Chapter 175: Something Special, Something Pure

[FROLO]

"Sir, Senator Aleksandr is here to see you," Volkov said carefully as he stared at his boss, who had been in the shittiest of moods since morning.

It had been hard getting Sergei to communicate about anything at all, and now, the senator was here.

"I don’t see him on my schedule," Sergei said flatly, not even lifting his head from the reports he was staring at.

He had been working hard these past few weeks, and while Volkov understood that well, he also hoped that his boss could take a breather, even if just for a moment. If he kept working himself tirelessly, he would get sick, or worse things could happen...

Because of him.

"He doesn’t have an appointment..." Volkov trailed off, knowing damn well that the chances of that iPad being lunged at him had suddenly grown higher.

"Shut the door on your way out," the alpha said, not mincing his words.

And Volkov...

He walked back to the waiting room, where the senator was waiting with his aide.

"Senator... Mr. Moskowsky is still busy. Do you have a message for him?" Volkov asked, knowing that the alpha couldn’t give a shit about what the senator wanted right now.

He knew that for a while.

Yet the senator seemed determined to have this meeting, something that intrigued Volkov because this man was literally walking himself to a potential doom, and he wasn’t even scared. What the hell?

"I’ll wait. Thank you, Mr. Volkov," Alek said, like it was really okay.

Volkov stared at the man pitifully before he went on with his work.

He had his own suspicions about how this would end, but the only thing he could do was pray for something good to come out of this. Which was a long stretch given the way Irina had been kicked out of the office earlier.

It has been a really long day here.

Ten minutes later, Rahim walked in carrying Sergei’s food.

"How’s the temperature in there?" Rahim whispered as she set the food in front of Volkov. She couldn’t send it to Sergei because if she did, the alpha would know where the good had come from.

"I’m updating my will," Volkov whispered, horrified.

"That bad?"

"You don’t know half of it, man..."

"Well, good luck with this lunch," Rahim said, as if that was not the easiest way to have Volkov nuked off the face of the earth by the one man who wanted to kill everything in his line of sight.

"I tell you I’m updating my will, and you want me to be buried alive? You know he won’t eat this shit. He hasn’t eaten anything in weeks," Volkov sighed slowly and defeatedly.

"I’ll plant a flower on your grave, my dear friend. I have to go now," Rahim whispered before she straightened up and walked out of the office like the senator didn’t just hear their conversation.

Yet even then, the senator stayed composed.

Calm.

Still Determined.

Whatever it was that had brought the senator here, Volkov hoped it was going to be worth it because someone would probably lose their head today. And if it wasn’t Volkov, then it would be the senator.

Volkov stared at the packed lunch that Rahim had bought Sergei. He knew this was a terrible idea, but surely it couldn’t be worse than sending the man cold food.

Mumbling a silent prayer, the secretary knocked on the alpha’s door again.

"It appears you’re deaf and dumb, Volkov, huh?" Sergei’s grim voice came through, the warning clear in his voice.

Volkov stiffened, staring at the door that was still closed.

Maybe he was really doomed to die today.

"It’s urgent, sir," Volkov gambled while Alek watched behind him.

"Is it about my son?"

Volkov knew it was a trick question.

He’d fallen for it more than once, and it had nearly cost him a literal arm and a leg. Oh, he should have really let Rahim deliver the lunch herself. Maybe it would save him the trouble of having to be caught in a lie again.

"Unmarked mail, sir," Volkov said, trying to sound confident.

The senator behind him watched as the secretary fiddled with the lunch pack like it was the one thing he shouldn’t have been terrified of as much.

Senator Aleksandr had heard the tales about the devil of Frolo. He had seen the man’s handiwork on the streets of Frolo. But being this up close, to see his people that terrorized was something that Alek hadn’t ever considered was real.

He was watching a man carrying lunch lie to his boss in the name of unmarked mail just to buy himself a few minutes.

Then again, Sergei was THAT dangerous

The senator was aware of it, too.

But damn, was the man a horror.

"Thirty-five seconds," Sergei said flatly.

Volkov didn’t wait.

He opened the door in a rush, setting the lunch pack on the table before rushing out just like he had gone in.

He didn’t need to hear Sergei’s timer because he had his own timer.

Serving Sergei had turned him into a military-trained secretary, and it wasn’t even funny, but fuck was it something else altogether.

"Whew, there are seconds left," Volkov breathed out in relief before he went back to his desk.

Inside Sergei’s office, the alpha stared at the delivery and crinkled his nose.

His first thought was that Anya had put his poor secretary to this, so he didn’t even bother with the lunch pack.

Instead, he let it stay there and continued with his work. He truly didn’t feel like eating, and the fact that the senator had dared to come to his office was making him even madder.

"Miss Anya, you can—" Volkov’s voice came from the other side, and before Sergei could even think of what to throw at his secretary, the door opened, revealing a stone-faced Anya who looked like she had had enough of this.

"I’m not eating this shit. You can throw it away yourself. It will end up in the trash anyway. Also, I’m busy, in case you may have missed my scheduler," Sergi said, not bothering to look at his oldest friend and aide.

Anya, on the other hand, didn’t even seem to be as worried.

Because she just walked in and took a seat on the couch in the office like she was here to stay, whether Sergei liked it or not.

"I’m busy, Anya," Sergi said flatly.

"Aren’t we all. And you’re wasting my time too," Anya said flatly, and Sergei lifted his head to look at the woman who was so defiant.

Anya was mad at Sergei for pushing everyone away, and right now Sergei wasn’t in the mood for another lecture from her.

"If you’re here about Irina, I’m not going along with that stupid plan of hers. I’m done. If it’s about the food, I already told you not to bother. If you come to rest, shut up and make no sound.

"I am busy," Sergei said, his insistence on the food and how busy he was something that got Anya’s attention.

Anya hadn’t sent Sergei food.

She was going to after the meeting, but clearly someone had beaten her to it. It was resting high because the restaurant name on the lunch pack wasn’t where Sergei usually ate. Hell, it wasn’t even a preference for him.

But maybe Volkov was back to gambling with restaurants again to see which one the alpha would settle on eating from.

"Good for you," Anya said before she looked at the door.

"Come in, senator."
