Chapter 114: One More Wouldn’t Change Anything
"What about?" He asked as he took a step toward her.
Maya blinked as she stared up at him. His green eyes sparkled, and she could see the emerald necklace peeking out of his shirt.
She wondered if she was supposed to be scared in this scenario but it was hard to be when he was still holding her so gently.
"We are going to your room," she mumbled as she kept her gaze locked on the necklace.
"And that’s enough to make you happy?"
His tone bothered her. He was clearly prying for something and she wished he would just tell her what it was. Perhaps she might be able to better explain if she knew.
She shut her eyes, feeling her heart beat loudly. "Yes," she mumbled.
How did he elicit such a reaction from her? Her entire body tingled with him standing close enough that she wouldn’t have to take a step forward to lean against him.
His scent infiltrated her nostrils and all she actually wanted to do was lean forward. She knew exactly how warm he was. She could feel it around her wrist.
It wasn’t fair, was it? Did he feel it, perhaps? Was all he felt towards her just his anger and hatred?
"You seem to have the idea that something good might happen there," he pressed.
"It doesn’t matter," she replied before she thought about it. It wasn’t a lie. She truly wanted to be as close as he would let her.
Her eyes snapped open as she realized what she said. He stared hard at her face for a moment while she tried not to react to the tingling that came with his stares.
"We will see how long you can keep saying that," he muttered and turned back around but he didn’t let go of her hand as he kept pulling her toward his room.
Maya’s eyes widened at his words. Was it a challenge? Was he going to test her and make her change her mind?
She gritted her teeth. She would have to bear it but she was scared that it might be something she would be unable to handle.
She knew it was weak and pathetic of her to say that when he had barely done anything in comparison. After all she had done to him, he still felt guilt when she was hurt and brought a physician to check her injuries.
She forced herself to pay attention when he stopped in front of the doors of his bedroom. He pushed the pair open with one hand and pulled her inside.
It was more of a gentle tug than pulling. He didn’t need to exert any force to get her to go with him. She knew she would follow him anywhere.
A smile lingered on her face as she recalled a memory. Alaina wasn’t wrong—she really did follow him everywhere when they were children.
He let go of her hand as he shut the door, and Maya grabbed her wrist to keep from stretching toward him. He glanced at her for a brief moment before walking past her to the side door.
Maya had to bite down on her tongue to keep from asking him where he was going and why. She had seen his expression when she asked earlier. Furthermore, he had a job. She couldn’t infringe on it.
She wondered if she could offer her help. Regardless of her current status, she was once the High Alpha’s daughter. Father made sure she was taught well. But she knew better than to offer.
The sound of the door closing was louder than she would like. She didn’t move an inch for a long time. She hoped he would return to at least sleep. Dinner had only just ended; there was still some time before he needed to come to bed.
Knock, knock.
Maya jumped out of her skin as she stood in the middle of the room like a lost lamb. She wasn’t expecting anyone, and Keenan had just gone through the side entrance. Besides, it was his room—he wouldn’t need to knock to come in.
The handle slowly turned as Palmer poked her head into the room. She looked a little surprised to see Maya standing in the middle of the room.
"Palmer," she called with genuine surprise. "What are you doing here?"
The maid walked into the room and shut the door behind her without looking back. She was still wearing the usual maid outfit with her white apron but the mobcap was missing.
Her long light brown hair was braided into one long braid behind her. She stepped closer to Maya with a hand still behind her back.
"Winnie said to help you get ready for the night," she replied and revealed she was holding a nightdress.
Her eyes bulged. "She did?" She asked in horror.
"Yes. She said it must be uncomfortable to sleep in that dress and offered this instead."
"No, this is fin—" she started to say but stopped herself. "Okay."
Her face was red as she changed her mind. Maya didn’t want to put into words what she was thinking. There was no way she would say she was trying to seduce Keenan.
She internally screamed as the maid held up the dress. It wasn’t much of a dress and it was completely see-through.
They weren’t exactly married by normal standards and she knew he wouldn’t appreciate this but he wasn’t against it. They had already been intimate—one more wouldn’t change anything.
"Would you prefer something else?" Palmer asked, noticing the color on her face.
"N-no," she replied. There were tears in her eyes as she spoke and she wished the maid wouldn’t ask so many questions.
"Very well then, Lady Maya. Shall we head to the bath?"
She swallowed and slowly nodded her head. "Be mindful of the bandage," she mumbled.
It was more something to distract her from the nightdress than actually giving Palmer instructions. The maid was quite resourceful and didn’t need to be given much instruction for her to know what to do.
"I will," she replied as she led a nervous Maya to the bath.
