Chapter 203: Chapter 203
Irina’s POV
Dead, suffocating silence instantly filled the heavy SUV.
No one moved. No one even breathed. The only sound was the violent, frantic idling of the massive engine underneath us.
Roman sat completely frozen in the driver’s seat. His wide, terrified eyes stared at me through the rearview mirror. The blood had entirely drained from his heavily scarred face.
Andrei’s large, warm hands violently dropped from my shaking shoulders. He fell back against the leather seat. He looked absolutely horrified.
"No," Andrei choked out. His gruff voice was a fragile, broken whisper. "Luna... no. That is absolutely impossible."
"Irina, are you sure?" Roman demanded. His deep voice violently shook. "Are you absolutely sure?"
I couldn’t answer him. I physically couldn’t speak.
The agonizing pain violently crashed back over me. It was a thousand times worse than before. My fragile body aggressively seized up. It felt like someone had shoved a hot, jagged knife directly into my chest and violently twisted it.
I aggressively doubled over. I tightly gripped my stomach. A raw, blood-curdling scream ripped out of my burning throat.
Deep inside my mind, my inner wolf violently threw her head back. She unleashed a massive, deafening howl of pure, absolute grief. She viciously clawed at the walls of my mind. She aggressively tore at her own fur. She was completely inconsolable. She was absolutely dying from the inside out.
The ancient, unbreakable lore of our kind echoed violently in my head.
A mate bond does not just fade. It does not just disconnect. When a mate bond completely shatters without any reason, it only ever means one absolutely terrifying thing.
The mate is dead.
"No!" I violently screamed.
Hot, desperate tears aggressively flooded my pale cheeks. I fiercely shook my head. I absolutely refused to believe it. I completely rejected the very idea of it.
"He is not dead!" I sobbed hysterically. I violently slammed my small fists against the leather seat. "Nicholas is not dead! I refuse to accept it!"
Andrei aggressively reached for me again. Tears were violently pouring down his own face.
"Luna, please," Andrei cried. "The bond..."
"I don’t care about the bond!" I aggressively roared. My inner wolf violently pushed her dominant, Luna aura directly into my breaking voice. "He promised me! He absolutely promised he would come back! He is the Alpha King! He does not just die!"
Roman violently punched the heavy steering wheel. The massive horn blared aggressively into the dark night.
"She is right!" Roman shouted violently. "The King cannot fall! It has to be dark magic! It has to be a trick! I refuse to believe he is gone!"
I aggressively wiped the heavy tears from my face. My chest was violently bleeding from the inside, but I forced myself to sit up. I absolutely had to find him.
"Drive, Roman!" I violently commanded. "Get us to the border! Right now!"
Roman didn’t hesitate. He aggressively slammed his heavy boot directly down on the gas pedal.
The massive SUV violently lurched forward. We aggressively tore back onto the dark highway. The heavy tires violently ripped across the asphalt. Roman pushed the heavy vehicle absolutely past its limits. We aggressively sped through the freezing, pitch-black night.
I violently clutched my chest. I desperately focused on the empty, bleeding void inside my soul. I aggressively pushed past the terrifying pain. I completely refused to mourn. I absolutely refused to give up.
"Hold on, Nicholas," I whispered frantically. "I am coming. I am right here."
The heavy trees violently blurred past the thick windows. The dark road aggressively twisted and turned. Every single agonizing minute felt like an absolute eternity. My heart violently pounded against my ribs.
Finally, the massive SUV aggressively crested the final hill.
We had violently reached the exact coordinates. We were absolutely right at the edge of the border. This was exactly where Nicholas and his massive, lethal army were supposed to be.
Roman aggressively slammed on the heavy brakes.
The massive vehicle violently skidded across the loose gravel. We aggressively jerked to a complete, violent stop. The heavy headlights violently cut directly through the thick, freezing fog.
I aggressively leaned forward. My shaking hands violently pressed against the cold glass.
I stared out into the dark clearing. I waited to see the massive tents. I waited to see the heavily armed warriors. I absolutely waited to see my beautiful, terrifying mate rushing toward the car.
But there was nothing.
The massive border clearing was completely, entirely empty.
"What the hell?" Roman whispered violently.
He aggressively threw his heavy door open and jumped out. Andrei violently drew his heavy pistol and followed him. I aggressively pushed my own door open and stumbled out into the freezing night air.
The icy wind aggressively whipped through my hair. It bit violently at my pale skin.
I frantically looked around. There were absolutely no tents. There were absolutely no heavy military vehicles. There was absolutely no massive army.
"Where are they?" Andrei demanded aggressively. He violently aimed his heavy gun into the dark trees. "Roman, are these the right coordinates?"
"This is exactly it!" Roman shouted. He aggressively paced around the empty dirt. "The tracker showed them right here! A massive army of hundreds of heavily armed wolves does not just absolutely vanish!"
It made absolutely no sense.
There was no blood on the ground. There were absolutely no bodies. There were no signs of a massive, violent battle. It was just complete, eerie silence. The heavy fog violently rolled over the empty gravel.
"Nicholas!" I screamed violently into the dark woods.
My fragile voice aggressively echoed through the empty trees. Nobody answered.
Panic violently twisted my stomach. Where was my mate? Where was his army? What the hell had absolutely happened here?
Suddenly, a violent, aggressive spasm of pain ripped directly through my chest.
I violently gasped. I heavily stumbled forward. My knees violently buckled, but I aggressively caught myself on the side of the car.
It wasn’t the mate bond. The bond was still completely shattered. But this was a sharp, aggressive phantom pain. It was a violent, heavy pull directly inside my bleeding heart. It aggressively tugged at me. It felt exactly like a heavy, invisible string violently pulling me toward the dark edge of the woods.
"Luna!" Andrei yelled violently. He aggressively rushed toward me. "Get back in the car! It is not safe!"
"No," I gasped aggressively. I violently pushed his heavy hands away. "I feel something."
"Irina, please!" Roman begged violently.
I completely ignored them. I violently pushed myself away from the massive SUV. I aggressively stumbled directly toward the heavy, dark tree line.
The sharp, phantom pain violently pulsed in my chest. It aggressively grew stronger with every single shaking step I took. The icy wind violently howled around me. The heavy gravel violently crunched under my boots.
I aggressively walked into the thick, freezing fog. The dark shadows of the massive pine trees violently loomed over me.
"Right there," I whispered violently.
The sharp pain aggressively spiked. It directly pointed to a small, dark patch of heavy dirt right near the base of a massive tree.
"Over there," I said. My heavy voice violently cracked. I aggressively pointed a shaking finger at the ground. "I see it."
Andrei and Roman violently ran up behind me. They kept their heavy guns completely raised.
I violently dropped to my knees. The cold, wet dirt aggressively soaked directly through my jeans. My shaking, numb fingers violently reached out into the dark mud.
My breath violently caught in my throat. My absolute heart completely stopped.
I saw my own hair accessory dropped there. Nicholas should have been keeping it close to his body.
