Chapter 147: Chapter 147: But the One She Likes Is You

’Did Summer Lancaster’s condition get worse? He told us because he didn’t want Lianne Vance to worry... Is that what this is about?’

"Kenneth, what’s wrong? Where are you? I’ll head over right now!" Dominic Thorne asked urgently. He was still shaken by what happened last time, when Kenneth had drunk himself into a three-day stupor over Thea Shaw, ending up with a perforated stomach. Thankfully, a bar employee had called his number, and he was rushed to the hospital just in time.

"Yates Group!"

Dominic Thorne hung up, spun the car around, and arrived at the Yates Group headquarters in ten minutes.

"Kenneth, what the hell happened?!" Dominic Thorne burst through the office door, panting. He leaned against the wall, beads of sweat on his forehead. "Is it Summer Lancaster’s condition...?"

"No!" Kenneth Yates cut Dominic Thorne off decisively. "I just found out something that happened a long time ago. It’s just... weighing on me." Kenneth Yates walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and lit a cigarette.

Dominic Thorne let out a sigh of relief. As long as it wasn’t about Summer Lancaster, it wasn’t a huge problem. "What is it, then? What could possibly get my cold, aloof boss this worked up?" Seeing it wasn’t about Summer, Dominic started to joke, dropping his serious expression.

Kenneth Yates threw the cigarette to the floor and stomped on it viciously. He exhaled a thick cloud of white smoke, and for a moment, Dominic couldn’t see his face clearly. The smoke quickly dissipated.

"Ethan... he’s in love with Summer!" The anguished, sorrowful look in Kenneth Yates’s eyes was something Dominic Thorne had never seen before. Not even when Thea Shaw left him had he looked so utterly devastated.

’My own beloved brother is in love with the woman I love most. This tangled mess of a relationship... it felt like more than he could bear.’

Dominic Thorne’s smile vanished. He sat down on the sofa.

"But Summer Lancaster loves *you*!" Dominic Thorne said, looking at his friend’s dejected back.

"But I hurt her in the past! Besides, she’s only in this state because of me!" Kenneth Yates spun around and retorted sharply.

"Kenneth, not every love story in this world has a fairytale ending. Let’s not even talk about what happened between you and Summer Lancaster before. The point is, you both love each other now. And even back then, Summer didn’t like Ethan, did she?" Dominic Thorne paused. "If you had to choose again, if you had known back then that Ethan was in love with Summer, would you still have married her?"

"Yes!"

"Exactly! You need to trust yourself. The most important thing right now is to get Summer Lancaster treated!"

Kenneth Yates fell into deep thought. He did love Summer Lancaster. His coldness toward her back then had merely been an act of rebellion against his parents’ arbitrary decision. He hated the feeling of being tied down, especially by force.

"Dominic, we’re going to see Summer tomorrow!" The commanding presence radiating from Kenneth Yates stunned Dominic Thorne. *This* was the invincible Kenneth Yates he remembered.

"Sounds good! Let’s go for a drink tonight, then! It’s been too long since we last drank together." Dominic Thorne grinned, wheedling playfully at Kenneth.

"Vexx. Nine o’clock."

The cold wind made people shiver, and pedestrians quickened their pace, heading home to where beautiful, gentle wives or smart, sensible children might be waiting for them. Everyone longed to enjoy a moment of tranquility, but at this moment, tranquility was the last thing Kenneth Yates wanted.

’He was starting to feel a sliver of regret. If Ethan Yates had confessed his feelings back then, would Summer Lancaster still have loved him so steadfastly? He didn’t dare to think any further. He wasn’t sure. Even if it was just a hypothetical, he felt helpless against the thought.’
