Chapter 205: Chapter 205
Irina’s POV
I couldn’t think. My mind just snapped.
I threw myself forward, plunging straight down the steep, jagged dark slope.
"Irina! No!" Andrei roared directly behind me.
I felt his thick fingers brush against the heavy fabric of my winter jacket. He desperately tried to grab me, wanting to pull me back to the safety of the high ridge. But he missed. I was moving too fast, fueled by a terrifying cocktail of adrenaline and pure panic.
"Luna! Stop! It’s dangerous down there!" Roman yelled loudly into the freezing wind.
I ignored them. I ran down the dark mountain like a madwoman. My heavy boots slammed into the frozen dirt. I slipped on the icy mud and stumbled over sharp, jagged rocks, but I didn’t care. The frozen branches whipped my pale face, scratching my cheeks. The freezing wind burned my soft skin. Nothing mattered anymore.
I just needed to get down there. I had to find him.
The wind whipped my tangled dark hair across my tear-stained face. My chest heaved with every desperate breath, my lungs burning in the bitter cold. My heart pounded so hard it physically bruised my ribs.
And right then, in that chaotic, terrifying moment, it finally hit me. It hit me so hard my breathing actually stopped.
All my previous stubbornness. All my thick emotional walls. All my stupid, pointless denial. It all vanished into thin air.
I loved him.
I truly loved Nicholas.
I hopelessly and deeply loved my terrifying Alpha King.
The sudden realization crashed over me like a massive tidal wave. For so long, I had fought him. I fought our possessive mate bond. I fought his intense, overwhelming dark presence. I pushed him away every single time he desperately tried to pull me close. I called him a monster. I called him cruel.
But now, staring down into a massive valley of pure death, the truth was painfully clear.
He wasn’t just my fated mate. He wasn’t just the fierce protector of my innocent unborn pup. He was my entire world.
The terrible thought of living in a cold world without his deep, rumbling masculine voice shattered me. The thought of never feeling his massive, warm hands on my soft skin ripped me to shreds. I remembered the exact way his thick fingers gently touched my pale cheek right before he left. I remembered the intense, fiery heat of his massive body wrapping around me in bed. Now, all I felt was the bitter, terrifying cold.
I couldn’t live without his dark, heavy gaze following me across a room. I couldn’t breathe without his comforting pine and musk scent. I loved his dark possessiveness. I loved his fierce protection. I just loved him. I loved every arrogant, dominant part of him.
"Nicholas!" I screamed into the dead, frozen valley. "Nicholas!"
Hot tears poured down my frozen face. My fragile inner wolf cried out loudly for her missing mate. She clawed frantically at my chest, begging to feel his strong presence. The mate bond inside me was a silent, terrifying void.
I finally reached the dark bottom of the ruined slope.
The heavy stench of toxic copper was suffocating. Blood was everywhere. It coated the jagged rocks. It ruined the freezing white snow. It pooled in massive, dark puddles beneath my boots.
I fell hard to my knees in the freezing dark mud. I frantically crawled toward the very first massive pile of dead bodies.
"Please, Moon Goddess. Please don’t let it be him," I begged out loud, my voice broken.
My pale hands shook violently. I grabbed a heavy, bloody shoulder. I rolled the massive warrior over in the frozen dirt. He was so heavy. It wasn’t him. It was an unknown man with blank, dead eyes staring up at the freezing dark sky.
I gasped loudly. I scrambled over to the next heavy dead body.
"Nicholas!" I sobbed.
I dug frantically through the horrific pile. I pulled desperately at shredded dark clothes. I touched freezing, torn skin. My pale hands were covered in thick, sticky dark blood.
I didn’t care at all. I wiped my bloody, freezing bare hands on my thin jeans and kept digging.
Every single time I reached for a tall, dark-haired man, my terrified heart stopped beating.
