Chapter 109: Something To Hide
"Where are you going?" He asked with a suspicious look in his eyes.
"Alpha Keenan," she called with a mix of horror and surprise. Her hand fell from the door’s handle as she turned her head to look at him.
He frowned and leaned against the doorway connecting to his bedroom. He folded his arms as he watched her, revealing taut muscle underneath his sleeves.
He was dressed differently than when he left the room in the morning, and she wondered if he had returned while she was sleeping.
He was dressed in a cream linen shirt tucked into a black pair of pants with a brown leather belt. He wore boots that matched the color of his belt. His blonde hair was brushed away from his face but a few strands had escaped and fallen across his forehead.
"Did you not hear my question?" His eyes narrowed.
Maya turned around fully and immediately looked to her feet as color filled her face. She had forgotten he had asked a question and was staring at him without any dignity. But she couldn’t be blamed; she hadn’t expected him to appear and speak to her so directly.
"I wanted to check my room," she replied and grabbed her injured arm, shutting her eyes as she looked down.
"Why?" He asked. There was suspicion in his tone.
Maya looked up, shocked. What could he possibly think she was going to do there? He didn’t have to sound like she was trying to escape or worse.
"I haven’t been there since we arrived," she explained.
"Is there anything you want here that you don’t have?"
Maya blinked twice, wondering if she had misheard him. Was he asking her what she wanted? Was he being sarcastic? Was he saying she could stay here? Or was there something else she was missing? He was so hard to figure out.
"I just wanted to check for a few things," she mumbled.
She didn’t have anything to do here. If she stayed in this room alone for another moment, she didn’t trust that she would be able to stay still. At least in her room, she could pace and do whatever she wanted without fear of consequence. Here, she had to be extra careful.
"Richard said you shouldn’t move." he glanced at her arm, and the tension in his jaw loosened as his eyes grew clouded.
Is that guilt?
Did he feel bad that she was injured? Wouldn’t that be against his revenge?
"I will walk very slowly," she mumbled, refusing to give up.
He ground his jaw as his eyes shifted to her face. Maya looked away immediately—staring right into his eyes was not something she could do easily.
"Very well," he replied and stepped into the room. He shut the side door and began to walk toward her.
Her eyes widened, and she instinctively took a step back, bumping into the door handle, but Keenan didn’t stop walking until he was a mere two feet away.
"I can—" she started to speak but stopped when he leaned forward.
She shut her eyes tightly until it hurt, and her body stiffened as she braced herself. She didn’t know what he wanted to do, and it didn’t help that he always looked angry whenever he looked at her.
She could pick up his scent as he stood closer, but for some reason it felt like he was getting even closer. Her eyes flew open to see him staring directly at her face.
"Move," he ordered. Regardless of the word he used, there was no harshness in his tone.
Maya jumped out of the way, but not before his stretched-out hand brushed her arm as he reached for the door handle. His touch was warm; she could still feel how warm he was even through his clothes.
He pulled open the door and turned to look at her with an odd expression. "I barely touched you, and you’re jumpy."
Was he mocking her? Was this a callback to when she said he could take his anger? Was he considering it?
"I-I," she didn’t have anything to say to defend herself.
She wasn’t jumpy because she was scared but because she was nervous. She didn’t know what to do in his presence, and it didn’t help that it was no longer only guilt she felt.
Now, when he got too close, all she could think about was them in bed. Of course, she would be jumpy.
He turned his gaze toward the open door and pointed for her to step out. Her eyes widened slightly. He came here just to open the door for her.
"Thank you," she mumbled and stepped out, but Keenan didn’t just shut the door—he stepped out with her.
"Are you going with me?" She asked with horror.
"Do you have a problem with that?"
His tone always bothered her. He never hid his suspicions; rather, he threw them directly at her face.
"No, I am sure you’re busy, Alpha Keenan. You don’t have to come with me."
"Why? Do you have something to hide?"
Yes! Yes, I do!
She couldn’t think of why he would decide to follow her now. Wasn’t he avoiding her? What was this?
"No," she said with a sigh. "You may come along."
He scoffed. He didn’t seem to like the way she said it. However, she didn’t have time to worry about her language—her room was not the sort of place to be accompanied to.
She always wondered if he knew the state of her room. There was nothing to be embarrassed by, as this was what she was given, but it didn’t make it any easier.
She slowly went up the stairs, hoping that at some point, he would get tired and leave her alone. That this was simply a test. But it wasn’t, and he was still behind her when they appeared in front of her room.
"We are here," she said, even though there was no need to. This was his house, but she was still trying to give him a chance to leave her alone.
