Chapter 436: Prelude to...
Luna froze. Her breath came in quick bursts. The darkness beneath the blindfold felt heavier now — like a mirror reflecting her own doubt.
After a long silence, Orpheus withdrew his blade. "Pick it up."
She retrieved her sword, breathing hard.
"You could’ve ended that easily."
"I could’ve. But that’s not the point."
"Then what is the point?"
He looked at her, expression unreadable.
"That you need to trust. Not your eyes, not your fear — but your own instincts. And me."
Luna was quiet for a moment. "...Trust you, huh?"
"Yes."
She hesitated. The word "trust" lingered on her tongue like something fragile. But she nodded. "Then show me again."
The wind shifted, colder now. Orpheus closed his eyes, suppressing his aura until it vanished completely. He was gone — not in body, but in presence.
Luna stood still, her sword at the ready. The silence pressed in. There was no sound, no warmth, nothing to detect. It was as if the world itself held its breath.
Then—
A flicker. Not sight, not sound — feeling.
She moved before thinking. Steel met steel with a brilliant spark. Her blindfold fluttered slightly from the pressure of the clash.
Orpheus smiled faintly. "Better."
They moved again, faster than before. Their blades sang through the clearing, a rhythm of strikes and counters, the sound of footsteps barely audible over the wind. Luna wasn’t seeing — she was reading the flow of intent, the pull of energy between them. Each movement felt like instinct sculpted into art.
For a moment, it was as though their minds aligned — two auras moving in tandem, dancing on the edge of danger and trust.
When it ended, Luna stood panting, her sword raised. Orpheus stopped just short of her shoulder, his blade angled downward.
"You’ve improved," he said softly.
She exhaled shakily, lowering her weapon.
"That... was exhausting."
"That was awareness." He stepped forward and loosened the blindfold knot. The silk fell away, and Luna blinked against the morning light flooding her vision.
For the first time since the fight began, she realized the sun had fully risen — the crimson horizon painted gold, mist drifting between the cliffs. The entire world looked sharper now, colors vivid and alive.
Orpheus’s expression softened. "Do you see it now?"
She nodded slowly. "It’s... beautiful."
He gave a faint smile. "It always was. You just needed to stop looking for it."
Luna let out a small laugh, tired but full of quiet awe. "You make everything sound poetic, you know that?"
He shrugged. "Teaching requires patience. And patience requires perspective."
She smirked. "So does dealing with you."
After training, the two sat at the edge of the cliff, legs dangling over the abyss. The sun had risen high enough to cast long shadows behind them. Luna stretched her sore arms with a groan.
"You really don’t go easy on me."
"You’d hate it if I did."
"...True." She smiled faintly. "Still, I almost felt like I was fighting blind and reading your mind."
"You were reading my intent," he corrected.
"The body follows the will. If you sense the will, you can predict the strike."
"So that’s how you always dodge my attacks."
He chuckled quietly. "Among other things."
She gave him a sidelong glance. "Show-off."
For a while, they sat in silence, watching the wind carry clouds across the distant mountains. Somewhere below, faint red rivers of molten mana flowed like veins across the land, glowing softly.
Luna leaned back on her hands. "You think there’s an end to this? All this training, fighting, surviving?"
Orpheus looked at her. "No. There’s only evolution."
She smiled wistfully. "That’s a very Orpheus answer."
He tilted his head slightly. "And you expected?"
"I don’t know..." She looked up at the sky.
"Maybe something like — ’Someday, yes, when we’ve found peace.’"
He was quiet for a moment. Then, softly, he said, "Peace is an illusion for warriors like us. But balance — that we can find."
Luna turned toward him, a small smile playing on her lips. "Balance, huh? Between chaos and control?"
"Between strength and restraint," he replied.
’’Between fear and faith."
Her smile deepened. "You mean between student and teacher?"
He met her gaze. "No." His tone softened. "Between equals."
Luna blinked, surprised. Then she laughed lightly. "You really are impossible to read."
"That’s the point," he said, smirking.
As the day stretched on, they packed their things and prepared to return to the road — back toward civilization, back toward whatever awaited beyond the crimson ridges. But as Luna fastened her sword belt, she paused, glancing back at the training ground. The faint marks of their battle still scarred the earth.
She whispered quietly, almost to herself, "I’ll surpass you one day."
Orpheus, who had heard her, gave a low chuckle as he walked past. "When you do, Luna... I’ll let you lead."
She turned, grinning. "You’d better keep your word."
He looked over his shoulder, his eyes glinting with faint amusement. "I always do.’’
And as they descended from the mountain path, the sunlight caught their figures — teacher and student, shadows overlapping, walking side by side through the wild expanse of the demon world.
Not just master and disciple, not just lovers anymore — but two blades, tempered by trust, cutting their own path toward destiny.
The road leading toward the grand demon city wound through ancient blackwood forests and crimson plains, where glowing flowers bloomed beneath the ever-present crimson sky. By midday, Orpheus and Luna stopped beside a secluded spring hidden among weathered cliffs.
The water was so clear that it reflected the sky like polished crystal.
Neither spoke for a while.
Luna knelt beside the spring, cupping the cool water in her hands before splashing her face. She looked toward Orpheus, who stood quietly beneath the shade of a twisted tree, his crimson eyes fixed on the distant horizon.
"You’ve been unusually quiet," she observed.
"I’m thinking."
"Danger?"
"A possibility."
Luna smiled faintly. "That’s your way of saying yes."
Orpheus finally turned toward her. His eyes were calm as usual.