Pure, blinding terror choked my tight throat. I was terrified. I was so scared to finally see his beautiful, heavily scarred face looking back at me with empty, dead eyes. If I saw his lifeless face in this freezing mud, I would die. I would literally just lay down and die right exactly here next to his massive body.
"Luna!" Andrei’s heavy boots crunched aggressively directly behind me. "Luna, stop! Please let us do this! You shouldn’t see this!"
"No!" I shrieked. "Don’t touch me! Just help me find him! Find your Alpha!"
I pushed Andrei’s massive hands away. I frantically moved on to another heavy pile of dead warriors. I tossed ruined dark weapons aside. I turned over incredibly heavy, bloody bodies.
My delicate nails cracked. My freezing small fingers bled. The bitter cold bit directly into my shaking, weak bones.
Roman dropped to his massive knees beside me. He started aggressively pulling dead bodies away too, his own face pale and twisted with grief.
"We will find him, Luna. Please stay calm," Roman ordered softly, though his gruff voice cracked.
"I cannot!" I cried out. "Nicholas, please! You promised me! You promised you would come back!"
I dug like a feral, wild animal. My fragile inner wolf whimpered in pure agony. We just wanted our mate. We needed to know where he was.
I turned over another dark man. It wasn’t him. I checked another massive warrior. It wasn’t him.
I kept going. I searched directly through dozens of heavy dead bodies. I looked at hundreds of them. The sheer scale of the slaughter was mind-numbing. My knees were bruised and bleeding from crawling over sharp stones. My jeans were soaked through with icy mud and other men’s blood.
My muscles burned. My fragile lungs felt like they were on fire. My broken, weak body was giving out.
Finally, I collapsed backward into the freezing dark mud.
I was completely exhausted. I didn’t have a single ounce of strength left inside my shaking limbs. My bloody, raw hands fell limp at my sides.
I hadn’t found him.
Nicholas wasn’t in this horrific pile of pure death.
I sat frozen in the bloody dirt. My broken, terrified mind was a chaotic mess.
Should I be happy? Was this a good thing? If he wasn’t dead in this specific spot, maybe he was actually alive. Maybe he fought his brutal way out. Maybe he escaped deep into the dark woods. Maybe he was just heavily bleeding out somewhere else, waiting for us to find him.
But the pure terror clawed at my raw throat.
What if he was taken? What if his lethal enemies dragged him away to horribly torture him? What if he was locked in some dark, freezing cell right now? Or worse... what if his massive body was destroyed by an explosive? What if there was nothing left of him to even find?
I didn’t know whether to feel relieved or miserable.
The heavy uncertainty was pure torture. It was eating my fragile soul alive. I clutched my bloody, shaking hands over my flat stomach. I shivered uncontrollably. My baby. Our tiny pup. I had to protect our pup, but I was failing so miserably.
The toxic adrenaline finally crashed inside my ruined body.
The horrific reality of the massive slaughterhouse hit me all at once. The absolute silence of the dead men deafened my ringing ears.
I fell forward onto my shaking knees.
The freezing, wet mud soaked through my thin jeans again. The icy wind whipped against my pale, bloody, wet face.
The heavy grief was unbearable.
I threw my heavy head backward. I wailed into the dark sky.
I cried incredibly hard. Deep, guttural sobs ripped out of my raw, bleeding throat. I couldn’t stop. I couldn’t breathe. The searing pain in my heavy chest was pure agony. It felt like someone had reached into my ribcage and physically crushed my heart with their bare hands.
I lowered my heavy head. I gasped for air, trying to catch my breath between the violent sobs.
Then, the horrific, toxic metallic stench of dark blood rushed into my nose again. The terrifying sight of the torn, heavily bleeding massive bodies aggressively spun inside my blurred vision. The gruesome reality of the carnage was too much for my pregnant body to handle.
My fragile stomach violently churned.
I hunched over the freezing mud, grabbed my heavy chest, and started vomiting.
