Chapter 64: Director’s Office

Shen Yu’s face darkened.

"So it isn’t only the Third World..."

"The Polluted World is merging too."

"All three worlds are collapsing together."

Bang! Bang! Bang!

He barely had time to think.

The snake-scorpion doctors twisted their monstrous limbs and surged toward him.

Their venomous tails stabbed forward simultaneously.

"What the hell?!"

Shen Yu spun around and sprinted down the corridor.

Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap!

The midnight hallway continued to fracture.

More glowing cracks appeared with every second.

Snake-scorpion doctors poured endlessly from patient rooms, their countless legs scraping across the floor as they chased after him.

It looked less like monsters hunting prey...

...and more like an unstoppable landslide swallowing everything in its path.

Meanwhile, Shen Yu’s livestream exploded with comments.

"What the hell? They’re not even pretending anymore!"

"The three worlds are merging directly!"

"This is insane!"

"No wonder it’s an S-rank instance. Day Five is literally a death sentence."

"Who could possibly survive this?"

"Doesn’t it feel like something triggered the merge ahead of schedule?"

The barrage scrolled so quickly it became impossible to read.

Outside the instance, Ho Yong’s face had turned deathly pale.

"Notify everyone!"

"Prepare for an emergency manifestation!"

"If the hospital descends into reality, evacuate all nearby residents immediately!"

Around him, everyone wore grim expressions.

Luxian frowned deeply.

She still couldn’t see a path to clearing the instance.

"...Can Shen Yu really make it out alive?"

Inside the hospital, Shen Yu ran faster than he ever had before.

The end of the corridor—and the main hall beyond—was finally within sight.

Then—

BZZZT!

A crack opened in the wall ahead.

Professor Yang suddenly thrust half his body out of the rift.

Without hesitation, he swung an electrified stun baton straight at Shen Yu’s abdomen.

Electric arcs crackled through the air.

There was no room to dodge.

Then—

THUD!

From deep within the corridor, a torrent of blood surged forward like a crimson wave.

A hanging corpse came crashing headfirst across the floor, slamming directly into Professor Yang.

Boom!

The collision knocked Professor Yang sideways.

The electrified baton struck the corpse instead.

BZZZT!

Violent arcs danced across the body’s abdomen.

Its dried blood scabs burst apart with a series of wet, popping sounds.

Shen Yu rushed past the gap in the wall as the hanging corpse continued to slam itself against Professor Yang.

Electric arcs scorched the corpse’s abdomen, burning away its dried blood scabs with sharp popping sounds. Yet it refused to retreat.

"You scum... You worthless trash!"

Professor Yang was forced backward into the crack of light, hurling curses with every step. Each insult caused fresh blood blisters to erupt across the hanging corpse’s body. Its flesh rotted before Shen Yu’s eyes, but it continued to block the opening with unwavering determination.

Thud! Thud! Thud!

The corpse slammed into Professor Yang again and again.

Its bluish lips trembled as it turned toward Shen Yu.

"For me... for us... escape... Escape from this place..."

"I understand."

Without hesitation, Shen Yu dashed past the gap.

Instead of running toward the playground or the hospital’s front gate, he plunged straight into the dark stairwell.

"What the hell? Why isn’t he escaping?"

"Shouldn’t he be running for the hospital entrance?"

"The stairwell? At a time like this?"

The live chat exploded with confusion.

The moment Shen Yu entered the stairwell, he wrapped the Wings of Freedom around himself, pulled out the Director’s Office keycard, and sprinted upward.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

His footsteps echoed through the empty stairwell.

As he climbed, he pressed a hand against the wall. Faintly, he heard Yang Jin’s trembling voice.

"No... I don’t want to do this anymore..."

"I don’t want to..."

The whispers lingered in the darkness as he climbed flight after flight of stairs.

Finally, at the top of yet another staircase, a solitary door appeared where no door should have been.

A plaque above it read:

Director’s Office

"So this is where it is."

Without a word, Shen Yu swiped the magnetic keycard.

Beep.

The lock disengaged, and the heavy door slowly swung open.

Beyond it was a cramped, dimly lit room.

An interrogation desk stood in the center. Beside it sat a heavy restraint chair covered in metal shackles beneath a single weak lamp.

Rather than an office, it looked far more like an execution chamber for electrotherapy.

The scene matched the fragmented memories buried deep within Shen Yu’s mind.

His expression darkened.

He stepped inside and quietly searched the room before pulling open the desk drawer.

Inside lay a green access card.

Electrotherapy Helmet Control Card

The moment he read the label, his eyes lit up.

"So that’s it..."

Everything finally fit together.

Shen Yu hadn’t chosen the stairwell at random.

The last meaningful encounter he’d shared with Yang Jin had taken place here. That day, she had taken his package and disappeared into the stairwell.

At the time, he’d wondered where she had gone.

Now the answer was obvious.

The package had been delivered by hospital security to the Director’s Office. It had made a metallic clanging sound whenever it was shaken.

It could only have contained one thing:

The electrotherapy helmet.

Professor Yang had personally placed that helmet on Shen Yu’s head.

Which meant that when Yang Jin secretly took the package, she had come here.

That had been her final clue.

She hadn’t led him into the stairwell for a private moment.

She had been showing him the way.

Only someone carrying the Director’s keycard could climb these stairs and reveal the hidden office.

"Yang Jin..."

"You’ve worked hard."

"I’ll take you out of here."

Shen Yu picked up the control card and swiped it across the restraint headband locked around his own head.

Click.

A mechanical chime echoed through the room.

The metal headband sprang open.

For the first time since entering the nightmare, Shen Yu stood completely free of the device that had controlled him.

Buzz... Buzz... Buzz...

Before he could react, a twisted crack of light opened in the darkest corner of the room.

It expanded rapidly.

The entire office shook violently.

Stepping out of the widening fissure, Professor Yang emerged with a cold, expressionless face.

He brushed dried blood from his sleeve as he walked forward, his icy eyes fixed squarely on Shen Yu.
