Chapter 102: Nasty Fall
Maya felt dizzy and nauseous. It felt as though her body was on fire, pain radiating all over her. But in spite of the pain, there was a warm, soft feeling against her face and a familiar scent she couldn’t quite recall in this state.
It felt as if she was moving at an alarming rate and she wanted to stop, but she was certain the warm feeling would go with it and she didn’t want that.
But it did.
She wasn’t moving anymore, and she was placed on something soft, but it didn’t feel as soft as... what was it?
"It’s not serious, Alpha," an unfamiliar voice was saying. "The wood didn’t pierce her vein, and there aren’t any broken bones. She should heal soon. If she had her wolf, she wouldn’t need medical attention."
Who?
"And her head?" He queried.
"It was a heavy fall, but that should heal even faster. I only cleaned the wound, there isn’t a need for bandages."
"But she hasn’t woken—" he stopped speaking, and his expression darkened as he met her open eyes.
"I believe she is awake," the physician said and peered right into her face.
The physician was an older man in his sixties. Something about the man with thinning grey hair and a chin full of grey beard brought a memory she had long forgotten.
He stretched out his hand, opened her eyes, and brought the lamp closer to get a better view. He placed the lamp back down and held up two fingers.
"How many?" He asked.
Maya frowned as she tried to process what was going on. The last thing she remembered was being in the carriage, but by the pain in her body, something must have happened.
"Can you hear me?" He asked with a toothless smile. He was missing one of his incisors.
Maya tried to concentrate, but it felt like there was a memory she had been missing for a long time. This was not the first time she had seen this toothless smile.
"Is she okay?"
His gruff voice broke through her thoughts; his tone was laced with impatience. Did she do something?
He was dressed differently, and his hair was wet. Her hair felt wet too. Maya frowned as she recalled warning him about the rain and the carriage moving fast in the rainfall.
"Two," she whispered, forcing herself to concentrate on what was important. She didn’t want to anger him.
He smiled again and brought his hand down. "Yes, Alpha, she is. It was just a nasty fall. I am glad you have no broken bones, my lady. Healing bones without a wolf is nasty business. For children, no harm, but fully grown," he paused as he shook his head, "nasty business."
"I fell?" She asked softly.
She couldn’t look at Keenan, the older man was easier to look at. He felt less intense and he was sympathetic to her plight.
"You could say that," he whispered and stood to his feet, clutching his work bag. "Try not to move too much, Missy. You might get a nasty headache. If the pain is too much, let me know. The herbs taste nasty, but they will alleviate the pain."
"Thank you, Richard," Keenan replied coldly.
"Anytime, Marcus," he said and shuffled toward the door.
Keenan didn’t look pleased that the physician addressed him by his first name but he didn’t correct the older man. "Theo will take you home."
"I am not that old, Alpha," he said before shutting the door.
Maya didn’t know why, but she had a feeling the physician had taken care of her at some point in her childhood.
"How do you feel?" He asked coldly as he walked toward the bed.
"I am okay," she replied.
His eyes narrowed as he watched her. "Do you hurt anywhere else?"
If her head didn’t hurt so much, she would have shaken it instead of speaking. Speaking to him felt awkward. He was simply asking how she was, but it felt like she was on trial.
"No, I am fine. I-I think I can go to my room."
His eyes darkened more. "The physician said not to move. Stay put."
Maya forgot the pain at his sharp tone and nodded her head, which she regretted immediately. She winced, unable to hide her pain.
Keenan’s eyes widened, and he turned away from her. "Stay put."
He walked out of the room, leaving her alone on the bed. Maya knew exactly where she was. She was surrounded by his scent, and she had spent a significant amount of time staring at each corner to forget.
He had brought her to his room again. She had wanted to ask what happened, but she had been too scared, and Keenan had seemed especially angry.
The physician had said she fell. Did she fall off the carriage? It had been shaking so hard during the rain.
She frowned as she tried really hard to remember but couldn’t. It didn’t sound as though it was raining anymore, but she was quite aware that it had rained at some point.
If she had fallen out of the carriage during the rain, she could see how much of an inconvenience that was for him.
She could remember being carried. Did he carry her all the way here? Maya sighed. Not only was lacking a wolf a nuisance, but she also caused extra problems.
She tried to lift her injured hand, but it felt too heavy. She wondered what had happened when she fell. Her head felt sore and wet. She must have gotten drenched, but her clothes weren’t wet.
Clothes!
Her eyes widened as she looked down. She wasn’t wearing her clothes. She was wearing a tunic with a ripped sleeve showing her bandaged arm, and it didn’t feel like she was wearing anything else.
There was no question whether she got drenched—she did and someone had changed her.
Keenan? The cloth smells just like him.
Maya groaned. How were things supposed to be better when she was causing such a nuisance for him? What was she to do now? Apologize?
