misjudged her?
This was even more intriguing.
He didn’t let it show, smiling as he said, "I understand. Thanks for the advice, Uncle."
...
Inside the Fortune Pavilion, Lawrence Winters was seated next to Mrs. Foster.
The banquet followed ancient customs, men on the left and women on the right.
The left side of the hall was the men’s seating, the right was the women’s.
Lawrence was seated at the head of the women’s section because she was with Mrs. Foster.
She inevitably sat at the same table as Ruby Sheldon and Autumn Stetford.
She felt a bit uneasy, but seeing Ruby also displeased made her feel at ease.
At least that meant Ruby wasn’t aware they’d be seated together either.
She smiled slightly and diverted her gaze to the men’s table.
Aiden Sheldon sat in the most prominent position, expressionless, only revealing an incredulous gentle smile and a touch of indulgence when his gaze fell on Ruby.
Ryan Sheldon sat beside Aiden, smiling as he spoke with Edward Foster, who was at the same table.
Edward noticed Lawrence looking over and quickly raised his glass, winking at her and grinning happily.
Gabriel Foster sat next to Edward. At this point, Evan Stetford and Nathan Sheldon entered from the door, but they didn’t sit at the same table.
Evan took a seat at the head, on the other side of Aiden, but Nathan found a less conspicuous spot in the hall as if he wasn’t part of the Sheldon family.
Lawrence glanced in Nathan’s direction, thinking the Sheldons were really keeping him tightly guarded.
In contrast, the Sheldon couple’s doting on Ruby was much more high-profile.
And seeing Ryan’s sunny demeanor, it seemed he had no awkward awareness of being the "second" child.
Lawrence withdrew her gaze, watched as her friend took a seat next to her, sipping a chilled coconut juice and giving her a "dead tired" expression.
Lawrence chuckled quietly, "...A noble family indeed, truly the top-tier. —You got your wish, my friend."
