Facing Jillian Carter’s question, Jane Sampson sneered openly, her tone even more dismissive and unconcerned than Jillian Carter’s initial phone call.
"What do I have to be proud of? The joy in my life doesn’t come from whether you, Jillian Carter, are doing well or not, but from whether I and my family and friends are doing well. And you, you’re not within the scope of my family or friends, so whatever happens to you has nothing to do with me, and I don’t need to feel either arrogant or disappointed because of anything about you."
Jane Sampson almost directly asked Jillian Carter, "Which onion are you to make me, Jane Sampson, feel happy or unhappy because of your trivial matters?"
